Default Elton Brand amnestied by Sixers

The 76ers have elected to use their amnesty clause on Elton Brand, according to sources. Brand has one season at $18 million left on his contract, which will come off Philadelphia's cap. The 76ers must wait until July 11th to officially amnesty Brand. Brand will go on waivers and become an unrestricted free agent if he goes unclaimed.

So, first to throw it out there was Hahn:

Alan Hahn: Hmm, Peekskill, N.Y.'s Elton Brand as a very cheap vets minimum backup to Tyson Chandler.....any takers? about 6 minutes ago

How the hell one considers a 6'5" guy past his prime as a backup in the middle? Guy can still rebound, but backing up Tyson is loco!!!

Brand is one of the best post defenders in the NBA and can back up Amare/Chandler

His mid range jumper is money too.

Teams under the Cap are allowed to get first dibs, would love him back home in New York but it's HIGHLY unlikely dont get your hopes up
    ______________

Mavericks, sources say, are one under-the-cap team to already express interest in claiming Elton Brand through amnesty waiver process

    According to this he's 6-8 or 6-9:

In 1999, for months leading up to the draft, rumors circulated about [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]’s true height. Brand had always been listed at 6’8” or 6’9” in college, but many people didn’t buy it. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], another player from the draft class, said Brand was closer to 6’6”, and the rumor was Brand was actually only 6’5 ½” barefoot.

Brand was viewed as a top 5 pick by most already, but many questioned if he was tall enough to play the power forward in the NBA. Only [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] had found success at the power forward position in recent years at around 6’6”, and they possessed superior athleticism.

Brand however had been insisting he was measured 6’8” without shoes at Duke, and he was confident he would measure at that size again. Brand showed up to the camp and measured 6’8 ¼” without shoes, 6’9 ½” with shoes and with an amazing 7’5 ½” wingspan, and 9’2” standing reach. That showed he not only had more than enough length to play power forward, but enough to play some center too.

Jerry Krause explained that Brand had a short neck and that a long neck is wasted height in basketball. Brand in reality can play like a 6’11” player despite measuring just over 6’8”. The Chicago Bulls then drafted Brand first overall, and he has had easily the best career of any player from that draft class.

Not only can he rebound and block like a seven footer.. he can also scratch his ankles without bending over.

He's making 18M his final year. I think there's a good chance he clears waivers. NY is home, the Knicks would be a perfect fit for him if he does.

Probably the slowest and least athletic player in the league, no thanks.

I think it would be criminal if we didn't take Brand of waivers if it was possible, but it's not possible, so NEXTTTT

Since teams under cap will get first dibs, expect the Mavs to get Brand after losing out on Terry and Kidd. Cuban needs something for his fans to look forward to.
