I've been following James his rookie year, he played in Northeastern with Jose Juan Barea, current PG for the Dallas Mavericks. James was amazing and one of the most athletic big men I ever seen before.
Here are his stats from his freshman and rookie years @ Northeastern.
2004-05
24 minutes
10.6 ppg
7.6 rpg
1 spg
5.4 bpg <~ not a typo
63% FG
71% FT
33% 3pt
2005-06
27 minutes
12.4 ppg
8 rpg
1.5 apg
.8 spg
6.5 bpg <~ NOT A TYPO again
52% FG
45% 3pt
73% FT
He then transfered from Northeastern to Duquesne
He's averaging 14 ppg 7.2 rebounds in 24 minutes on 58% FG and 73% FT while shooting 31% from 3pt. He's only averaging 4.4 blocks.
Article on him
I'm not concerned about his strength, anyone can gain strength with the proper training and with NBA trainers this shouldn't be a problem.
Anyway, we need this guy, he's the Anti Curry.
As of 2/9/06...
Leading the NCAA in 6.4 bpg and 134 total blocks.
On pace to match Adonal Foyle's NCAA record of 6.4 bpg set in 1997.
Last year as a freshman he was 2nd in the nation at 5.4 bpg.
Shooting .452% this year...from behind the arc, 14-31.
Playing in just his fourth year of organized basketball.
I just saw the guy play on TV a while ago against Virginia Commonwealth I'll never forget it
He got a triple double, first of the year (had two last year):
26 points, 10 rebounds, 10 blocks, 3 assists, 1 steal.
10-13 FG, 1-3 3PT, 5-7 FT (barely missed the last two)
Best of all: 1 turnover and 2 personal fouls. He has countless numbers of games like this and goes unnoticed.
Let me say this, and I'm calling it:
Shawn James will be the steal of whatever draft he's in.
He has the best knack for blocked shots I've seen in a long while.
Has terrific quickness in his vertical leap, allowing him to wait longer.
His wingspan is somewhere in the 7'1"/7'2" range.
He usually keeps the ball in play when he blocks a la Bill Russell.
Not only that but...he displayed a excellent shooting form, some nice moves and good awareness under the basket on offense, and he made a terrific backdoor pass. I simply cannot believe how good he is for someone who's had only four years of organized basketball. Unreal
"I just decided that I wanted to get paid for playing basketball," James says. "I wanted to be able to provide for my family when [Ebony] is six and when my younger sister Teceeta is a senior in high school."
He's hungry.
