Carmelo Vents over lack of foul calls

New York Knicks F Carmelo Anthony vented to the media on Wednesday over the lack of foul calls he has received this season (Berman, Dec. 9).

The eight time NBA All-Star is in the midst of a slump during his last five games. He has shot only 40.6 percent from the field over that span. Anthony has attributed his inability to get to the free-throw line to his struggles.

"They just tell me I'm the most difficult player to referee in the NBA,'' Anthony said. "I've heard that a couple of times. It's unclear on who is creating the contact. My goal is to go to the basket. If I'm creating the contact going toward the basket [and] I get hit, it's a foul.''

Anthony, who has received a technical foul in each of the past two games, has been unable to control his growing frustration with the referees.

"I'm human,'' Anthony added. "Those frustrations kick in at times, especially when you're down there banging and know you're getting banged on. I don't know what else to do. I don't know how to play another way.''

When asked if he would consider selling fouls more by flopping, Anthony explained that isn't part of his game.

"See, I don't know how to flop, that's the thing," Anthony said. "Nowadays guys know how to flop, get hit and put their head back. I don't know how to flop. I won't even look right trying to do that. I won't even feel right trying it.

Anthony is averaging a near career-low 21.5 points, 7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.

Keith Schlosser, SNY.TV: Many around the league, be it executives, media, and even fans recognize full well that Anthony has never been especially privy to "superstar" calls. Say what you want about Anthony and his inefficiency this season, but there's no denying that he's been taking a beating underneath the basket for years. The wear and tear can be seen in the injuries he's had to deal with on his shoulder, knee, and groin. He's clearly better suited for the power forward position in today's small-ball NBA.

Despite how well his agility could create mismatches, perhaps the Knicks are hesitant to slot him down there because of how banged up he'll become. If an opponent recognizes that he doesn't get appropriate calls, they'll continue to go at him.

He says he won't stoop so low as to flop his body around, but one could argue that even that wouldn't help. Superstars flop because they can. They have the respect of the referees and can sell it accurately enough. If a star falls, they believe chances are an inexperienced player is more likely to be at fault. The star gets the benefit of the doubt. Anthony never has, however.

Anthony loses his cool now and then during games, especially on Monday night against the Mavericks, and this hurts the Knicks. He has a right to be frustrated about this, but it's good to see him channeling it in a different way this time around.

Carmelo rant: Refs snub me because I?m too strong to flop

Marc Berman

SALT LAKE CITY ? A candid Carmelo Anthony explained his recent frustrations at not getting enough foul calls, saying he?s been told by referees he?s the most ?difficult player?? to officiate and vowing he will never flop.

Anthony, who has received a technical foul in two straight games, is in a five-game slump with his shooting percentage dipping to 40.6 percent on the season. He admitted his wife, La La, chastised him for yelling at female referee Lauren Holtkamp in Monday?s loss to the Mavericks.

?They just tell me I?m the most difficult player to referee in the NBA,?? Anthony said at the morning shootaround in Utah. ?I?ve heard that a couple of times. It?s unclear on who is creating the contact. My goal is to go to the basket. If I?m creating the contact going toward the basket [and] I get hit, it?s a foul.??

Anthony is one of the most physical drivers in the game, but said he feels he?s recently not being effective because he?s not getting to the free-throw line.

?I always get fouled,?? Anthony said. ?That?s what?s frustrating me. You play so hard, work so hard and don?t benefit from that. You look at other guys, you touch them and look at them wrong and get fouls. It?s a frustrating thing for me as a guy who likes to go to the basket, play in the paint. I like to play physical. It?s frustrating.

?I?m human,?? Anthony added. ?Those frustrations kick in at times, especially when you?re down there banging and know you?re getting banged on. I don?t know what else to do. I don?t know how to play another way.??

So does he need to sell the foul more?

