Pacers may sign Andrew Bynum

ESPN is reporting that the Pacers are in negotiations to sign Andrew Bynum. What burns me is the fact the Pacers have the cap flexibility to sign the guy at all for more than the minumum giving the Pacers an advantage over the Knicks who can only sign players for the min.

They still have over 2M left after signing Copeland in the off-season and aren't paying any tax which will help them in future signings. The Pacers are a well managed team, the Knicks are not.

The Indiana Pacers met with free agent center Andrew Bynum and his agent, David Lee, in Indianapolis on Friday. No contract agreement was in place, but the talks are "serious," a source told ESPN.
Bynum has been in talks with five teams, including the Miami Heat, sources said. The Heat, however, do not have a roster spot available and have been willing to offer Bynum a contract only at the veteran's minimum.
Bynum has been seeking something more than the minimum salary, sources said.

David Richard/USA TODAY SportsThe Pacers have $2.1 million left of their midlevel exception and could use some or all on signing center Andrew Bynum.

The Indianapolis Star reported earlier Friday that Bynum had met with the Pacers. Bynum told the Cleveland Plain Dealer earlier in the day that he hadn't yet decided to sign with a team.
The Pacers, who have a roster spot open, have $2.1 million left of their midlevel exception, and they could use some or all of it on Bynum. But the Pacers are roughly $1.8 million below the luxury-tax threshold, and team president Larry Bird has said repeatedly they do not plan to pay the luxury tax.
The Heat have their entire $5 million midlevel exception to use but are scheduled to pay more than $15 million in luxury taxes and would have to pay a penalty of $2.50 per dollar they gave Bynum if they were not able to trade a player to offload some salary and open roster space.
Bynum, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, averaged 8.4 points and 5.3 rebounds in 24 games for the Cleveland Cavaliers this season. The Cavs traded him to the Chicago Bulls with two future draft picks for Luol Deng on Jan. 7. The Bulls, in a salary-saving move, released Bynum the next day before the second half of his $12 million contract became guaranteed.
The Pacers, who have the East's best record at 35-10, could use Bynum as a backup to All-Star center Roy Hibbert.
The Heat, who trail the Pacers by three games in the East, have been getting encouraging play recently from backup center Greg Oden, who returned after missing more than four years due to knee problems.

I like AB....with two big "if's"

if he's healthy... and if he is motivated... when he is both, he is if not the top big man, is 1-2-3.. i'd take him in a heartbeat over brook,,or howard... but those two 'if's' are hangin low I agree....

I did hear that there was a run this week on advil in the indy area... one druggist managed to get a picture of the guy...

Advil in the Indy area, you are too funny.

He can't hurt the Pacers can he?? Maybe he can if a lottery team like Cleveland dumped him. Bynum is only signed until the end of the season for 1M so there's even less risk for the Pacers than Cleveland that had to fork over 6M for less than 1/2 season of playing time.

It took Larry Bird a while to totally clean-up all of "Isiah & Walsh" negativity within the Indiana Pacers organization.

The Pacers have 30 something regular season games, where a Lazy big-body Bynum could come in useful to rest some of their main frontline bigmen months before the postseason games start.

The "Larry Bird" 36-10 Pacers without Bynum has showed repeatedly all season that the "players & coaching-staff" are all on the same-page.
Bynum have to meet up to their standards, not the other way around.

signed to Indy. end thread. Knicks tried last minute, but failed. what else is new?

We're always lookin....window shoppin.....huffin and a bluffin...fake hustlin.

Here's what I find most intriguing about the Pacer signing.....

Paul George, the Pacers' All-Star starter. “We hope the second he walks into our locker room everybody welcomes him with open arms and he feels the chemistry of the team.

“We're a close group here. We're all on the same page. We'll know right off the bat if he's going to be committed to us or not.”
