Certainly something to take in to account. The numbers and the effort defensively don't lie. Was Novak worthy of the contract? Can Brewer's shooting maintain above .400 from 3 and .500 within?

Who would you keep, and why?

And, more intriguingly, is Novak's status enough to make a solid trade for a team that needs him? We have Shump coming back in roughly 2 months, and Woodson will favour his defence. I am aware that Shump's return will be hindered and somewhat cumbersome, but the 2 are incomparable in Woodson's eyes, I'm sure.

:shock2: Holy sh!t Brewer is shooting 42% from the 3 point line, who would of ever imagined that.

Can he maintain the hot shooting? so far so good.. i think he can if he continues to work at it.

Is Novak worth the contract we gave him? Nope Novak is a one trick pony.

Would i keep Novak over Brewer? Definitely...

1- Novak is the best 3 point shooter in the NBA ( debatable statement ) but to me he is.

2-Novak has a very quick/ efficient release and helps open up the floor

3- We will have a log jam at the 2 when shump returns ( Jr, shump, Brewer, white.. kidd might still see some time at the 2 spot even when shump returns

4- I love the discount double check

5- Jr + Novak = instant offense off the bench.

Can you find another 3 point specialist in the NBA? of course you can.. will his shooting be up to par with Novak? probably not.

If we didn't already have Shumpert who when healthy is a better defender than Brewer and clearly has more of an upside to his game, then maybe i'd consider keeping Brewer over Novak

However i'd love to see Brewer in a knicks uniform next season for the extra depth... but the way he's playing he's probably a goner next season + he will get more playing time elsewhere.... if he stays he's playing behind Shump and Jr and receiving very limited mins.. unless woody brings him off the bench with the second unit and slides Novak to the 4 and Brewer to the 3.

the stats are very damning to Novak but i think the sample size is too small to make a judgement yet. certainly by the all star break we will have a better picture of this team. Right now, to me, novak is expendable and overpaid but i expect that will change with more games played and shots taken.

I do see redundancy in brewer and Iman as perimeter defensive specialists but i'm not sure that the depth is a bad thing. Brewer has been a steal at the price we got him but i think it's only a 1 year contract right? I don't think we'll keep brewer next year, but if he continues like this i'd love to have him back in OnB next year.

Indeed on paper Brewer looks like the better player but he's a career 26% 3 point shooter, he's going to come back down to earth at some point in that regard.

That 3pt % is highly bloated from an excellent start to the season also. In fact in his last 8 games he's hit 4 of 13 from deep, which is pretty much right on the 30% mark.

If we only have him shooting from the corner he may be able to keep his % in the low to mid 30's, but he doesn't fill the same role as Novak at all, teams are not going to be afraid of him shooting from the perimeter.

Having said that I don't think either player is expendable on this team regardless. Yes we are going to have a deep guard rotation once Shumpert returns but considering that the guard rotation involves a 39 yr old Jason Kidd, a 35 yr old Prigioni and Shumpert who has already had 3 seperate knee injuries in his rookie season.

I think Novak plays too big of a role on the team to be perfectly honest. He should be playing 10-15 minutes only.

I'm really concerned about Shumpert, the speed at which he plays and the fact he's already had a very major injury. We shouldn't be running him more than 28 minutes a game.

Tough call

If Brewer keeps hitting that corner three, his defense might be the deciding factor. But odds are he won't keep hitting threes at over 40 per cent, considering he isn't even 30 for his career.

Obviously, Novak is only really good for this three-point shooting, but he is pretty phenomenal at it, and hasn't really been at his best so far this season. I think he'll get better as the season progresses.

The problem is, when defenses key in on him (like miami in the playoffs), he becomes a non-factor, other than spacing the floor by keeping his man out by the three point line.

He has seemed to be "trying harder" on defense to me, and made a few decent plays, but he's still a liability on D. He's also made a couple of shot fake and then shoot again plays which are new to his repertoire, which makes him a little better.

At the moment, the Knicks are getting plenty of open threes, and plenty of guys knocking them down. But when the playoffs come, threes will be a lot harder to come by.

What I'd really like to see is a screen or two for him. Seriously, am I the only one confused by this? Why don't they run him under the basket and put a screen or two or three for him to get him open, like the Celtics would do for Allen? I'm not saying call his number 15 times a game, but I think his shooting ability warrants 3-5 screens a game.

I see Brewer more as a 2 - 3 guy and Novak as a 3 -4 so they don't really get in the way of each other.

If anything, it'll be hard keeping Kidd//Brewer/JR happy while getting Shump back in the lineup.

Not to mention the logjam at PF/C when Amare gets back.
Though Amare really needs to play more Center, but in order to do that he has to box out and rebound. Take a cue from Melo and at least try to make other better.

The BIGGEST issue I see coming is Amare and Tyson.... They just don't work well together. They're both very dependent on pick and rolls and unless Tyson can prove he has a consistent midrange jumper, they'll double up on Amare whenever he rolls. I don't get why people are so focused on Amare/Melo..... I think they can play fine offensively together.... we'll see about defense :)

*I think Novak's defense gets "exploited" because guys are so eager to posterize the white guy that they try extra hard to go at him. Considering all the ISOs they try to run against Novak, he's not doing too bad...at least from what I've seen.

lets face it, he is kinda unathletic but there are plenty of athletic white guys lol

Novak is more important to this team.. those stats are from right after thanksgiving.. Im sure novak is averaging much more points a game... When hes on the floor with melo is opens up the floor spacing for Melo and vice versa.. And he has worked on his game.. U has worked on creating his own shot off the dribble and it has worked out .. He takes maybe 2 or 3 dribbles but its still creating.. and the pump fake and step up is money

Novak is mainly for stricky 3 pt shootgunning Brewer is D but his 3pt is addition and he is poor from FT.

After 20 games Brewer & Novak has become great ASSETS to the Knicks rotation roster ..
one brings defensive hustle on the passin-lane & peremeter on oponents G/F plus add screens on offense, and the other brings box-out rebounds plus lights-out shooting that must be defended.
The two players bring DEPTH to the rotation .. looking at their stats dont give u half of what they bring to the court each game.

Coach Woody shouldnt have a problem by midseason of designing a defensive switch-system for oponents picks & screens with Novak & Brewer ..
both are system-role-players.
