What make a great NBA coach?

Should the coach make the player fit into his playing system?

Or

Create a system that fit the playing style of the player?

creating a style that fits the unit of players he has

Look at Pat Riley, It was "Showtime" with The Lakers, It was the "Return of The Bad Boys" with our Knicks and it was little bit of Both with "The Heat" and all 3 Teams were Powerhouses!!!!!!

Even Phil Jackson modifies the Triangle Offense to fit his players

Greg Popovich is a coach who's is known to be defensive minded, but he has coached different types of teams who have all been successful. Duncan's early years of winning it was "The Twin Towers" with he and Robinson and the later championship runs relied heavily on the play of the backcourt players like Parker, Manu, and Finley to help Duncan.

Coaches who have won in the league but never learned to adapt their system to the type of playes they have are

Paul Westphal
Don Nelson
Scott Skiles
Larry Brown

Of that group Larry is the only championship coach. But Larry is also the only coach not to be able to coach an NBA Team to Olympic Gold and that was in large part he did not know how to adapt to the group he had!

To win a coach needs talent, just not specific types of talent!

Good post NNY, To add, a post that brings out the absolute best in his players, and gets them to play with all their heart and leave it all on the court.

See: Rick Adelman.
