Was he afraid of Oscar de la hoya? I do not understand why he would retire. Floyd already beat Oscar without breaking a sweat and he is giving up a very large payday.

You think so? I actually believe that fight could have gone either way. But I personally had Dela Hoya winning via split, and not Mayweather. I think even Mayweather, judging from his body language after the 12th round, that a defeat was a possibility. Heck even Mayweather Sr. believed dela Hoya won. Now that Mayweather's retired, I now know why he even agreed to that fight with the Big Show at Wrestlemania. That fight was horrendous. LOL!

Mayweather aint sugar ray but anyone would have to admit that in his weight class he is the best pound for pound puncher in the world. He's one of the fastest ive seen in a while and even though i dont like him because he talks shyt he always backs it up. And question to anyone that watches alot of boxing...why arent Heavy weight fights a big event anymore?...is Wladimir Klitchko really the only person worth watching on HBO?

Light weights and welterweights get more attention nowadays. The good ol' days of the heavyweights are gone years ago. Nowadays people seem to favor the quicker punching fights, and there just isn't enough rivarly going on the heavyweights anymore. Pacquiao is the new No.1 pound-for-pound right now. I'll be looking forward to his fight with Edwin Valero and Ricky Hatton.

isnt Panquio in a different weight class than Mayweather?

Yes Mayweather is on a heavier weight class. But when they rate "pound-for-pound", they rate all boxers not in accordance with weight. Mayweather used to be no.1 with Pacquiao as no.2, but now Pacman's no.1 since Mayweather's retired. But with Pacquiao's recent claiming of his 4th title in 4 weight classes (a rarity and a big accomplishment) , he probably could have gotten that rank away from Mayweather had he still been active also. Pacquiao is thinking of moving up to 140lbs to fight Hatton next year. I have a feeling the Pacman will be retiring by late 2009.

There's this rumor that came out in 2007 of him fighting Dela Hoya in the future. I think it's gibberish. LOL! But if it really does push thru, WOW!

Tony Magorito thinks he could beat Cotto in 4. Good Tony just think that way. This guy is the biggest hypocrite mofo ever. What happened to "I don't like to talk trash". If you are so big, why don't you say this to Cotto HIMSELF bigshot? So he's going in 4 but if he "runs" it's 8. Tell that to him during the fight week press-conference, I really hope that you do. The fact of the matter is that you talk trash all the time but just like the other idiots that always face Cotto, can't keep their mouths closed and go over the top hyping themselves. So if you are so big Tony, I hope that you have the ****ing balls to say that right to him or maybe your punk ass will get another one of these.....:

"During that tour, Margarito had some choice words for his opponent. Margarito mentioned that he hoped that Cotto prepared himself extra well for their fight in which in turn Cotto responded that he did not need to prepare himself any more for Margarito that he had done for previous opponents. "Maybe it was an error in my part to tell Cotto to prepare extra hard for our fight. The reason I said that was for him to bring a good fight into the ring and for there not to be any excuses after the fight in case he loses and he says that he didn't have a good camp. Maybe I was wrong in making that comment. He says that he always gets well prepared. I am glad that he comes in at one hundred percent so that we can give the fans a great fight."

Why is that Tony, why was that a mistake? You seem to be the type of person who talks trash and because nobody is around, think you're big. But I bet you didn't expect Cotto to turn to you and respond back. So do it bigshot, I hope you show some balls and say it to him directly. The kind of person that you are, I expect you won't because that's what you envision yourself as: some sort of bully with your smiling when you get hit. Well, you know what they say about bullies...

If anyone is there in PR and can get to a Cotto workout, it'd be good if this could be passed along to them, let them know what this clown is saying like all the other previous Cotto opponents who can't help themselves. It would be great to see Miguel when the press-conference is going to end, to just come out and say "Wait a sec, I would like to hear more from Antonio about KOing me in 4 or running and doing it in 8". See Tony's reaction, he probably thinks they have a spy at their gym

What the hell happened to your man Cotto??? No one would believe me now, but I knew Margarito was gonna pull off a surprising win. What a way to get a first loss - via TKO after he got saved by his corner. Goodbye Cotto vs Dela Hoya. Hello Pacquiao vs Dela Hoya. Funny how all of a sudden everyone now keeps talking about Margarito, and forgetting about Cotto all so quickly.

And just to respond to the Hatton vs Pacquiao match-up next year, it will be a tough fight no doubt. But if you watched how Pacquiao pummeled Diaz, who has a similar style as Hatton, you'd know who's the more complete fighter. In Hatton vs Mayweather, Hatton went like a bull taking shot after shot just to get close - very very similar to how Diaz fights. Now I'm not making a comparison of Pacquiao and Mayweather. But as long as Pacquiao fights like he did against Diaz, with that kind of speed, he can take Hatton.

