Offense or defense?
Which of the two should the Phil/Fish coaching-staff imbed in the players to concentrate on playing for a successful season? offense? or defense?

So many Knicks Fans before training-camp are talking about who will be in the Knicks STARTER line-up?
Any starter-lineup should have offensive-players with the ability to outscore opponents in the first quarter.

The Knicks 4th quarter rotation (The crunch-time and Finisher lineup) should have defensive-players with the ability to provide STOPS for the Knicks win. It does not matter if the Knicks win by 1 or 2 points, a win is a WIN!

I think this team needs to focus on becoming effective with the triangle offense first. No amount of coaching is going to turn this team into a group of defensive stoppers over the course of one training camp. We need to turn over certain elements of our roster before that will happen. We know that guys like Shump and Dalembert will show up ready to play individual defense, the team defense will likely not be there for some time.

For what it's worth, Fisher says only Melo has a spot in the starting lineup right now. If that's truly the case, then this training camp will be huge, if only to show who has shown up healthy and ready to commit to the new team philosophies. I am very excited to see how this will play out.

Also, I completely agree that the guys on our current roster built to start the game may be very different than the guys on this roster built to finish games.

I agree htr10 the team has a lot of work to do in only a month. Have to concentrate on implementing the triangle and coming out of camp with a rotation. Seems like a huge mountain to climb, new rookie coach, so many new players, no set rotation other than Melo and even with him his game will be in transition from an iso game to the triangle and his role in it.

I'm fully expecting what the Nets went through last year, a slow start and gradual improvement as the team gels. They aren't as talented as last years Nets team and the EC is more balanced so its a real possibility that the Knicks miss the playoffs. It should be an interesting season whatever happens.

I was watching the 49er/Eagles game and there was a play where the Niners had a 4th and long somewhere near mid-field, the Niners lined up like they were going for it trying to draw the Eagles offside with a hard count and Kapernick ran down the play clock before calling timeout to punt it.

Harbaugh started yelling like crazy to try to cancel the timeout because they could have taken a delay of game penalty and actually made a short punt easier to get inside the 10. A heady or more experienced QB probably would have taken the delay of game instead of wasting a valuable TO.

I only mention this because that's what I want to see in Fisher a heady coach who makes instinctively good decisions. Woody wasn't good at it nor was D'Antoni imo, I thought JVG was that kind of heady coach.

Five things to look for in training camp

With training camp opening Tuesday, we take a look at five things to watch for the New York Knicks:

1. Melo, the Knicks and the triangle: Training camp will give the Knicks an opportunity to learn the nuances of the triangle offense without worrying about wins and losses.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes Carmelo Anthony and his teammates to adapt to an offense that's predicated on ball and player movement. Over the past two seasons under Mike Woodson, the Knicks ran an offense that was heavy on isolation.

Having point guard Jose Calderon, who is widely known as a strong shooter and distributor, should help ease the transition. So will having Phil Jackson on hand and assistants Kurt Rambis and Jim Cleamons on Derek Fisher's bench.

2. Shooting guard competition: Who will Fisher choose to start at shooting guard?

J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert and Tim Hardaway Jr. will compete for minutes at the position.

Hardaway Jr. is coming off of a strong rookie season on the offensive end but had a tough time on defensive, which is common for rookies.

Shumpert is a strong defender but struggled to produce consistently on offense.

Smith finished the season strong but ran afoul of both the NBA and the Knicks on and off the court.

With no leader at this point, it will be worth keeping an eye on this battle throughout camp.

3. Dominant defense? Fisher made it clear on Friday that his top priority in camp will be to improve the Knicks on defense.

“We’re going to prioritize defense,” he said. “A lot of focus will be on what we do offensively and how guys are going to fit into it or buy into it, whether or not our players like it or don’t like it, but successful teams play defense. There’s no way around it."

The Knicks struggled mightily on defense last season, finishing 24th in defensive efficiency, a measure of points allowed per 100 possessions. They also ranked 28th in points allowed per shot.

New York will likely have to establish a strong team defense. Obviously, all strong defensive teams play great defense collectively. But the Knicks may have to rely on the strength of a five-man unit even more than other teams because they lack strong individual defenders on the roster.

Shumpert is one of the top young perimeter defenders in the NBA. But the Knicks traded away their top interior defender, Tyson Chandler.

4. Battle for minutes at power forward: Shooting guard isn't the only interesting training camp competition. As Jackson noted Friday, the Knicks have several candidates who will battle for minutes at power forward. There's Amar'e Stoudemire, Andrea Bargnani, Anthony (who has played extensively at power forward the past two seasons) and PF/C Jason Smith.

If the Knicks want to play with a smaller lineup, they can go with Anthony at power forward. If not, maybe they start Stoudemire alongside Anthony and Samuel Dalembert on the front line?

5. Fisher learning on the job: Fisher will be making a big leap from player to NBA head coach.

Fisher has veteran assistants Rambis and Cleamons on staff, which should ease his transition. But there will invariably be bumps in he road for Fisher, who has never coached on any level.

Fisher said Friday that one of his biggest adjustments will concern communication. More specifically, Fisher wants to be able to effectively communicate expectations to his players.

"Just understanding the level of communication required to make sure players are clear, the team is clear, about expectations, about what it is you want to see, how you want things happening out on the floor," Fisher said.

One other adjustment?

"Realizing that you’re responsible," he said, "for everyone."

Looks like DFish sent the Knicks a message in his first practice. Defense was the emphasis in his first practice, the Knicks did not practice the triangle at all on Day 1 in West Point.

Today, the first day of training-camp, I was shock when reading different articles (or rumors) on the net of the Knicks looking to trade there perimeter defensive guard Shump. Whats up with that?
Does Fish know about this?

?We?re going to prioritize defense,? he said. ?A lot of focus will be on what we do offensively and how guys are going to fit into it or buy into it, whether or not our players like it or don?t like it, but successful teams play defense. There?s no way around it."

Well put by a rookie defensive-coach Fish

Best Defensive Players are:

PG-Prigioni (steals)
SG-Shump (steals)
SF-Outlaw / Acy
PF-Smith / Sanchez (blocks)
C-Dalembert (Blocks/Stops)
The end of last season Shump & Prigioni showed they want the defensive-leadership job.

The rest of the roster are offensive-scorers who must keep ball movement flowing in the triangle-offense.
