Flip Saunders Fired

Flip Saunders is out of a job today, but don't be surprised if the toppled Timberwolves coach is back on an NBA sideline soon. Like, perhaps, the one at the Garden down the road.
Saunders, who was fired by the Timberwolves yesterday after their 25-26 start, could emerge as a candidate for the Knicks' job in the future, sources said. Team president Isiah Thomas is said to be fond of Saunders, who for the moment will be reassigned within the Minnesota organization, the Timberwolves said.

Saunders coached Minnesota to the Western Conference finals last year, but the Timberwolves have been a major disappointment this season. Vice president Kevin McHale will take over for Saunders - a move Thomas opted not to make himself following Lenny Wilkens' departure.

Saunders, whose 10-year T-Wolves' tenure was the second-longest in the NBA (after Jerry Sloan's 18 with the Jazz), represents another highly experienced option for the Knicks besides Phil Jackson.
