It's Official: Rubio will NOT be a Knick

...even if we traded up to #2....

Ricky Rubio is back in Sacramento today to finally have that workout the Kings have been wanting. The entire charade surrounding Rubio has become tiresome for just about everyone in the NBA and the Kings, who are the most obvious landing spot for the Spanish point guard, almost reached a boiling point when he bailed out on last weekend's workout session with a fever.

Then came Starberman's report today that the Knicks were somehow suddenly involved. Bogus? Well, somewhat.

The fact is, as Donnie Walsh said, the Knicks were interested in meeting Rubio earlier in the pre-draft process, but nothing materialized. When it sounded like his stock was starting to fall, Walsh thought it should be something the Knicks monitor and, perhaps, prepare themselves for in case Rubio somehow dropped all the way to the No. 8 pick. So the Knicks reached out to Rubio's camp to see if he would be interested in a meeting. They agreed.

And just as Kings GM Geoff Petrie was getting ready to pass -- reports were that Tyreke Evans or Jonny Flynn moved ahead on their draft board -- Rubio's people made sure the New York media got wind of the Knicks interest, regardless of how mild it was.

But the Knicks had already decided not to have this meeting afterall. "I don't need to, really," Walsh said. "I know he's a good player."
Walsh also knows two things:

1. He almost certainly won't last to the No. 8 pick and,
2. if they are able to trade-up, they wouldn't do it to select him. (Stephen Curry or Tyreke Evans are the more coveted prospects here).

So all within a day we have Rubio back in Sacramento ready, willing and able to participate in his first workout with an NBA team, basically 72 hours before the draft. It's possible he'll have another one, perhaps on his way to New York for the draft, with the Timberwolves, who pick at No. 6.

After Rubio's camp already shut out the Grizzlies at No. 2 and with Oklahoma City almost a lock to take James Harden with the third pick, it is clear that No. 4 is the best-case scenario for Ricky and he doesn't want to lose that number.

Just bloggin.

I like Evans and Curry but if Rubio is on the board and the Knicks pass up on 'em.......I will be tight.

But every other report indicates the Knicks are more interested in Curry than Evans.

Is this all a bluff? Who knows...

This is ridiculous. I'm tired of being disappointed with the Knicks.

Why do you even think rubio was ever coming to new york? i never bought into the 'rubio to newyork hype'. How often does a number 2 projeted fall to 8th pick?

I was being overly hopeful. What bothers me is the fact that we might trade up to get a inferior player.

This is all as reliable as the rest of the shit that's out there about the Knicks and Rubio.

He'd be great to have, certainly better than Curry, but did we ever really have a shot at him?

I doubt it.

I don't see the Knicks trading up. Why would anyone get rid of a top three pick unless they thought that this years draft was absolute shit. No one should be disappointed if we land Stephen Curry. Look him up, he's nice!

People, think like Walsh. He's obviously trying to hype up Curry and Evans to increase the chance that Rubio falls to us. In his mind, him saying that he would trade up for Curry/Evans might inspire the teams ahead of us to take them instead of Rubio. Not a bad idea, hopefully it will be successful. :crossfingers:

Wouldn't put much stock into this AT ALL. This is what GMs do...they covet a guy and try to lead others astray. Anyone ever read "Moneyball"? Good insight into how a GM's mind works, A's GM wanted to get Swisher, so he called the teams he thought might be interested in him and asked them about OTHER guys, then sounded "disappointed" when he found out "We might wind up having to take Swisher." GMs will call asking about one guy, not their target, to try and get the OTHER team to propose a trade for the guy they do want.

If Donnie wants Rubio, this is exactly what he should do. Plant the seeds "Oh he's not valuable, we don't want him." This lowers the cost of the #2 pick first of all. If Walsh was out saying "We need the #2 pick to get get Rubio," the price of the #2 pick immediately rockets up, it's simple economics. Then when GMs pass on Rubio because he is "overrated" it's "their" idea, even though Walsh may have planted the seads.

I do not want a 5 year "Project" PG on the Knicks which Ricky Rubio will become on the Knicks.
We do not have a decent SG to tandem with Rubio in the backcourt to show him the ropes (in his first two years in the NBA) like the Thunder and Kings have to offer him.

