Mike Woodson FIRED, 5 days after season end.

New team president Phil Jackson wasted little time making a widely anticipated coaching change, dropping the ax on Woodson Monday, just days after the Knicks? disastrous season mercifully ended on Wednesday without a playoff berth for the first time since 2010.

Woodson, 56, finishes his two-plus seasons as the team?s head coach with a record of 109-79, but the disappointment of a 37-45 mark this year ? for a team owner James Dolan believed was a championship contender ? proved too much for him to overcome.
His entire coaching staff was also let go

Reverting back to the other thread

“To be honest with you, Mike Woodson and me have become, he’s been a guy that I can talk to, almost a father figure, a friend, a guy that I can bounce stuff off,” an emotional Anthony said on Thursday. “I’ve been a guy he’s talked to multiple times, about multiple things in different situations.

So when that time comes, if it’s ready for me to step up and take that next step and say, ‘OK, Mike Woodson needs to stay or go . . .’ I don’t think it would come down to that, but I would back him.

“If he needs my recommendation whether it’s here or anywhere else, I’ll back him. I have nothing bad to say about Mike Woodson. I support him. For me as a player, I had some of my best years under Mike Woodson. So I would never have anything bad to say about Mike Woodson.”

Well Phil didn't think it would come down to that at all....lol

Matter of fact it doesn't appear it was even an option to consult Melo or anyone else for the matter. Probably won't consult anyone on the coaching hire either. Not thrilled in bringing in Steve Kerr just judging him off of some of his GM moves, but I wouldn't mind if he was part of an overall decision making process working in conjunction with Phil as an exec(not a coach). Maybe assistant GM or player personnel director. Not sure how I feel about forcing the Triangle offense into this organization I mean it's not like it's a widely ran system league-wide and we've only seen it work when the best players in the league are running it. I do like the fact Phil is giving folks DAT WORK though, he's getting busy. Hopefully he blowtorches everything else roster-wise to a charred smelting crisp.

I like that he got rid of all the coaches. Lets face it Herb was just there for a paycheck. I hope he blows up half our team too

Mills should have done this mid-season, maybe the coaching change would have lit a fire under these guys earlier and the Knicks wouldn't have missed the playoffs.

Foregone conclusion for Woody but who does Jackson bring in? If Jeff Van Gundy dropped a note to Phil saying he was interested PJ should sign him up in a heartbeat. Kerr seems like a smart guy but he comes across as to nice to be a head coach.

Just reading the Newsday article about possible replacements.

Kerr
Fisher
Rambis
Clemons
Shaw
Van Gundy

You have got to be crazy not to think Van Gundy isn't the best of that bunch.

i'm good with Kerr for a variety of reasons:
-he's currently an analyst who has a very good knowledge of the game, and ALL the teams and players.
-he played for PJ for years, knows the triangle offense and the basic principles of O&D.
-he'll be a first time coach, and moldable towards the Phil Jackson style of play, as if he isn't already made in that mold and cut from the same cloth.
-he's a former 3-point specialist, someone who will bode well for THJR to help become a complete player.
-he's smart
-former champion with Jackson-Bulls (3X) AND Popovich-Spurs (2X)

things would get interesting if kerr is coach and phil gets fisher to come in as an assistant...and when phil gets the team he wants, he just takes over coaching and turn kerr into another assistant

I think it would be more Hire Kerr and sign Fisher to a one year deal and then hire him as an assistant the following year,,,,,,,,

I don't see it happening for a number of reasons, but the Triangle used say 75% of the time and Van Gundy's Defense would be sweet...I don't see JVG leaving the booth though. He loves being with his family too much to come back (told me that in Tarrytown a while ago)

The money the Knicks will pay him can change his mind. His daughter has to be headed to college? Man up JVG the Knicks need you.

If he's managed his money well, I don't think his daughter's college payments are his worry. Maybe money will change his mind, but would be odd if the college bills will change it.

I'm sure he can manage his kids college educations even on his ESPN salary, I meant him and his wife might have an empty nest and staying home for his kids won't be a factor in him not taking an NBA coaches job.

He's also never won an NBA championship, I wonder how much he wants that.

And Phil Jackson is in full control now, might be way more enticing for him if he wants to win a championship. He might feel like he can just stick to coaching, how he wants to coach.

Next season, keep waiting
Woody didn't exactly get a fair shake in NY, but business is result oriented and he didn't get the required results. Had the Knicks made the playoffs we would very likely be on the verge of beating the Pacers. (Never believed in the Pacers, George is a Scottie Pippen at best.)

Hopefully Knicks fans wont turn on the next coach two seasons from now. It is an embarrassment how often we change coaches.

^c'mon man, what is a fair shake? losing games via boneheaded moves, like not calling timeouts, not fouling when leading by 3 points, playing sh*tty point guard Failton all season long and NOT playing Beno (at all) who led the Knicks to 6 straight wins? letting JR Sh*t play and play and play until he finally got his shot together when season was ending? Not giving quality minutes to Tyler and Torre and Aldridge until season was over? overplaying Melo and letting him lose almost every single game in the iso when it came to last second shots? losing 30 something games when leading in the 4th quarter?

you've gotta hand the overall blame to Dolan, who's been responsible for all changes in the front office, whether they've been fired or just quit because of little Jimmy's ironclad rule. Woodson played the blame game on injuries all season long, when he was responsible for the team on the floor, the minutes they played, and the way they performed, not to mention the sh*t morale of the team on a whole.

If Dolan lets Phil Jackson actually do his job without interference, we can only hope that the total cleaning out of the coaching staff is a first step in the right direction. f*ck Woodson.

One thing I hope is that PJ does not bring Herb Williams back. He's a nice enough guy but he represents the Knicks past, if PJ wants a new Knicks image don't bring back guys like Herb.

Steve Kerr is the best of that bunch by a long mile ..
Steve Kerr learned the hard way as a GM with Rookie of the year Amare Stoudemire. And letting a puppet assistant coach Mike Dantoni get to much fame from Steve Kerr getting rid of the Phoenix Suns individual players Marbury & Penny slow balling poor defensive talent in 2003-4 season, to let their highest paid player Shawn Marion leadership run and control the Phoenix Suns roster (The Matrix got the SSOL system from Jason Kidd, and used that system with Steve Nash & Amare to have a few successful seasons.).
Mike Dantoni refusal to bring in assistant coach Thibideu in the 2007 offseason, had the owner of the Phoenix Suns trade Shawn Marion for Franchise Player Shaq on the February 2008 trade deadline, which put Kerr's GM job in jeopardy.

What we get in Steve Kerr is a GM/Coach who played the Triangle-system and won, plus defended against the Triangle-system and won.
