Phil Jackson, Mike D’Antoni candidates to replace fired Lakers coach Mike Brown

The Lakers, stressing the higher than normal expectations to win now put on the team with the arrivals of center Dwight Howard and point guard Steve Nash, fired coach Mike Brown yesterday, just five games into the season.

“Very surprising. I’m disappointed for him. He’s highly respected in our business,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle, also the president of the NBA Coaches Association, said last night at the Garden. “The timing of it is curious, it’s so early in the year. They may not remember that he coached Cleveland to the Finals in his second year in Cleveland. Sometimes teams get off to tough starts but they’ll be all right, and I assure you that he’ll be fine.”
