Default CP3 or D12 ....what we need

ok so bear with me its big of a long read.

So i was listening to a simmons podcast and there was an interesting conversation about about how the best offense is not the one with the best player or multiple players or even great shooters, but the best offense is the one that moves the ball. in crunch time, when the ball finds the open man, team succeeds. point blank!
Now also they mentioned that dallas and the hornets were the 2 best teams at outscoring their opponents in cruchtime (last 3-5 mins of the game).
Specifically the hornets, they absolutely murdered everyone in the league when it came to crunchtime scoring and the point the other guy was making was that CP3 was not the guy taking the shots, he wasnt the guy scorning....but he was finding the right guy when it mattered. Now i dont know how good monty williams might be in the future as a coach but he is not the reason NOH had a successful year. its CP3.
The more we sit back and dissect success and the blueprint for winning we should realize that we need CP3 not because he can be our big 3 or that bs. and thats what it is....bs cuz any given night a guy can disappear ( wade in the chi series, lebron in the finals) or a can step up (billups in the game vs the heat). i digress..... we need CP3 cuz he fits what the model for success is. he is a huge huge cog for the whole system to work optimally. ask yourselves this, yes melo carried us on his back but we got swept when we didnt have billups or stat and yea we had basically melo and a bunch of bench players. but CP3 didnt have that much better of a team against the lakers but what he was able to bring to the table was so crucial that it made a huge difference (they won 2 games when their starting center was 6'8 ish going up against bynum and pao and lamar).
i can make the same case for D12. we need what he brings and no one does it better than him. if we can get dalembert for 5mil/yr im all for it but again point being, we need a specific ELITE skillset to roundout our team to a championship level.....thas my 2 cents, holla bak let me know how u guys see it.....

I read it the same way. an elite distributor is what is needed. billups is more of a 3 pt specialist then a pass first pure pg. He worked best on the detroit teams where he was surrounded by talent at every position. He also did well on the nuggets, again a pretty deep team, at least offensively.

With the knicks lacking a starting 5 or a scoring 2 guard he is being asked to do too much. CP3 is the answer for this team. Even if everyone any their mother screams about how much we need a big, we need someone to facilitate Melo and Amare's games. I think CP3 does that more so then dwight, tho I think either would translate into great post-season success.

The question is not, cp3 vs. dwight. It's do we jettison yet another year to go after them this summer? We could go out and get dalembert, grant hill, etc to go after a title run this year. Or do we stand on this hand and see where it takes us this year and hope that our cap space and star power brings us a CP3 or Dwight. Keep in mind that the CBA is changing and no one knows where it will leave the knicks as far as taking a run at them go. I know cp3 said "our own big three in NY" at melo's wedding, but when that means earning less then max money or less then Melo and Amar'e do you think he'll join??

    things to think about.

    Default Want vs. Do

I would want D12 more. CP3 would give us elite distribution and adequate defense at the PG. D12 would give us a dominant post up player and elite defender at the C.

However, D12 IMHO is not gettable. CP3 is very gettable.

So, the focus should be on getting CP3 and a complimentary piece (or pieces) at center and backup forward (since we went out and plugged the other hole [hopefully] an elite back-court defender [Iman Shumpert].

BTW, I liked Singleton more because I saw him as spelling both Stat and Melo. However, I like Shumpert as well, and you cannot fill two holes with one draft pick. It may very well be that it is easier to find the right FA player (Reggie Evans?) that is as good or better than Singleton; while the right FA player for the Shumpert role is less gettable or is too expensive.

well keep in mind that as far as what we're gonna do, our course of action has already been layed out for us. As per Donnie Walsh's parting comments.....we're not gonna get grant hill or anyone that wants more than a 1 year deal and jeopardize our salary cap structure. whether the new gm somehow connives dolan into changing that stance, is yet to be seen.

I prefer Howard. He will help with our rebounding and defense immensely which are two of our biggest needs. He can operate in the low post on offense which works well with Amare on the elbow and Melo on the wing doing his iso thing.

Paul would be nice but I'm very concerned about his knee. That can develop into bone-on-bone in a few years and he can go the way of Brandon Roy.

CP3 could be a coach right now... I'll take him.

This is really tough. I think D12 would make more of an impact in areas that we most need, such as Defensive presence and rebounding.

Although, CP3 would bring leadership- As well as knowing how to successfully distribute the ball equally to Carmelo and STAT, while also contributing on the defensive side with steals.

Only downside of getting Chris Paul in my opinion is his knee and what it could possibly develop into i.e. Brandon Roy as someone mentioned earlier.

I would much rather have Dwight which is rather on the hopeful side, but I think it is much more realistic to obtain Chris Paul and I would NOT be disappointed with the skill level and knowledge this guy has of the game.
