Doc preaches patience with Knicks' Stoudemire

The Knicks would be wise to have a conservative approach with ailing Amar?e Stoudemire and have him ready to go for the playoffs instead of rushing him back sooner, according to one medical expert on bulging disks.
Stoudemire sought a second opinion Tuesday night in Miami after the Knicks announced Monday he would undergo non-surgical treatment and be out ?indefinitely.?? People familiar with the situation said having Stoudemire ready for Round 1, which begins at the end of April, is the club?s goal.
Dr. Wellington Hsu , a back specialist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago who specializes in sports medicine, told The Post a common procedure to treat bulging disks for pro athletes is an epidural steroid injection in addition to oral anti-inflammatory medication.

That treatment conceivably could get Stoudemire back on the court in as fast as 10 days, but Hsu said it would be unwise. According to Hsu, back-strengthening, rehab exercises to increase power in the core over a four-week period is the likeliest course to give Stoudemire a chance of not being prone to reinjuring it.

This from Alan Hahn's via Twitter....
  • #Knicks official statement on Amar'e Stoudemire: "Amar'e will return to New York from Miami, FL today after seeking a second opinion on a bulging disc of his lower back. Both doctors have agreed that he should undergo non-surgical treatment and rehabilitation, that will include an epidural. He is expected to be out for approximately 2-4 weeks."

He could get in one regular season game before the playoffs if all goes according to plan then.

^If that would be the plan I'd see him taking about 15-20 minutes in that game to just test the back and then rest up for the series.

All of that, however, is dependent upon JLIN, Melo and TC bringing this team into the playoffs at all. Bucks just won convincingly against the Hawks and pulled within 2. This next game with the Magic is huge.

Having to face these next 4 weeks without STAT is going to be a real test for these Knicks. MELO has to find his scoring touch. JLIN needs to limit turnovers and play SMART. TC needs to stay healthy above all else and continue to direct the defense.

We can live without offensive production from STAT as long as MELO steps up to his career game numbers and we get good things out of our young players. This is the time for guys like Jorts, Lin, Shumpert and Landry to step up and show what they are made of. It is encouraging to me that our 2nd unit outplayed our top unit for a long time and that depth will keep us competitive.

I mentioned the other day i also have a bad back ..mine buldges but also locks up. Locking up came about 8 years after onset, so Amar'e isn't there yet. Thank God with his $$ will never be where i am as he can afford the best care. But he does need to realize ICE is his best friend now. Remember Ewing icing his knees, well Amar'e after games would do his back wonders to ice it down as well.

No reason for him to panic - i think the staff is panicking more then Amar'e is. I see him back in about 2 weeks. We may miss the playoffs if he's out longer

Hopefully he'll have a speedy recovery and he'll be back within 2 weeks

I agree with both of you in that Amar'e needs to recover within two weeks. Having him playing out there with the rest of the guys while shaking off the rust will be enormous to our chances of making it deep in the playoffs. We don't want him to play his first game back in our very first playoff game.

Haha, the only event that would complete this topsy-turvy season is a lockout finals rematch between the Spurs and Knicks. Boy, getting back on those old bastards would be sweet as ****. :smokin:

I would rather take a chance and have 80% STAT in the playoffs,
than a 60% STAT in two weeks.
Wood Son should see how we do without him for the next couple weeks, if we can hold on and win games to make the playoffs, he should sit him out so he can rest as much as possible and come out strong when he does.

That would be great if he can come back for atleast 1 regular season game. But I want to know how he feels the day after. How his back reacts to in game action and how it responds the following days. I hope this is a lesson to the league and David Stern that this condensed season wasn't the greatest idea and they should have just went with like 50-55 games.

If it was 50-55 games we wouldn't make the playoffs IMO.

his knee isn't giving him problems, which is actually pretty encouraging considering those concerns. his back acting up a second time sucks though. In conclusion, this nickname sucks. work on it.

You can't be sure that the two aren't related, though. Either way it's going to be a tough decision; get him back a bit early and let him work off the cobwebs, or rest him fully and get him back in Game 1 with severe oxidation.

Yea I'm hoping he comes back in two weeks so he has time to shake the rust off like you said and because the team is gonna need him.

Hopefully Amare pulls through
