NYK-MIN rumor: Douglas for Flynn; & Knicks want a SG

FROM ROTOWORLD:

"The Knicks have had preliminary discussions about trading Toney Douglas to the Wolves for Jonny Flynn.

The Knicks are looking for "prototype point guard" to back up Chauncey Billups for at least next season, and may also have interest in Cavs guard Ramon Sessions (expendable with Baron Davis in town and Kyrie Irving likely to be drafted No. 1). Flynn's fantasy value could spike in New York, but it likely wouldn't happen while Billups is healthy."

"The Knicks have discussed a trade that would send Toney Douglas to Minnesota in exchange for Jonny Flynn.

Douglas is coming off major shoulder surgery, but he does expect to be playing by July. His range has improved and he's a solid defender, but he lacks playmaking skills and therefore makes a shaky backup PG, which is what the Knicks need. There is no deal imminent, but clearly both Flynn and Douglas are available for the right price."

"The NY Daily News reports that the Timberwolves "have been busy shopping Jonny Flynn and Michael Beasley, trying to get a center in return."
The Wolves may be expecting to draft Derrick Williams at No. 2, making Beasley expendable, and with Ricky Rubio inbound they don't need Flynn. They apparently turned down a chance to get Chris Kaman, which implies that they're setting their sights rather high -- and lends credence to their rumored "interest" in guys like Pau Gasol, JaVale McGee, and Andrew Bogut."

ALSO...

"The Knicks reportedly do not feel that Landry Fields can be "a starting shooting guard on a playoff power."
Accordingly, they have added 'starting SG' to their list of needs, along with finding a backup PG and adding depth to the frontcourt. They can address their desire for a SG by taking Klay Thopmson on draft day, assuming he's available at No. 17."

"The Knicks are reportedly eager to draft Washington State SG Klay Thompson with the No. 17 pick.
Thompson "outperformed Jimmer Fredette in their June 2 Westchester workout," and fills a perceived need for the Knicks at SG. They could also take defensive specialist Chris Singleton, a forward from Florida State, but he's likely to be off the board by then. Other names mentioned as potential targets include Kansas PG Josh Selby, USC PF Nikola Vucevic, and UCLA swingman Tyler Honeycutt."

Um... No? I don't want to trade Douglas for Flynn. Toney is a bigger spark off the bench than Flynn would be.

Its not about a spark of the bench. It's about getting someone who could actually run the offense and get Amare and Melo the ball in high opportunity positions. No he's not a better shooter than TD but he's a better pg.

This is what the team needs to be better. I'm sure they don't want to have CB logging too many minutes next season.

This could be a good move... although I'd miss TD's 3's and defense Flynn would be our version of JJ Barea... He def wouldn't play better then CB but we could speed the game up and still keep things organized.

No on trading Douglas for Flynn. Douglas won several games for us this year.

I like the idea of picking Klay Thompson. He would be a good fit at SG.

So are you saying he's more valuable than a young true pg just because he had a hot hand a few times last season? Let's not forget how inept he was when all he needed to do was run the offense. We already have two guys who can win games for us.

Flynn is better for the stability of the team IMO.

Yep, if you take Flynn out of that quasi-motion/broken ass triangle system they run in Minni and let him utilize more picks and run the offense instead of having to get to spots and play off the ball as much as he does on the ball, I expect an improvement similar to Darren Collinson when Indy did the same exact thing. Under O'brien, they ran that motion offense where DC had to get to spots and be "just another guy in the offense" and once they made the decision to put the ball back in his hands and let him use pick and rolls, and create...well you saw what he and Psycho-T did to the Knicks in that "home and away" series.

I don't think Flynn is quite as explosive, but I expect similar improvements. Plus it's not a coincidence that a team that has a plethora of PGs want TD...BECAUSE HE IS NOT A POINT GUARD IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM (well maybe form, because he's short...but that's it.)

