Game Preview

It's been 11 years since the New York Knicks won at Houston. They may be catching the sputtering Rockets at an opportune time to prevent that streak from continuing.

The Knicks look to win their fourth straight Saturday night and end an 11-game overall slide against Houston.

New York (7-6) has lost 19 of its last 20 meetings with the Rockets (5-8), including all 10 at Houston by an average of 12.0 points since last winning there on Nov. 18, 2004.

The Knicks enter this visit with a season-best three-game win streak, limiting opponents to an average of 90.3 points on 42.0 percent shooting - 14 of 70 from 3-point range - during that run.

The Rockets are in a major lull that cost coach Kevin McHale his job earlier this week after he guided them to the Western Conference finals last season. They've dropped five of the last six games, falling 96-84 at Memphis on Friday in their lowest scoring effort of the season.

"I think we were just struggling to find our shots," said interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who is 1-1 since replacing McHale. "We missed 15 shots in the paint, missed 15 free throws and turned the ball over 23 times."

Friday marked another poor shooting performance by Houston, which shot 37.8 percent - including 6 of 29 from beyond the arc - and made only two baskets in a 14-point fourth quarter.

The Rockets rank near the bottom of the league with a 41.3 field-goal percentage.

"We have got to find a way to get baskets, especially with a team like that," said guard Jason Terry, who scored two points on 1-of 5 shooting.

James Harden is among the league leaders with 28.2 points per game, but he's making just 25.6 percent of his 3s after hitting 37.5 last season. The All-Star guard missed 6 of 7 attempts from long range but still finished with 22 points against the Grizzlies.

Harden, though, is averaging 31.3 points while connecting on 51.7 percent from the field - 49.0 from deep - over his last seven meetings with the Knicks.

He won't have Dwight Howard's inside presence Saturday as Houston plans on resting the team's second-leading scorer with games on consecutive days. The Rockets have lost three of four without him this season.

"That's the plan for now," Bickerstaff said.

New York opened a four-game road trip with Friday's 93-90 victory over Oklahoma City, holding on after nearly blowing a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter. Carmelo Anthony scored 25 points for the Knicks, who limited the Thunder to season lows of 38.0 percent from the floor and 3 for 29 from 3-point range.

"Just reminding the guys that the end result is just figuring out a way to win, regardless of how it looks," coach Derek Fisher said. "We will keep working at cleaning things up and trying to finish it better."

Anthony could be poised for a big game, having averaged 32.7 points over his last 10 against the Rockets.

New York extended its win streak Friday with a limited contribution from rookie Kristaps Porzingis, who had seven points and six rebounds after he had 29 and 11 in a 102-94 victory over Charlotte on Tuesday.

The Knicks already have seven wins, a total they didn't reach last season until Jan. 21.

Thanks for another great game thread, Rady. All I can say is that I just hope we can keep things rolling tonight. Let's go Knicks!

8-6 record with a tough early season schedule. Coming off 2 great wins against WC teams including Houston who we haven't beaten in 11 years, can't say enough about this team. We're 11th in the NBA power rankings and stand right in the middle of the pack statistically ranking 15th both offensively and defensively but trending up jumping 5 spots in the rankings this week. A season of surprises with the Clips and Rockets playing mediocre ball and the Knicks playing competent bball.

Let's keep it going against the Heat in Miami tonight.

Thanx for the GAME-THREAD Rady .. nice goin

This will be a Ruff Ruff Ruff game to win in Miami
Thas right I wanted Winslow .. I blame the Big Apple NY media for KP being booed on draft night.
Our sports media never said anything about PK until preseason games

These are bad matchups for the Knicks, Whiteside and Bosh. Let's see what Rolo and #kp do with these guys.

Miami has been talking about zeroing in on KP--my guess is they try to overplay him, maybe gang up on him in order to take him out of if. That's OK--guys like Melo, AA, D-Will, Galloway, Seraphin etc. all need to step up....

KP for 3...BANG! Off and runnin'!!

#kp knocks down a 3 for the first points of the game. His % is creeping up.

Robin Lopez with the ball going at Whiteside is literally the worst strategy we could employ.

tiger0330
Nov 23, 2015, 18:48
JC playing a nice game early, couple of jump shots and a steal.

Lopez with two consecutive offensive boards and putbacks over Whiteside. Our two 7 footers are given us an advantage against Miami's solo tower.

A couple of weeks ago (pre Laker game) I was talking about how Kobe had more in the tank than Dwayne Wade and could be a better FA option on a 1 or 2 yr deal should the Knicks whiff on the better FAs this summer and still want to add a superior win-now talent. I couldn't have been more wrong about that. Wade clearly has much more left in the tank. Plus, Kobe's come out and said he's retiring as a Laker after the season, so I was wrong there too.

tiger0330

That was a terrible shot by Melo. I thought he was over that this season.