I also do not like all the excuses of injuries Rubio camp keep comming up with after entering the draft.
Welcome to the NBA! "where all the players play hurt with injuries".

If Rubio slip down to the 8th pick Donnie Walsh better let him slip to the 9th pick too. There are way to many PG's in this draft class that will out shine Rubio in the NBA (Maynor).

P.S. I am going to follow N.C. PF-Tyler Hansbrough NBA career to compare him with our injury-prone 2008 pet-player draft pick.
Plus what number he is drafted at in this weak draft compared to our 6th pick in a full draft.
Sports Writers & Announcers do not give Hansbrough the credit due to him for mastering N.C. Program in 4 years. I see another David Lee within Tyler Hansbrough while others see Duke poor product Laetiner.

The Best available player in this draft class from 1 to 5 does not have Rubio in there:

1) Griffin
2) Thabeet
3) Harden
4) Curry
5) Hill
6) Ty Lawson

Good post. It's odd that Rubio refuses to workout. I can't find a draft report on how he's doing. Not sure why everyone seems to think that Rubio is a sure thing that will immediately contribute. He's a project. I think everyone in the draft will be a project with the exception of Griffin and Curry. Johnny Flynn's stock is rising due to workouts.

But Kya, he has court vision, a high basketball IQ, he's been playing pro since he came out of the womb. He's only 15, 15. You know that means he's good: 15.

Like "Jennigs" said, dude is all hype, no jumper, no speed, limited vertical leap, turnover prone, flashy, worthless dribble, makes an occasional assist.

I hope he gets drafted at #1, so Walsh can't mess up another pick for us. I'm hoping, dearly, for Curry or Harden. Let's see if it pans out.

It's funny Jennings said that, considering as Ricky Rubio led his team in the league's playoffs, Brandon Jennings struggled see a minute.

Jennings was the 10th, 11th or 12th man on his team, Rubio a starter leading and helping his team through the Spanish league playoffs. Maybe Jennings should work on getting time in Spain before criticizing somebody that can. Jennings is just a jealous asshole.

Does it mean he's wrong? Not necessarily, but he should shut the **** up until he himself can get some time.

Jennings is gonna be one of those guys that you love to hate. His mouth is gonna get him in trouble.

He's got the makings of a Boston Celtic. :teeth:

I think Thabeet is a project as well. Not many big men come into the league with polished post games like Patrick or Hakeem did back in the day. Guys are so quick jump at the money (I don't blame them), that is retards thier growth as a player. NBA coaches aren't teachers like college coaches are. It is assumed you have some game. So guys like Patrick Ewing are brought in to tutor the young guys on basics the should have gotten in college. There is a major shortage of quality bigmen in the NBA when an offensively limited player like Thabeet is a lottery pick. That is why I keep hoping E-city can get his act together. That IS our lottery pick center and at least he has polished offensive game around the basket.

Curry is polished?

For every 15-20 points he gives you
you get 3-4 turnovers in return.

Dude...get over Curry, he's the worst thing to ever happen to this franchise.
His post defense, help defense and overall basketball IQ is the worst at his position. He's so bad at giving the ball to an open man or taking what the defense gives him...he's so bad at fighting for rebonds or playing with a drop of passion.

Curry is an offensive post specialist.

Nothing more.
Not a NBA starter.

Just another pussy from Chicago.

We gave up Aldridge, Noah + cap space + more draft picks for Curry's lame ass.

Imagine a frontcourt of Aldridge/Noah...with Gallinari at the SF...that leaves us with PG/SG open...could of drafted Augustin last year and get Tyreke Evans this year.

Only if I was GM...

How does Rubio have all this pub when he is only what 18? The kid is being talked about like he has all the tools but he is very little and a defensive liability...I wouldnt touch him. Id much rather pick up Steve Nash and move up to draft Thabeet...
I wouldnt draft any player under 6'3...makes no sense to me!

Because he's been playing at the highest level of competition since he was 14.
Rubio is 6"5, you moron. Rubio won defensive player of the year in Europe...where are you getting your information from?
You assessing a player's success on his height makes no sense.
