Isiah Thomas has survived his one-season ultimatum, with a month to spare. Thomas, the Knicks' president and coach, will be given a multiyear extension today, according to a person briefed on the matter.
The extension means that James L. Dolan, the Madison Square Garden chairman, has seen the "evident progress" that he demanded of Thomas last June. Dolan ordered Thomas to coach the team after firing Larry Brown and told Thomas he had one year to show progress or be fired as both coach and president.
With 19 games left to play, the Knicks have shown clear progress, though they remain a losing team, at 29-34. Over the weekend, the Knicks moved into eighth place in the Eastern Conference, which would qualify them for the playoffs. The Knicks have not been to the postseason since 2004.
