He had grown up in China and had played little structured basketball prior to earning a scholarship to West Virginia. He blossomed in his junior season at WVU, had a great Big East and NCAA tournament and moved up the draft lists with several impressive workouts.
To be fair, Hammond wasn’t the only GM high on Alexander. The Knicks nearly selected Alexander with the sixth overall pick, before settling on Italian Danilo Gallinari(notes). New Jersey GM Rod Thorn also considered moving up to take him, but certainly doesn’t regret that Brook Lopez(notes) dropped to his Nets with the 10th pick."

"D'Antoni sometimes acts as Gallinari's personal publicist, perhaps to compensate for convincing team president Donnie Walsh to select the Milan import at No. 6 in the 2008 draft over Clippers potential All-Star Eric Gordon, who played in college in Walsh's backyard at Indiana."
BUT.... IT MAKES YOU WONDER.... WOULD/WILL THE KNICKS TAKE A GAMBLE OF ALEXANDER IF HE IS A FREE AGENT? OBVIOUSLY ONLY IF IT WAS LOW RISK AND CHEAP, AND OBVIOUSLY IT WOULDN:T BE A MAJOR MOVE. BUT.... WORTH THE RISK?
At least Jordan Hill wont be the worst #8 pick in the last few years.
Still, with Chandler, Gallinari, Douglas, Hill, Darko (and perhaps Alexander)..... hmmmm.
Do you let Harrington walk and replace him with this guy? Of course, only if you sign Lebron James and David Lee!
