Tonight seems like just another game for the hapless Knicks, but it is not. Tonight the Phoenix Suns come to town. Coach D’Antoni’s former team has changed but is still winning without him. The Suns are leading the west with a 14-3 record, but more importantly may have a key piece to the Knicks future.
Unlike Wade and Lebron there is one free agent that actually would prefer to play for Coach D’Antoni over anyone else. That is Amare Stoudemire. He is coming back from eye surgery and playing great in his new goggles. Many people seem to think Wade and Lebron have no reason to leave their respective cities since they already have a foundation there, and their home team can pay them more than anyone else.
This leaves two elite free-agents that can save Mike D’Antoni’s job and maybe draw others to follow, Chris Bosh and Amare Stoudemire. Stoudemire had his best years under D’Antoni’s run and gun system finishing with thunderous dunks and developing a mid-range jump shot. Bosh is a top player as well but doesn’t have the link to D’Antoni nor the personality to shine in the big apple. Bosh’s game is simple and he is a very good player but many people question his toughness. New Yorker’s may be considered the toughest of all American’s and the Knicks have been lacking the toughness that once brought them to the top in the form of players like: Oakley, Jackson, Mason, Starks, etc.
Tonight Amare will throw down a thunderous dunk or two, something the hometown Knicks cannot say anyone on their team has done in a year or two. When tonight’s game is over Coach D’Antoni will see that his talent is just not going to get it done and even it Curry can come back a legit power forward is needed to compete in the tough Eastern Conference. With Amare on board for 2010 that may change the mind of many free agent guards to come over and play with the Knicks. With Amare and Gallo on the flour any point guard would be crazy to not want to some to New York in this system since it would probably produce career highs in points, assists, and minutes.
With Duncan aging and Dirk becoming less of a long term option, that leaves Amare, Bosh, and Josh Smith as the future of the Power Forward position. Coach D’Antoni needs Amare and Amare needs him to become an all-star elite player again. Gasol will overshadow him out west, and Dirk will steal all-star votes as well. So, tonight is the day to recruit Amare for the future. I am not saying Bosh isn’t a good player, but Amare is the shot to the arm that a tepid Madison Square Garden needs. Enjoy the game and hopefully the preview of our future. Go Knicks!