?See, I don?t know how to flop, that?s the thing,? Anthony said. ?Nowadays guys know how to flop, get hit and put their head back. I don?t know how to flop. I won?t even look right trying to do that. I won?t even feel right trying it.

?A lot of times I get hit and I still continue to get to my spots just because I?m big and strong. A lot of guys get hit and they stop. I?m not saying they?re flopping, but they?re lighter than me. I can take a lot more physicality.?

Anthony?s extended remarks put him at risk of drawing a fine from the NBA. The league frowns on players criticizing the officiating.

But it?s not just the whistles. Anthony still believes he?s not in full groove after shutting down last season in February to undergo knee surgery and not getting on the court until August.

?The looks are there,?? Anthony said. ?Some days the rhythm is there, some days it?s not. It?s me staying in the gym finding that rhythm. Some nights they go in, some nights they don?t. There?s weeks it?s been back and games it?s not back. As a competitor, I get frustrated because I know I put so much work on those parts of my game, and when it doesn?t work out, I beat myself up.??

The Knicks have lost six of their past eight games, and Derek Fisher has upped the level of urgency, staging a 70-minute morning shootaround after complaining of lack of practice time.

?We have to start looking at things and tightening up,?? Anthony said. ?The only time you can do that is in practice. When you don?t have that practice time, you start thinking about that. But now we got to go with it and got to get better in the games and use that as the experience and figure it out on the fly, too.??

Anthony said the Knicks have held players meetings, and unlike heated ones in the past, these have gone smoothly.

?There?s no egos on this team,?? Anthony said.

Melo doesn't have much of a case, although there are moments during games he could get an extra call or two. The reasons his case is ultimately trash here...

- He uses his off arm on dribble penetration like a jousting weapon and initiates tons of contact
- He's become more and more and more and more of a jump shooter as he continues to lose athleticism

This is what you start seeing/hearing from players who are on a decline. Some fans are starting to turn on Melo yet want to sympathize with his cry baby tactic to the media?

Yes this is the same Carmelo who said he bought into the triangle until pine tar on his hands prevented his passing the ball or finding the open man CONSISTANTLY. Who is ever surprised when he goes back to his ISO crap while four team mates stand around holding their dicks. Carmelo can be summed up as follows: 28 points and loose the game or 12 points and win; CARMELO will take the 28. Therefore, his frustration will continue on calls until he gets the referees on his side. Wally S. says he needs to adjust his game.

You can also sum up Melo by his decision to sacrifice this season so he could hold off surgery for a few month so he could appear in an exhibition game. Being the BMOC at MSGast all star break meant more to him than winning....

Yep. He says his surgically repaired knee still bothering him and is a work in process to get back to 100%... This is why you should've had surgery in November or December.... Not late Feb or March...

That rant is not going to work out well for carmelo.. He is not a relevant star in the NBA.. he should just keep quiet..

carmelo needed to adjust his game years ago... This is not going to be pretty.. NY fans wanted him here "GET YOUR MONEY MELO" Phil was stupid for signing him after he opted out..

Enjoy this bumpy ride to nowhere...

Melo's statement proves prescient... Today, NBA announced that the ref missed a call at end of SAC game... There was a foul on Rondo... and the NBA stated in today's report that a foul should have been called.

Don't all the superstars...NOT. RFLMAO. Played great last night against PORTLAND. He was pushed out of bounds ..and an incorrect call. On the missed shot in the Sacramento game, they missed the { NBA} call , even Carmelo said he had a great look and missed an easy shot. Sh*t happens to Melo a lot. He is not respected

I watched NBA Basketball all day yesterday and here's the story. LeBron gets calls when he hooks, charges as a foul against the defender. He charges and gets the same call sending him to the line. From what I saw Harden , LeBron and Wade get calls in their favor. Melo is absolutely right on calls. He is not treated as a superstar for sure by the refs.

It's a little late in his career to be doing this but he's got to sell those calls he wants. Harden sells his calls by flailing his arms when he drives the lane. Melo has to do something like that to get more calls.
