Exclamation [NY Times] Madison Square Garden Is Told to Move

The New York City Council notified the arena that it has 10 years to vacate its 45-year-old premises and find a new home, the Garden’s fifth since it opened in 1879.

Ten years should be enough time, officials said, for the Garden to find a new location and for the city to devise plans for an expanded Pennsylvania Station, which currently sits below the Garden, and the redevelopment of the surrounding neighborhood.

James L. Dolan, who controls the Garden, the Knicks and the Rangers, offered a low-key response to the news that barely acknowledged the 10-year deadline. Mr. Dolan expects to complete this fall a $968 million overhaul of the Garden, which has been closing in its off-seasons to accommodate the work.

“Madison Square Garden has operated at its current site for generations, and has been proud to bring New Yorkers some of the greatest and most iconic moments in sports and entertainment,” Mr. Dolan’s company said in a statement issued Wednesday afternoon. “We now look forward to the reopening of the arena in the fall of 2013.”

While this news sounds pretty scary to me, i must admit i have no idea what relocating an arena consists in. Does it mean that the Garden will be disassembled from the current location and reassembled into a new one or it's going to be demolished plain and simple for a new one will be built? That $1 billion investment that's about to be completed soon gives me the creeps if it's just to last another decade.

It was over 50 years ago that the original Penn Station was torn down to make way for MSG so it would be ironic if MSG is to be demolished for whatever comes next. Dolan was low key because this may never happen, they have been talking about this for years and nothing to date has been done.

They should do an arena in the Bronx, theres enough space and it's close to Manhattan and Queens...distant from Brooklyn so it makes sense for the Knicks to be in the BX.

Do you remember what it looks like? I've only seen pictures, I imagine you could make an economic case for having MSG there instead of a massive rotunda no matter how beautiful the architecture is.

The city has been talking about a complete transformation of the area and the rail systems for years now but the money required to finance it is enormous along with the fact that there are half million people that come through there everyday who would be inconvenienced if it does happen.

10 years from now Dolan takes this matter to court case gets heard 3 years from that then a verdict is handed out which them gets appealed by the loser to a higher court then that verdict is appealed to the Supreme Court some 5 years after that

Maybe NYC is forming a conspiracy to get rid of Dolan.

-Dolan spends almost a Billion on reformats.
-NYC tells him he has to move
    -Dolan is depressed
    -Sells Knicks
    -Gets purchased by someone intelligent
-NYC says JK, Knicks stay in MSG
    -Championship.

based on this article, it says that the shareholders have 10 years to figure out what to do with the spot. that would include relocating the current garden. if they don't figure it out in ten years, msg could apply for another extension to stay at the current spot. msg is not guaranteed to move in ten years.

The issue was included in a Mad Men plot in season 3. The party line was NYC needs to grow and change is inevitable.
