April 30, 2004 -- Don Chaney could resurface on the shores of Lake Erie. With the Cavaliers firing assistant coach Bob Donewald yesterday, Chaney has emerged as a top candidate, with the chance of being reunited with his former Celtic buddy Paul Silas.
The search process hasn't begun, a source said, but Silas is looking for a veteran assistant. Silas told The Post on Feb. 22 that he would consider hiring the former Knick head coach in the summer, saying he'd be a good influence on LeBron James. Donewald did most of his work with James. "It's certainly a possibility," Silas told The Post before LeBron's Garden debut. "[Don's] a special man."

Chaney, unceremoniously fired on Jan. 15, was last seen being escorted out of the Garden, holding his briefcase. Chaney is still on the Knick payroll through next season. He's been holed up in Houston for months. He spent the first couple of a weeks living at his home in Connecticut, but needed to get away from the furor and has since alternated between his homes in Houston and Galveston.

What are the Cavaliers smoking? ????