Didn't you watch the fight homo?

Cotto dominated the first for the first 7 rounds.

Out boxing him, landing bigger and more accurate shots, slipping away, trading with Margarito and landing more punches.

Cotto is the one of the most fearless guys in the world to start throwing power punches and exchanging with Margarito in the 2nd round.
Everyone else was scared of Margarito and Cotto took the challenge and stepped up to the plate in the fight.
Credit is given to Cotto for that.

A vicious left hook twists Margarito's head, Exorcist style.
Cotto was landing the most devasting shots we've seen in some recent time.
Any other boxer would of been TKO's in the 2nd trading shots with Cotto or Margarito like that.
Cotto also is gets credited award for the amount of punches and accuracy he threw in the first half of the fight.

Margarito's body shots got to Cotto whenever they planted their feet.
Cotto was crushing Margarito the majority of the fight with neck snapping uppercuts, strong jabs, devastating right hands that made Tony dance and vicious left hooks.
Cotto had three punch combos that rattled Margarito.

Cotto's downfall was fighting on the ropes too much. He was trying to pick his spots on the ropes and that made him an easier target for Tony.

Cotto's defense was actually as GOOD as we could see from any boxer. Tony was hitting at 20% and Cotto was countering non-stop.

What went wrong was the fact that Miguel changed up his game plan in the 8th round and so on.

Cotto showed a lot of heart in the 6th and fought back after having his nose bloody.

Cotto was still throwing 3-5 punch combinations in the later rounds and had Margarito's left eye closed up.

Stats for Cotto

Total Punches
Landed: 280 Thrown: 655
Pct: 43%

Jabs: 101/260 39%
Power Punches: 179/395 45%

Stats for Magarito
Landed: 267/987
Pct: 27%

Jabs: 30/340 9%
Power Punches: 247/647 37%

Cotto was superior in everything, but the rate of power punches Margarito was delivering impacted the tempo of the fight.

Cotto won round 1, 2, 3,4,5,6,8,9.
Margarito won round 7, 10, 11.

Margarito applied relentless pressure while Cotto landed the cleaner blows.

Cotto just gave up and broke down...I thought my eyes would never witness anything like that. He was doing fine before...in the 11th he just did a Kermit Cintron and submitted.

I give props to Margarito, he has a steel head and devastating power that breaks his opponent down.

Margarito was getting schooled, but his chin is unbreakable. Like I said earlier, no one could take punches from Cotto like that; but Margarito was walking through the fire and eating his punches.

Margarito's only defense was his chin.

Aboslutely gutted. Cotto dominated first 6 rounds, after that Margarito size came to the front. Miguel done well, but respect to Tony.

I gained a ton ammount of respect for Margarito.
Miguel should take a vacation.
I'm sure Margarito is willing to fight a rematch in New York.
Cotto doesn't need to change much of strategy.
Conditioning needs improvement so he could of repeated what he did round 1-6.
You beat Margarito by doing what Cotto did rounds 1-6.

Today 1 or 2 losses doesn't really mean anything in these days and times as opposed to back in the days of boxing, just like in football records really don't mean sh*t anymore. Today you have WAY more superior athletes in boxing that if you fight the best your bound to lose 1 or 2, back then you didn't have nearly the number of fighters or competition as it is today.

Who cares... All the great champions in boxing history have losses on their records except for one man. And if you dont have a loss on your record then its most likely because you didnt face the best in your era. Cotto lost and now the division is wide open again. Cotto will work his way up to a Margarito fight and he will avenge this loss. Cotto is the best of this generation and he will show it.

Los mejicanos entrenan en un territorio mas alto y se les hace mas facil tener resistencia , the air that mexicans breathe is thinner than ours , that mother****er will not get tired or hurt never

What's depressed me is that Cotto Out boxed him and was punishing Margo, and Margo says Cotto hits hard but did not hurt him.

Cotto really did make Margarito look rather second rate and hackish, but, Margarito's persistence and dogged determination and his conditioning is what won him the fight. Cotto looked brilliant for the first half and then some but his conditioning left something to be desired. Whether he couldn't breathe because of his busted up nose or not, I don't know.

Margarito just didn't and wouldn't stop coming and he took a hell of a beating. That guys chin is pretty amazing. I'm not sure I'd want to be him in twenty years though. One thing I was surprised at was that Cotto didn't do much body work. It would have slowed Marg down for the latter half of the fight.

Margarito just wanted this fight more than Cotto.

Thats really what separates everything.

Cotto was winning the fight but didn't want to continue simply. He gave up his gameplan and the fight.

