All-White Basketball League....SMFH

The One and Only
I do not approve of this; however, this does not surprise me.

They have African American, Indian (from the Asian continent not Native American), Asian only leagues all over the US.

And not just in basketball, but in other sports too like soccer and volleyball.

This has been going on for a while.

This is not right. There should not be race based sports organizations.

This is stupid but i dont think its illegal, aren't there all black colleges?

To the best of my knowledge, there are one-race leagues (indian, chinese, etc.) but most are private. This all-white league is going to go public and try to generate money by promoting segregation.

I'm not too sure on black colleges. But weren't they formed because of segregation?? No african americans allowed in major colleges(back in the day) so they had to start their own???

Bingo. Separate but Equal remember. Blacks weren't even allowed at "white" universities until the early sixties. That is why the "all-black" Texas team that beat Kentucky's "all-white" sqaud changed everything. "Traditional" black colleges have plenty of white students and every other race these days.

from the augusta chronicle:

A new professional basketball league boasting rosters made up exclusively of white Americans has its eyes set on Augusta, but the team isn't receiving a warm welcome.
The All-American Basketball Alliance announced in a news release Sunday evening that it intends to start its inaugural season in June and hopes Augusta will be one of 12 cities with a team.
"Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league," the statement said.
Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver, who has publicly expressed his support for minor league teams in the past, said he would not do the same for this team.
"As a sports enthusiast, I have always supported bringing more sporting activities to Augusta," he said. "However, in this instance I could not support in good conscience bringing in a team that did not fit with the spirit of inclusiveness that I, along with many others, have worked so hard to foster in our city."
Clint Bryant, athletic director at Augusta State University, laughed when he heard the news.
"It's so absurd, it's funny, but it gives you an idea of the sickness of our society" he said. "It shows you what lengths people will go to just to be mean-spirited. I think at any basketball level, no matter if it's all black, all white, all Hispanic, all Asian or anyone else, the players should just be a basketball team."
Don "Moose" Lewis, the commissioner of the AABA, said the reasoning behind the league's roster restrictions is not racism.
"There's nothing hatred about what we're doing," he said. "I don't hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here's a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like."
Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of "street-ball" played by "people of color." He pointed out recent incidents in the NBA, including Gilbert Arenas' indefinite suspension after bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room, as examples of fans' dissatisfaction with the way current professional sports are run.
"Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?" he said. "That's the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction."
The Atlanta-based league, which will operate as a single-entity owning all of its teams, is looking for local contacts to pay $10,000 to become a "licensee" in one of 12 cities throughout the Southeast. Lewis said he has already received threats from people opposed to the roster restrictions and several cities have told him to stay out of town. Lewis said he has yet to hear from any one in Augusta. "We need a local person ingrained into the community to make this successful," he said.
Lewis said he expects to eventually find support in every town with a team.
"People will come out and support a product they can identify with. I'm the spoken minority right now, but if people will give us a chance, it'll work... The white game of basketball, which is essentially a fundamental game, works." Lewis said he wasn't sure where the team will play.
Augusta has had problems with minor league basketball teams in the past, but the issues never centered around race. The Augusta Drive lasted less than a month before folding in 1995, citing financial reasons. The Augusta Groove made it through a full, 20-game schedule in 2009, but accusations from players and local businesses that the team wasn't paying its bills surrounded the team during the second half of the season. The team later shut down in the offseason.

I can't believe that shit like this can even be considered in this day and age. SMH.

Thoughts on this???

Guess they wear all white sheets? As a bad white player who's career ended 40 plus years ago, on the bench in Division 1, this is crap. Western Texas, (UTEP)repeating itself all over again nearly 50 years later?
Now, would our President be allowed to play? Tiger Woods? Do we need DNA testing? I hope this racism that this newspaper should be boycotted for even printing something like this., but lets all report this thread to be locked and dropped.

