Knicks sign... Chris Smith???

Ok, I realize this has to be a non-guaranteed, training camp invite, similar to Chris Copeland, though Copeland is a better bet to make the team. Are we thinking this is a nice gesture or what? Wasn't particularly impressed with Smith in Vegas, imagine we have to be able to do better than this for the 15th roster spot, I'd get a specialist or leave it open as mentioned before for D league call ups in the event of a mid season injury. I won't read too much into this until training camp is ending and we see a guaranteed roster, but can't sit here and say this makes alot of sense to me. Again, if he's just being given a shot to battle in camp and earn a 15th spot I have no problem, but if we think we're going to just give him that spot, idk don't wanna make a big deal about a roster spot that shouldn't be significant, but I feel we could get better insurance options than him. Is important though to find someone for the last roster spots that can be content working hard and not playing in real game time, you plug a solid veteran into those roles they often get sour... thoughts?

Not too much to read into it. JR Smith signed for a nice deal with us. Could he have gotten something better on the open market? Maybe. It's a goodwill gesture to JR. Get Chris into camp, not only will he get paid for his time, but maybe he shows something to scouts.....whether here or overseas. He won't be on the opening day roster.

Yeah kinda my thoughts, assuming non-guaranteed he can be cut anytime, so it's a nice gesture to give him a training camp with an NBA team, however if by December Brewer or someone is hurt and I'm on here posting "can Chris Smith fill in adequately?" then I have a problem!

Confirmed Chris Smith has been invited to training camp but JRs bro didn't even start on Vegas summer league team.

Now lets just hope the league doesn't add 2+2 together and penalize us for circumventing the salary cap by getting JR on a sweetheart deal.

Haha right on, but I feel we've had opportunities to wink at people before to help circumvent salary cap and didn't do it, I know you aren't allowed to do the "I'll take care of you later" thing or the "we'll give you this business opportunity to make up the money thing" but if anyone could pull that it'd be the Knicks. A Lebron TV on MSG or the Jeremy Lin Buffet (A favorite of ex-Knicks Eddy Curry and Jerome James) never came to fruition, so I doubt this was a promise or anything. Second thought, Jeremy Lin Buffet could have been a genius career move as it would have not only kept Lin in NY but would have retired Felton early creating more playing time for Lin...

This is what pisses me off about sports and politics....Chris SMith was not impressive at all...matter of fact the guy was hard to watch sometimes.

He is a tweener, like CLyde said. He is a worse version of J.R Smith

I can name a bunch of guys that played much better and deserved a spot over him...Art Parakhouski, Mustafa Farrakhan, Wesley Witherspoon, and Dion Waiters....all played much better than Smith and Farrakhan and Waiters were the only guards that can run the team at a decent level withou giving up the ball a million times.

I know this probably doesn't matter but this guy is clearly on this team to make J.R feel better and because Chris is J.R's brother.

Kind of sad that Chris SMith did not even start on our 0-5 summer league team. I remember watching him and saying he is a D leaguer at best.

It just baffles me how a guy can be picked up over so many better players than him because he is the brother of a current player, unbelievable. I thought this stuff stopped once we got to the college level...guess not SMH

I called it.

best case he is there to go to the bayhawks

worse case he is there to ride the pine and give JR smith's family a extra source of income.

either way whats new guys? lets not act shocked by this its the Knicks where nepotism is king.

Guys calm down, its not guaranteed and he's just here for a thank you to JR.

It's a silly move but Martin and the other Free Agent PF's are obviously looking for more money. Between Amare's 32mpg, Novak playing 5min there and more at SF and Chris Copeland (who can actually post up and play inside well) who may score 5mpg there as well.

Camby & Kurt Thomas will probably see some minutes their as well so isn't the worst move in the world. But seriously?! A PG/SG, we are stacked in both those positions.

Im sure that before JR signed the 2.8M deal he asked Grunwald to take an 'extra' look at his bro as a favor..
Grunwald is just being a man of his word...

JR was not offered a better deal......does anyone remember hearing about any other offer JR received ?
Class move by the Knicks....lets sign the brother of a guy who has not been at all a class act in society and even better lets sign his borther who did not even start on our 0-5 squad.....makes zero sense...

You guys are making way too big of a deal out of something that shouldn't be taken seriously. Guys get signed to the training camp roster all the time. We've done it with Patrick Ewing Jr. like 4 times now. Doesn't mean he'll make the team. Calm down

I don't understand this "signing" at all, I mean, I watched every Summer League game and he was below average to say the least!
This is a business, so we're not here to do favours to anyone, but the only explanation I get for this is that the team made a HUGE ONE to JR...

Lol I know you mean that small dude Whiters from Vegas but at first I got a good laugh that you seemed to be telling us a lottery pick would be a better addition that Chris Smith... sorry, not trying to pick on you for a miscue just took me a second to realize who you meant!
