The Nets are close to acquiring multiple first round picks that will be used in a potential trade for Carmelo Anthony, two people familiar with the situation told CBSSports.com.

New Jersey has agreed in principle to a three-team trade where the Nets receive a first round pick in 2012 from the Rockets that will be lottery protected according to the Houston Chronicle and an additional first round pick from the Lakers in 2011.

Houston would acquire Terrence Williams, while Joe Smith would be sent to the Lakers and Sasha Vujacic would go to the Nets.

The deal can't be finalized until Wednesday when Smith becomes trade-eligible.

New Jersey already owns Golden State's 2011 lottery protected first rounder, which would also be included in a trade for Anthony along with the two picks acquired in this trade and one of their own over the next two seasons.

Derrick Favors and Troy Murphy would also be included in any trade the Nets may complete for Anthony.

The Nets have received assurances from several people from Anthony's camp that he would sign an extension with the club.

The framework of the three-team trade came together on Tuesday, just two days after word leaked that Anthony would only sign an extension with New York.

According to a Yahoo! report, the Nets are confident owner Mikhail Prokhorov and Avery Johnson can convince Anthony to commit to the Nets in the long-term.

Interesting. Not convinced by the story or the notion that Melo would sign with the 6-18 Nets but hey, a story is a story.

TWO THINGS HERE:

NETS are definitely the favorite in DENVER's eye. Nets have plenty of assets DEN is looking for.

NETS also block the KNicks, b/c there were reports NY was looking to re-acquire the #1 pick the traded to HOU last year. NOPE. The Nets swooped in and swiped that pick away.

STILL.... It's all about Carmelo Anthony.

The Nets could have every first round pick in the next 2 drafts... Doesn't do much to sway 'Melo right? If Carmelo refuses to sign an extension, NO WAY the Nets push fwd with this deal.

SURE, they might go as far to make trade anyway and take the risk, mainly to screw the KNicks and hope they can convince 'Melo to stay....

BUT, if Carmelo Anthony truly wants to play with Ama're, and play on the MSG stage, and if his heart is set on the Knicks.... It will happen in July. AND, if Carmelo is smart... He waits and signs as a free agent. He has to know that his best chance to wina title... And isn't this about championships?

If Carmelo wants to join the Knicks and do more than just compete.... The Knicks must be able to keep their young players. Otherwise, the Knicks are good but not great.

SO, we will soon see:

1) How badly does 'Melo want to be a Knick.
2) How badly does he want to win a title.

If it is all on Mello, then the Nets are just wasting their time. They can only get Mello by selling him one of the NY bridges. The Russan will probably try the same tricks he used on Lebron... try to convience him he can make more money outside of his Basketball profession. I doubt Mello is interested in other endevors atm. His focus is on B-Ball and he wants to win games and the bling. The Nets dont have what it takes. He'll just be frustrated playing in Newark with a team that is in a rebuilding mode. The Nets mighta had a real chance if they was in BK...but they are in Newark for the next 2 years, anything can happen to mess up his long term plans.