Plus, the fact that TD23 is great defensively. Flynn's no where as good as Douglas on defense, and defense is what we need.

If you were to say that getting Flynn would mean that we could improve our chances of getting CP3, than I am doing this trade in a heartbeat- But of course there is no guarantees.

TD is a good defender but I think we need to be cautious throwing the word "great" around. He was probably the worst defender in the BOS series. He was horrible. TD is good in the passing lanes but not that good of an on-ball defender.

I agree, he is shaky at times- Definitely very on/off player, but he's still young and learning.

But if there's one I choose between Flynn, TD, or Ramon Sessions to try to get/keep- I definitley would want Sessions. With the Cavs getting Irving and having Baron this makes Sessions expendable, and I would love to see him play for the Knicks over Flynn or TD23.

I like Toney, our MIP 2010-11.

I think a starting SG is much more of an issue right now than finding a backup PG. Flynn is talented, no doubt but will he ever reach his potential? Plus he's a downgrade on defense compared to Toney.

I'd rather keep Toney.

Being a huge Syracuse mark I'll try no to be biased.

I like Toney Douglas I think he's a solid player and if it's just him for Flynn I dont know who I would truly pick. I feel TD's defense is a big overrated and his spark off the bench wont be as necessary if we have a core of PGs in place all game to distribute the ball. Another shooter wouldnt hurt either.

If it was possible to throw Toney Douglas, Landry Fields and Renaldo balkman together for Johnny Flynn and the 20th pick I'd do it.

We get another passer/playmaker off the bench (with more potential than any three of those guys frankly) and we have the chance to see where the chips fall in the draft.

Without moving up cause at that point I dont see that to be an option.. Id see if Klay Thompson falls to 17.. if not we take Tyler Honeycutt (hoping he adds weight) or Jordan Hamilton to help on the SG role. And bismack biyombo with the 20th to fill our shot blocking needs. very cheap players that could instantly contribute.

Overall I would do the Flynn trade but it depends at what price.

Do the deal for Flynn. He can run an offense. TD has yet to show he can. I haven't see enough signs that this will change. I like this deal.

I also agree w the assessment that Fields isn't a starting 2 in the league. His handle is terrible and he can't shoot off the dribble. We need to draft Marshon Brooks @ 17. That kid can ball..

Since the Melo deal, we do not run a fast-paced offense. Before the Melo deal I would agree, we needed a true PG to give Felton rest and run the system properly. We do not run that same system anymore. It turned into a slow-down, iso-Melo system more than anything. The run-n-gun, pick-and-roll, ball movement system left when Melo arrived.

A PG that can play defense and hit the open jumper is just fine. While TD is streaky, he did win many games for us, particularly the winning streak at the end of the year where he was instrumental in many of those wins. I agree with Sprewell-Houston, a quality starting SG is a more pressing need.

It's looking more and more likely that Brooks will go before we pick, but if we can get him at 17...golden.

But Klay wouldn't be a bad pick either, he might actually have the higher upside of the two, and he's bigger, but he's a little less athletic and he's not as efficient.

But still...Billups, Flynn/Jenkins, Brooks/Thompson/Burks, and Fields is a nice platoon to have in the backcourt.

I dunno why so many think this won't be a compelling draft, this shit is getting exciting, lol.

Let me take a moment out of Fathers Day/birthday to point out this: if Knicks wanted J-Flynn, they could have had him in Melo deal

I think flynn would be great for this team, hes very athletic and fast, i think he would do great in d'antoni's sytem, theres also the possibilty of getting ramon sessions who would also be great. I'll take either one. Then we would def. need to draft a big man thursday.

It would be amazinbg if B-Smack fell to us, but I think we will have to trade up to get him, hes is a ferocious shot blocker and can grab a lot of boards. He would be perfect for this team.

markieff morris would be another good option if B-Smack isnt there, cuz he also would be great for the team because we need a guy that is physical and has kind of a KG mean streak to him. He plays great D, but needs to work on his offensive game.
