Question Mark JJ Barea turned down 3 years and 9 Mil from Knicks

JJ Barea signed a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves for 4 years at 19 million dollars giving him 4.75 mil per year.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] It was my moment. I'm 27 and peaking and you have to take advantage of that. I would love to be with a contender, but this is a job and with this I guarantee the future of my family." [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Knicks gave him the mini mid level at 2.5 mil per and then rose it to 3 mil per year for 3 years.

He would have most likely been the starter on a contending team with Fields, Melo, Amare, and his buddy from Dallas Tyson Chandler.

He turned down the opportunity to play in NYC with one of the best lineups in the NBA for the Timberwolves!?!?!

I know 4.75 mil per year is more than 3 but he won't be the starter for long with Ricky Rubio waiting so he just went for the big money and didn't care about the rings.

WOW...smh...i guess when you get one ring you don't care about them anymore.

shows you he wanted the money i guess if you look at it like that, wouldve liked him here in NY and he couldve been a fan favorite and NY favorite with a huge population of PRicans, i dont understand the move. hope we offer the 3x9mil to crawford i sort of want em now, him off the bench would be a spectacular pickup

I think it's good we didn't match the T-Pups' offer.

I dunno what it is with David Kahn and PGs but honestly Barea is good but not THAT good. He's an average backup who's not an amazing defender. He's a good shooter, but so is Mike Bibby. He can run an offense, but so can Baron Davis, and he's better at it.

Lame.. I guess he figured hes got a ring, and this is probably largest stock he'd ever have on the free agency market.

Crawford would thrive with Mike D's chuck 3's system lol

    Crawford would be solid.

I guess that would take away Shawne Williams from the equation and it would put guys like Lanry Fields and Shumpert at the 3 sometimes if Crawford was on our team.

I'm actually glad we didn't sign him. He's 5'9 and nowhere near as athletic as Nate. I'd rather stick with Bibby, Douglas, Shumpert than a 5'9 midget as our starting PG - and he's not that good of a passer either.

He was great for Dallas last year, because he could come on for 8-10 minute spurts where he attacked the paint with his speed and scored a lot, behind or next to Kidd's great playmaking skills....nowhere near starting material in the NBA. Pretty much a lot less athletic version of Nate.

Music to my ears man. Didn't want Berea. And I don't want Jamal Crawford either. It's overkill. Everyone has some degree of faith in TD, esp. coach. The playoffs were a different story, but Toney actually did play well last yr in the starting role when Chauncey went down. And I think he led the league in 3pt FGs made after the all-star break...There's something to build one there. Then there's Bibby in the backup role -- I don't love him at this pt in his career but he's OK, he can still shoot and take care of the ball I guess, and we did give him $1.4M...And then there's Shumpert who I'd actually like to see Mike play a little.

Shumpert's the biggest reason I don't want Crawford. Like I said, I wanna see Shump get some time and getting Crawford would definitely cut into this kid's PT. That's first of all. Second, I think he wouldn't be the best influence on Shump game-wise. Not saying Craw's a bad guy, I know he's a good, well-spoken dude -- I just wouldn't want Shump to turn into the type of player he is. Shump could be so much more than some bad-shot chucker. I want Shump to become a complete player who recongizes good shot selection. He ain't learning that from Crawford, that's for **** sure.. I could definitely see him picking up bad habits from Crawford.

Unless we get word that Baron Davis becomes available, I think we're OK at the point. Davis would be a difference maker here -- I think this bad back thing is a smoke screen (he sees the writing on the wall in Cleveland and might be trying to angle his way out) and I read this morning that he may be bought out rather than amnestied which would mean we'd have first crack at him and wouldn't have to wait to see if he got claimed before it became our turn. He wants to come here---who knows, Gilbert might actually save a little money if he buys him out rather than going the amnesty route...I say we're OK at PG for now (I still like that cheap Euro. league options like Ben Hansbrough & Curtis Jerrells are only a phone call away if we ever consider the possibility of going that route)..

TD, backed up by Bibby and Shumpert. That's not terrible man. We could always make an adjustment on the fly if we had to...If Davis doesn't look to be an option, I say go get one more legit 2/3 swingman (Reggie Williams 1, Shawne Williams 1a) and then let's got to war.

Thank god, that would be an awful signing unless he was going to be used as a peice to bring in someone useful. He would be no better or worse then having TD and a waste of salary space

Different length deals, but let's say JJ basically locked himself up an extra 4M over the next 2.

He's 27, and like he said it's his time to make money.

After taxes, his extra 4M is really more like an extra 2M.

IMO, after his deal with the Wolves, he will be in line for another short-term contract in the 3M/year range, and at the age he will then be (29-30), it could actually be his last before dropping down to a whole new pay level.

If he came to us, he would have been in THE single best place to get visibility, playoff lore, playing time, and an elevation in his stats and overall game.

It's pretty likely, barring injury, that after a 2 or 3 year stint with us, he could be in a 5M+ longer term contract territory of life.

Tough to fault a guy for locking in an extra 4M over a few years, but.....seems like he played this one extremely close to the vest and conservatively. Especially considering he's going to a basement dwelling team in Minnesota....vs us.

You gotta keep in mind that this will be his first and probably last chance for a decent contract. Can't blame the guy.

I view him more as a specialist who can disrupt teams that don't have a speedy defender. Otherwise, he's more of a liability. Smaller guys also tend to get worse with age as well.

Eh, at least he's honest. When that contract expires he probs won't get offered much, so he's investing in his retirement.

Good for him, decent player but I like it more when players want to come here.

I heard that David Kahn was disappointed that he couldn't acquire Chauncey Billups and Mike Bibby and that the T'Wolves weren't even mentioned by the media as a potential team for Chris Paul.