Doing my years in the military, having the pleasure as a top deadeye, as seen in my Avatar, only for occasional fun now, a couple of 8 mm near 100 yd hits on what my friends call "Moose" (disclaimer: If we did not thin the herd here, they would starve to death for their are too many "Moose" per acre.)
The comments about Arenas are BS for any legitimate reason, it is true that some individuals that make millions, gain fame, do get fearful for their lives with all the nut cases that approach them constantly. Many hollywood and pro athletes fear, for themselves, their families. I do not believe that Gilbert would ever shot anyone, but he screwed up. We all bleed red blood, all cry water. I am satisfied with the NBA, NCAA, D-League, High School and even Grammar school hoops (when I see a up and comer) and street ball, before I would observe this (watch some old Hitler movies first). So Don is wrong. I got to google this dude. This league will never it get a player, a coach or anyone to give them one dollar. They would never be on any T.V., any radio station, though maybe CB broadcast would be best. Nor will any arena, connected to a corporation or ownership want anything be related to this in any form, it's a poor attempt at racism and we know it.

Why today? The press release is so obviously tied to Martin Luther King Holiday yesterday, poorly planned and obvious. Only this city would run the story.

Lets all ask for this post just to be removed, everyone on this board never goes this low and we are fans of the Knicks and hoops, not this crap.

Under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, this is illegal. The CRA of 1964 basically gave teeth to the previous, weak CRAs of the 1950s, finally allowing the federal government, through its courts, the power necessary to pulverize Jim Crow.

I studied civil rights law and wrote a big, 40 page paper on this act. It was basically created because Blacks were, for over a hundred years, after the abolition of slavery and the reconstruction era, still being barred from restaurants, hotels, certain colleges and universities, and other places where racist Whites felt they had exclusive right of access.

Title II of the CRA says businesses open to patronage from the public can't discriminate based on race, amongst other traits. I think a court would easily interpret this, a racist basketball league, as meeting title II's definition. The only exemption to this, by the way, is a private club engaging in discriminatory practices.

Title VII, more importantly, says that you can't use discriminatory employment practices, unless the trait you discriminate against, i.e. someone who can't walk being rejected by the fire dept., would otherwise prevent an organization from doing its job effectively. Playing basketball effectively is obviously not something that's determined by race.

If this guy can even get anyone to blow their money investing on this stupid idea, which is doubtful, they would likely just get closed down, under an avalanche of lawsuits, quickly.

The guy's probably just looking for publicity.

EDIT: It might work, if the players play for free. In that case, this might not constitute employment discrimination.

Why are they even called black colleges anymore (if they are)?

Anyway, this is dumb, and their explanation for making this is even more dumb.Pathetic.

You are right Sly, most of them are private; however, they still receive money and sponsorship from different companies.

In the end it is all wrong, which I am sure you agree with.

To those who claim "only in America" should understand that this does not only happen in America.

LMAO i love how they say that white people love to play fundamentals. Not true...there are many good white American NBA players. To get to the next level you have to have a little more than just fundamentals....Jason Williams, Birdman, Kaman have a lot of athletics/instinct. Even David Lee won the Dunk Contest in the McDonald All American in high school didn't he.

That's why I say "traditional" black colleges. Even though they aren't 100% "black" anymore, they were all black when they were chartered because of segragation. Kind of like Notre Dame is a "catholic" school, even though you don't necessarily have to be catholic to attend. Hope that helped...

Well that's that old racist thing: whites play with IQ and fundamentals while blacks play with athleticism. Both are broad generalities and not necessarily true, but continue to persist today. The same reason blacks weren't QB's in the NFL until recently. Good athelete, but not smart enough to play QB. It works both ways. How many white corners or running backs do you see in the NFL??? I think its all wrong, but it is hard to overturn ingrained stereotypes, even in athletics. I grew up in a small town, and the white kid who lived behind me was the fastest kid in town, and my other white neighbor was the best point guard in town(at our age level). Those stereotypes are crap....