Cotto was naily hard accurate shots to Margarito and dominated the first half of the fight; I think it was really something MENTAL for Miguel when he saw he couldn't hurt Margarito like he has done in the past.
That may have got to him and made him lose hope in the fight.

I just wished Cotto didn't hang around the ropes so much...thats where Margarito landed his best shots.
Cotto got "winded out" as opposed to "knocked out."

As for you lance, you're a primal Manny Pacq dickrider, the only relevant boxer from the Philliputos.
You know nothing about this sport, you don't box, and you don't even follow other boxers.
You hide and lurk this site 24/7 and only come in to say something ignorant.
Is your purpose on this site is to get on my bad side? We know you can't serve any knowledge on hoops or the boxing ring. Sucks for you really.

Manny Pacq has no chance really against BIGGER fighters like De La Hoya and Hatton.
Margarito, Hatton, and De La Hoya all called out Manny Wacquiao. Now its up to his shrimp ass to put on some weight and fact power and skill level he never faced before in his career.
3 Automatic losses + retirement, actually 4 if Mayweather comes out of retirement.
Bigger usually wins unless your Roy Jones against a soft bitch like Ruiz.
Pac has no chance against A level bigger fighters. Stop riding his nuts and accept reality.

In head to head championship fights Puerto Rico is ahead of Mexico 37 to 25.

Also, the first championship fight between a Puerto Rican and a Mexican was won by Puerto Rico's Sixto Escobar by 9th round Knockout.

Just thought I'd share that with everyone.

Ight, I'm just playing around. Its a great feeling to rival with an elite boxing country and come from another elite boxing country, no harsh feelings here. Obviously our fans are very passionate and loud in volume, but what other way would you want? Mexico won, Margarito has done his work against the Boricuas. (hopefully Danny Santos makes a comeback here lol)

I was really impressed with Tony's ability to take punches and continue marching forward on the attack.
You can't beat a man with such will and determination, it seemed like Margarito didn't care if he won rounds or not, he just wanted Cotto's blood.

I mean we all Cotto did his thing and dominated the first 7 rounds, but beyond that point he got slopped and Margarito capitalized on Cotto's mistakes, period.
Even error Cotto did, Margarito took advantage and capitalized to his advantage.

He deserved the knockout, props.

btw, If you watched any sparring videos available, we saw Cotto go to the ropes and work off of it with these large guys coming on top of him and with Margo's, you saw him push back the smaller sparring partners right to the ropes just like he did to Cotto. They even said Margarito had big screen TV's in the gym showing non-stop Cotto fights so he was seeing him every second of his time in that gym. By watching so much tape and coverage of Cotto, Marg took away his body punching and he said he would make Cotto go backward and that's exactly what happened 99% of the time. He did exactly what Margarito was hoping he would do, back into corners where he would trap him and accumulate body punches and hang on the ropes instead of firing and slipping off the ropes and trying to circle or at least attempt to work the middle of the ring. The habit of Cotto resting on the ropes killed him since Margo would fire the damn uppercuts as always up that split guard and abandoning firing jabs, at least trying to double or triple some jabs, keep the guy on the defensive in some manner. Small ring didn't help either.

I just wonder who's going to take it to Margarito next because I see Antonio beating Williams in a rematch, and other than that hopefully we'll see a rematch in MSG between Cotto and Margarito.

I will guarantee you that Cotto will train harder than he ever has before for each and every fight left in his future. Pain is weakness leaving the body; when Cotto rebuilds, its gonna be a scary sight.

Peace.

Metros opinions are on point...both fighters aint my favorites....i like cotto but hes not one of my favorites. I respect him for being a good person and hes very classy unlike the average american fighter.

Cotto has nothing to be ashamed of...hes a true warrior with alotta heart. That fukkin margarito had his bones replaced with steel or sumthin...cotto was landin some powerful punches that did nothin. I thought cotto was clearly the better more skilled boxer and his punches were cleaner and harder. The problem is margarito (despite being somewhat uncoordinated) has a brick jaw and is in excellent shape...he can keep throwing punches all night long.

I think it was one of the punches that cotto got hit with at the end of the 10th that led to him gettin knocked out. I could see him winning a rematch...the key is constantly moving and not staying in one spot.

In the 2nd round, Cotto got cut in nose and starting bleeding.
He spent the rest of the fight fighting to breathe through his nose, and eventually in the 11th he couldn't breathe no more and took a knee.

Yeh, Margarito is a monster though.

Cotto spent too much time ****ing around the ropes, he should of attacked the body and the fight would of been his.

Cotto's best weapon is his body punches and didn't even use it.

Clottley: Margarito's Punches easy to see coming, Cotto spent too much time on the ropes.
