Once upon a time to make the NCAA Basketball more exciting to the college students they added a 3 point line because 85% of the college basketball players were far from ever becoming a professional athlete.

Knicks President .. Phil Jackson Wants a 4-point line plus a 30-Second Shot Clock added to the NBA
...Ridiculous!
Now is the time for Phil Jackson to retire from the NBA for life ... when u listen to Phil reason for change

?Why not have a 4-point line about 35 feet out?? Jackson suggested to Charley Rosen of Today?s Fastbreak in an interview published Friday. ?It wouldn?t be long before players will get reasonably comfortable shooting from out there. And having a 4-point line would certainly serve to enable teams to catch up in what are now blowout games.?
?The three-point shot has had a dramatic effect on the game,? Jackson says. ?It began with the old American Basketball Association with their striped ball and emphasis on backcourt play. Nowadays, you have to come out and guard the long-range shooters, which now includes stretch 4s. What this does is open up driving lanes. So most offenses come down to high screen fades, drives and kick-out passes, and guys getting fouled when they attack the basket. Even so, the game is still about ball penetration.?

A 4-point line wouldn?t likely help his Knicks as they finished 20th in the league in 3-point percentage last season.

I think it's time for the 4pt shot. I remember one season in a game when D'Antoni was coaching when they jacked up 30+ 3s in a game and people were screaming that was too many 3s. Now nobody blinks when a team shoots that many, time to at least start experimenting with the 4pt shot in D-League and training camp.

One of the bad things about that is the hard work of the defense could be negated while the offense might get lucky possibly most of the time (I say most, because Curry would shoot those shots regardless).

“Why not have a 4-point line about 35 feet out?” Jackson suggested to Charley Rosen of Today’s Fastbreak in an interview published Friday. “It wouldn’t be long before players will get reasonably comfortable shooting from out there. And having a 4-point line would certainly serve to enable teams to catch up in what are now blowout games.”

Phil Phil Phil...seriously how ridiculous. Typical loser mentality reasoning he gave. The whole point of the game is to make shots that are the highest %, not the highest degree of difficulty

It's not about the takes and more so the makes. Let's look at the metrics...

Over half the league takes 25 3s or less and half the league shoots 35% or less of the average 85fga per team over half the league makes less than 9 3s/gm

http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/team/_/stat/offense-per-game/sort/avgFieldGoalsAttempted

http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/team/_/stat/offense-per-game/sort/avgThreePointFieldGoalsAttempted

http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/team/_/stat/offense-per-game/sort/threePointFieldGoalPct

There is no justification to add a 4pt shot other than the ridiculous reason he gave in efforts to easily get back into a game(which is a losers mentality)...the fact he specifically said BLOWOUT is a tragedy. If over half the league was taking 30 3s/gm and shooting north of 40% maybe you could argue it's too easy for today's players to shoot this shot. OTOH 35ft shot would also suggest it's a flat line shot that doesn't take full advantage of the court only 94ft lengthwise what about width Phil?

I recall when Phil Jackson would let Jordan and Pippin play over 40 minute a night, in the final 5 minute of those game we would watch Jordan and Pippin shooting from the perimeter taking lots of 3 ball shots from being exhausted.

Assistant coach Gentry had the best idea on shooting 3 ball shots in Phoenix and GS.
Gentry forced his players to run run run to score in seven seconds or less in practice, and in the game. When the majority of Gentry players got tired he would allow them to shoot the 3 ball shot in the 2nd half of the game .. Yeah! Curry took it to the next level
