It doesn’t mean look out, Miami Heat, because the Knicks have started 4-0, or that the Knicks are a mortal lock to get one of the top four seeds in the Eastern Conference, or that they are going to make it out of the first round. Or that we should start booking time in the Canyon of Heroes for late June.
But know this: The last time the Knicks were this much fun to watch was when Marcus Camby was young, and Latrell Sprewell and Allan Houston were the backcourt and Larry Johnson could still make a 4-point play when his team really, really needed one. Those Knicks made it to the NBA Finals in 1999, nearly did it again the next year even with about half the team in traction.
You know what happened after that. The Knicks had a decade as bad as anybody in sports, what will always be remembered as the Isiah Thomas Era, made a joke out of the notion that the Garden was a mecca of anything except bad basketball.
