We're about 12 percent through the season and still experiencing serious fluctuation in the rankings, as well as in the offensive and defensive ratings. Obviously, there have been some isolated surprises so far, but there's also an interesting trend going on.
To add another informative factoid to this feature, we checked on how the two conferences were doing against each other. And the result was eye-opening to say the least. There have been 46 games between the East and West so far, and the East has won 31 of them. That's a winning percentage of .674.
Of course, the East's dominance is aided by the fact that no team has played more games against the other conference than the Oklahoma City Thunder, and OKC is 0-7 against the East. Still, take them out and the East is still 24-15 against the West. In fact, the only East team that currently has a losing record against the West is New Jersey (0-2).
Last season, the West was 258-192 (.573) against the East, and they've still got plenty of time to turn it around this year. Stay tuned.

T.I. Team of the Week: Cleveland (3-0)

Tracey Lee Team of the Week: Oklahoma City (0-4)

High jumps of the week: Denver (+6), Houston (+5), Cleveland (+4), Detroit (+4)

Free falls of the week: Atlanta (-8), Utah (-8), Indiana (-3), New Orleans (-3)

East vs. West: East leads 31-15 in inter-conference games.

Off: Points scored per 100 possessions (League Rank)

Def: Points allowed per 100 possessions (League Rank)

The league averages through Sunday are 90.4 possessions (per team) per game and 106.3 points scored per 100 possessions.

As always, the stats don't determine the rankings, but they help us evaluate each team and provide a picture of where they stand on both sides of the ball.

good thread....cleveland at #1? They might be the best team, its tough to say. That series with the celtics last year could have went either way. If gibson had played, cavs might be the champs right now.

Of course practically every sportwriter gets off at the mere mention of LeBron...

Guy can't shoot for shit. He just won the genetic lottery. Just like Amare. Such athleticism that they can do whatever they want. Lebron could literally average 40ppg if he wanted to drive that much. Easy. Guy shoots like 10 FTs a game, and is so strong that they usually come from And1s.

c/s

lebron is not a good 3 point shooter and he has no post game

i think its his size and athleticism that makes him one of the best players, definitily not his talent. Hes a real good passer though...offensively, kobe has a lot more moves then lebron.

Imagine lebron with a better 3pt shot and a post game?

That's a pretty fair ranking. If we can beat the Celtics tomorrow:crossfingers: we should go up a couple notches.

Right now, Lebron's game is almost completely predicated on his speed/athleticism. Although his passing and ballhandling is very good for a dude his size. But his 3 pt shot and post game will come, he's only 23-24. MJ wasn't a great 3 pt shooter when he came into the league, but as he got older he became one of the top 3 pt shooters in the game. His shot is looking pretty good so far this season.

MJ couldn't shoot at all when he came into the league. He was an athletic slasher. More of a Dwade than a Lebron. More of the finesse style than the overpowering type of drives.

Its just up to LeBron if he wants to develop the other facets of his game...Or if he wants to live the life of luxury and coast through a good career...Just one that wasn't what it could have been had he worked on his weaknesses night in and night out.

^ LeBrons said time and again he wants to be the best ever so he works his ass off every practice offseason etc imaginable...his shot will come he's 23 years old and he already cant be stopped imagine with a shot and its looking pretty good so far its those first 2 games that hurt his stats but watching him he gets whatever he wants whenever he wants....and how bout that near-foul line dunk sick...

Its not fair. Why couldn't I have been that naturally athletic and tall?!

That's one of the things wrong with today's NBA. Right out of the high school, these players get 90 million shoe contracts and 1-2 million dollar salaries before they've done anything. It makes it so players don't need to work on their game, they lose that hunger that players in past generations had.

Yep. I'm really suprised we don't have more players with serious drug problems...I mean, you take kids from the inner city who have never had anything their entire lives and give them millions up front. I'd expect more Len Biases and Vin Bakers...

Spursfan4life... your comments?

We're ahead of Dallas and Philly, who beat us this season, so that's a leap of faith =)
