Default Layden eyes new euro guy

SALT LAKE CITY - With Milos Vujanic falling off their radar screen for next season, Knicks GM Scott Layden brought up an unlikely name from the past yesterday, another European Knick draft choice - 7-foot-1 French phantom Frederic Weis.

For the first time in two years, Layden raised the possibility of Weis playing for the Knicks. Mostly, he's tried to distance himself from their 1999 first-round pick chosen by the old regime.

In the wake of Vujanic's agent telling The Post the Yugoslavian point guard won't play for the Knicks next season, Layden said he hasn't given up on Weis, a backup center for the Spanish team Malaga.

Layden said the franchise may try to bring Weis over for July summer league, which will be extended to two weeks - one in Boston, one in Utah.

"Maybe we need to get him back over, I don't know," Layden said "He's 25. He's still a young guy. He's got that thing you can't teach. It wouldn't be out of the question to have him come over."

The Knicks last made a serious attempt to get Weis to play summer league in 2000. Kevin Wilson, their European scout, has watched Weis play this season, but repairs must be made to the relationship. Sources from the old Ed Tapscott regime say Weis was so turned off by Jeff Van Gundy's harsh treatment, he soured on the NBA. Weis had a horrendous summer-league in 1999.

    New Euro guy? Not really.

Layden should leave the French pastry alone. He sucks. He's a backup for a European team. He'll get straddle-dunked by Vince Carter at least four times a season in the NBA.

    Scotty is out of ideas.