No travel on Whiteside there? Got to the rim w/o taking a dribble

If Kobe has any pride he calls it a career this year.

Quinn sighting. The Seraphin experiment may be over if Quinn can do something.

Zero points from the bench so far thats the story of the game so far.

MIA on an 20-2 run... Our bench gave us nada... Knicks 9-31 shooting... We simply cannot score.

This went so bad, so fast, for so long. This is last year's team's effort and effect.

Try to get this under 10 going into the half..

Nov 23, 2015, 19:26
Just like ATL... Fisher subbing in 4 and 5 bench guys at once is just a killer... As MIA blows the second unit out...

htr10
Nov 23, 2015, 19:36
Granted Miami is a top defensive team, but 30 points in the first half? Brutal.

tiger0330
Nov 23, 2015, 19:42
You expect the occasional bad night but lets see what the Knicks are made of coming out of the locker room in the second half.

Is it just my imagination or do we often seem to get killed on Garden of Dreams raffle nights? For some reason, I remember this happening multiple times before.

tiger0330
Nov 23, 2015, 20:04
Chipping away. Just keep the Heat out of the paint, now's the time for Fish to give his starters extended minutes because the bench hasn't done anything.

tiger0330
Nov 23, 2015, 20:08
The Heat have Melo bottled up, without him I don't think the Knicks have a chance when the Heat go on their next run.

Its the end of the 3rd qtr. it dont look like the bench got many minutes to run up and down the court .. I missed the first half

Has Melo been playing defense on Deng n Bosh ???

Has Melo been playing defense on Deng n Bosh ???
To me it hasn't been his D, he's been jacking up terrible shots and making poor decisions when he has the ball.

Like I said, Amunson is good for rebounds .. lineup of Serafin, Amund, and Melo should dominate Miami bench

Where's Quinn ???

Melo to KP for 2 down low .. we need to practice that move fluently in a game

Nov 23, 2015, 20:30
We're hanging around down by 15, but not much time left. At least we just didn't rollover and let otherselves get completely humiliated, still, discouraging night so far.

He got a couple of minutes in the 1st half didn't do anything. I think he's out of the rotation.

I said in the off-season, he was nothing special on the offensive end and why would the Magic give up on the guy for 4M a year and give his job do Dedmon. I might be right about the guy, a lot of these PJ signings that looked so good in the pre-season are coming back to earth.

tiger0330
Nov 23, 2015, 20:49
Lou Amundson in crunch time is not winning you many games.

tiger0330
Nov 23, 2015, 21:00
It's only one game and they have a nice season so far but what worries me is when Gallo and Lance come back to earth what happens. Gallo and Lance are not shooting over 40% from long range for the whole4 season. Grant looks lost, DWill and Quinn have come back to earth so can #kp, Melo, Affalo and Rolo keep this thing rolling if that 2nd unit doesn't produce like today.

mafra
Nov 23, 2015, 21:28
It was 17-13 NYK... A decent start... Then the second unit came in and stunk... This game sort of mirrored the ATL blowout... Bad news was we didnt bring the necessary effort to challenge an upper echelon conference foe (unlike how we always get up for CLE) and were basically blitzed wire to wire. The good news is, unlike last year, we never allowed a 20 point lead to balloon and get out of control... We could never get back in the game, let alone get over the hump, but we kept it in the 12-18 deficit range... Almost made it interesting too... But, like most nights, Melo just couldnt be superman in the 4th...

Calderon, Grant, and Galloway combined for about 6 points... Affalo didnt do much either... Tough to win with this guard play... Toss in a fat zero from the bench, and the fact we missed almost 20 three point shots... Well, there you go.

More evidence that we are just a 5-8 seed type team at best... We are nowhere near a top 4 team in the Conf... But, lots of season left... We just had an off night... If we win in ORL... A 3-1 road trip is nice... Lets see what we do to MIA at MSG.

#kporzee was solid, the rest of the team was meh to terrible. Fisher constantly playing 100guys is was past stale.

Robin lopez who I am not a fan of by the way also had a good game. 12/8 boards and shot pretty well, he is the main reason why porzingis is getting a lot of those easy defensive boards, lopez is doing all of the dirty work. So far he has had a huge impact on that knicks front line

I was drooling over Whiteside not Rolo, supposedly he tried out for the Knicks a couple of seasons ago. #kp can hold his own without Rolo on the floor.
