No, you understand the bible by sticking to the theme of the book.
The bible says the earth shall stand to time indefinate. If that's true, then the sun and moon and stars have to also stand in the state they are in, because anything less will mean the destruction for earth.
If the sun goes black, and not give off it's radiation, the earth is ruined. And how could the moon turn to literal blood and still reflect the suns light at night?
So clearly these things happening would be of a symbolic reference, though they have a literal meaning.
