It was a seemingly perpetual saga that finally came to an emphatic end. Mired in controversy, it became apparent that the stipulations between owner, James Dickhole Dolan, and Knicks General manager, Donnie Walsh, were temporarily suspended as Dolan 'went over the head' of his time worn and tested employee in an expensive bid to make sure Carmelo Anthony came home to New York.

After the frenzy was over, Melo was a Knick, so was Chauncey Billups, and the entire team was uprooted in one of the more massive tradings of personnel in NBA history.

A star was reborn.

The transition on the floor, however, was not as smooth as even the most staunch realist would have predicted. Though after winning against Milwaukee in their first game, culminated by the victory that was nationally televised in South Beach - the game in which Carmelo displayed his deft scoring and defensive capabilities against LeBron James - the Knicks abruptly found themselves mired in a 6 game losing streak, and fell under .500 dropping to 7th in the east. The relentless pressure of the media and its surrounding hype loomed over Anthony and the Knicks, with Melo being the metaphorical vortex at the center of the storm.

Then, when all seemed bleak, Carmelo Anthony's competitive urge, along with necessary adjustments from coaching staff and fellow players, manifested in to him becoming, even more so than before, one of the absolute elite players in the league.

Averaging over 30 points, 10 rebounds and an impressive +50% field goal and 3 point field goal average in victories where he was by far the alpha baller on the court against any and all opponents, Carmelo reestablished his place amongst the upper echelon of NBA superstars with a resounding clatter .

Now, he brings his intoxicating stardom to the postseason for the first time as a New York Knickerbocker, eclipsing the anticipation of his late season trade as the city of New York, Knick fans around the world and all members of knicksonline.com collectively hold their breath as the pressure mounts and the expectations rise.​

Carmelo's journey on the quest for basketball's holy grail was never as challenging as his encounter with the Dallas Mavericks in 2010's Western Conference Semi Finals.​

This will come down to a battle of wills. Melo is the stronger, more athletic end far less likely to drain a man's bag of the 2. Pierce is the more experienced and equivalently clutch performer.

As the best offensive isolation scorer in the game, Melo will be able to get his shots when and where he wants them. Pierce will be helped as often as possible with Carmelo, and if Anthony is to get the ball on the block, the double will most likely come from a big. Carmelo's passing game and D'Antoni's offence must both be prepared and prompted to utilise this advantage. Cpt. STAT can maintain an average of 25+ PPG if our offence is ready to create off the mismatch and subsequent double team.

Pierce plays well defensively as a team member, but his one on one D is suspect and his lateral movement when guarding penetration has long been covered by Boston's prompt defensive rotations in the paint. He's dropped in pace significantly, but his need to run on defence will be lessened against NY, who don't rebound and break well enough to utilise the speed, strength, youth and athleticism of their wing players.

Head to head, this will, on paper, be Melo's series. Grit, however, is not a measurable entity in a box score. Melo's mental fortitude will have to be at least the equivalent of his clear physical advantage.

We've seen mere flashes of his athleticism. Dunks, blocks and rebounds. Will we see his offerings in the post season against the Celtics? Have to wait and see.

He'll be potentially sharing the reserve SF role with both Landry Fields, Sky Walker and Shawne Williams.

In a 1 on 1 matchup Melo would destroy Pierce.

But the NBA is not a 1 on 1 league, it's 5 against 5.

I still think we have an advantage at the 3. Melo is the best small forward in the game these days.

the only thing i worry about with melo or stat or even billups for that matter is foul trouble. i have no doubt that our guys can come out on top everygame as long as they play but if they get in foul trouble, that leads to limited minutes, timid defense and is not a good look. but thats a conversation for another thread

I think for the Knicks to have success in this series, and possibly even force a game 7 we will need Melo to pass the ball well and set up his teammates.

Pierce is a solid defender when he wants to be (similar to Melo). Just like when Melo stepped up in the Western Confrence Finals on D against Kobe, Pierce did the same in the Finals a few years back and did a hell of a job. Both players are going to step their game up come playoff time on both sides of the court.

However we are not the Lakers. Doc isnt going to have Pierce play soley one on one with Melo as we dont have the same weapons that LA has/had, he is going to send help and when this happens Melo needs to find the open man and make the Celtics pay for double teaming him.

Either way this is going to be an epic matchup. Two clutch performers that are known for bigtime shots going head to head, battling in a first round matchup between Boston and NY. Sit back and get your popcorn, this is going to be one hell of a show IMO! :gony:
