Charles Barkley - Smarter than some give him credit for?

Or has he just lucked his way into no one noticing his "Heads I win, tails you lose" comment.

Confused? Well let's allow the big man himself to clarify things.

So Chuck should NY pull the trigger:

"If you're telling me that Landry Fields and Danillo Gallinari are holding up that deal then something's wrong."

Oh right, so we should accept then right Chuck, that's what you are saying?

"Melo isn't Michael Jordan, if he says he's prepared to go to free agency to play for the Knicks I say prove it young man."

Right Charles so what the Knicks should do is make the trade and then not make the trade, you know just to cover all their bases. Thanks for that.

It should be noted I love the man but sometimes I think his word is given a bit TOO much credit.

There's a reason why he's doing circus sideshow commentary on TBS & not in the front office running an NBA franchise.

I like both comments and I think you're taking out of context a bit.

I'll take these in reverse,

The second comment about Melo not being MJ was a response to him pushing this thing to happen now. Barkley's saying who the fack does this kid think he is?? I'd like him to show some balls and wait for FA too, if he really cares about winning like he says he does. Fuggin spiatch..

The first comment was concerning the first offer to Denver of Gallo, Chandller, Curry, 1st and Felton, which Denver has no business haggling over.

I can see where you are coming from with the second comment but the first comment was clearly that no one we have in any deal Denver have come with is worth not losing for Melo. He's saying I don't care how good Gallo or Fields are, they shouldn't stop us making the deal.

So he's contradicting himself at worst and covering his bases at best.

I may be wrong, lol but I don't think Gallo and Fields were ever stopping us from making a deal. We told Denver to pick one of the two and they chose Gallo so there's no issue on that from our end. I think he's referring to the rumors of continued haggling on Denver's part.

I'm still not understanding the whole "he should come as an FA if he cares about winning" comments.

So in essence...he should come as an FA -- so in 2012 he has to watch Gallo and Felton walk as opposed to watching Billups, Carter, and maybe Shelden Williams, walk earlier?

How is it caring more about winning to watch current Knicks walk after signing as an FA, as opposed to watching the same cap holding players, that you were traded with, walk? And how is that his concern?

Because those players were throwing in unnecessarily now could be used to get other assets in some form or fashion. This will make the team better too. If you using assets you don't have to use, then you won't have them for something else that will help the team win. Get it now?

Again I know what you mean but Barkley was just talking in general as in nothing should stop us making the deal from what we have to give and what they want.

I may have the quote (which is paraphrased and not exact) wrong but that's what I heard watching All Star Saturday.

I've always got that, but you're assuming that there's a team out there that's going to eat both contracts and give up draft picks in an NBA that's likely going to have a lower cap and possibly a hard cap.

What's to stop them from doing what everyone else on here wants the Knicks to do to Denver and just say "nah...we'll keep our draft picks and just sign them as FAs, cause we know you guys can't keep them" That only works for us against Denver but not against us when we'd have potential FAs that we can't keep? Why? Because it's more convenient for the discussion?

We won't be able to trade them and get back equal contracts, and we know that the both of them won't be enough to land us either CP3 or D-Will in a trade. So what value do they really have to us? From a cold, calculating, objective, standpoint. Not one where we're fans.

Good points. But couldn't they be used to help us get players like CP3 or D-Will. If we don't have them we can't use them. Right??

They might be able to, but both CP3 and D-Will make $16mil in the 2011-2012 season. We'd need to throw more assets into the deal just to equal the value of either guy's contract. Who's going to make up the extra $4-6mil difference?

It could end up causing more problems than it solves. Or we can let the guys go now and assure our cap space for that offseason and put ourselves in the best possible position to sign one of the two guys without having to give up extra assets (whoever it would take to make up the difference in $ between Felton, Gallo and CP3 or D-Will.)

no, he's actually a lot more stupid them people give him credit. he got a job not based on his knowledge of the game, but because he was the worst trashtalker in the league when he played and his mouth gets him into so much trouble on TV it's hilarious.

"I dunno, i don't know if i want to be gettin any older. I'm poppin them viagra's like tic tac's Maria, so i dunno if I wanna be getting any older" - Sir Charles Barkley @ half time during the ASG.
