Game Thread: New York Knicks @ Philadelphia 76ers 7:00 pm 1/11/2017 [Game#39]

New York Knicks point guard Derrick Rose, inexplicably absent from his team's home loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night, returned to the Knicks' practice facility on Tuesday.

Still to be determined is whether he will play Wednesday when the Knicks (17-21) face the Philadelphia 76ers (10-25) on the road.

Rose did not show up for the 110-96 loss to the Pelicans, and did not inform his teammates or Knicks officials that he would be absent. Multiple media outlets reported that team officials were unable to reach him by phone, and ESPN.com, citing unnamed sources, reported that Knicks representatives grew so concerned they went looking for him at his apartment.

The same outlet later reported that he went to Chicago to deal with a family situation, and that he returned for Tuesday's practice and met with general manager Steve Mills. The team announced he was fined and Rose met with reporters, saying "it was a family issue when quizzed about his absence.

Rose, a three-time All-Star and the 2011 NBA MVP while playing for the Chicago Bulls, was acquired in an offseason trade. He is averaging 17.3 points and 4.5 assists per game, but Yahoo Sports reported that Rose has grown increasingly frustrated with his role. First-year coach Jeff Hornacek has benched him in the fourth quarter of the last two games in favor of undrafted rookie Ron Baker.

Overall, the Knicks have lost eight of nine. Veteran forward Carmelo Anthony is once again the team's leading scorer (21.9), but he was ejected in the third quarter of Monday's game for arguing with referee Danny Crawford.

Reserve forward Kyle O'Quinn was ejected soon after that for a flagrant 2 foul on New Orleans star Anthony Davis, who collected 40 points and 18 rebounds in the game.

The Sixers have won three of four, most recently beating the Brooklyn Nets 106-95 on Sunday to match their victory total for all of last season. Rookie center Joel Embiid led the way with 20 points, and afterward said he has high hopes for the season.

"We are seven or eight games out of the playoffs, so we have a chance," he told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "We are learning. We are coming together. We are learning how to play with each other. We are just great now."

Philadelphia is 13th in the East, and 7 1/2 games out of the eighth and final playoff spot, but Embiid has established himself as the clear frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year award. He leads all first-year players, as well as his team, in scoring (19.4), rebounding (7.3) and blocked shots (2.4), while averaging just 25 minutes a game.

The team is restricting him to 28 minutes a night after Embiid, the third pick in the 2014 draft, missed two seasons following a pair of foot surgeries.

Sixers coach Brett Brown has struggled to find minutes for Embiid and two other highly drafted centers, Nerlens Noel and Jahlil Okafor, but the last two games Brown has elected not to use Okafor at all.

Philadelphia signed rookie guard Chasson Randle to a 10-day contract on Tuesday. Randle, a Stanford product, averaged 21 points a game in 19 appearances for the Westchester Knicks of the NBA Development League. He began the season in the Czech Republic.

I can't see the Knicks losing to the lowly 76ers no matter how badly they're playing.

The Knicks has 3 wins and 10 losses in our last 13 games .. making the Knicks organization a question mark team again.

How will our future 7.3 KP do vs the 7.0 ROY Joel Embiid 19 pts, 7 rebs, 2 blks in 24 minute playing-time per game?
Are Philly serious about trading Noel?
C-Embiid/PF-Okafor/PF-Noel in a rotation are some nice ingredients for a winning recipe .... there's no reason for a 10-25 record.

DRose balling 5-6 from the field 10 mins in. Now you see why he wasn't suspended.

Quinn has a double double 10/11 in 11 mins. Horn if he wants to try to turn this around has to give him an extended amount of games where he plays 30mpg.

Quinn in with the starters. I hope Horn heard me, he gives you everything Noah gives you plus that pick and pop from mid-range and the occasional 3.

52-47 Knicks at the half. Knicks were up by 17 but the Sixers had an 8-0 run in the second that cut the lead.

Embiid went out with some kind of left leg injury, slipped and looked like an ankle sprain, I would hold him out if I were the Sixers if he's not 100%.

Knicks shot 53.5 percent from the floor in gaining 52-47 lead at the half.

Left ankle tweak for Embiid but he's going to play the second half.

I don't believe it Covington with a straight on 3 to tie it 52-52.

Melo gave too much space to Covington allowing him wide open looks for his 2 3s and then blows a couple of layups and complains to the refs and doesn't get back and Stauskas cans a 3 playing 5 on 4 with the Knicks because Melo isn't in the play. Sixers are now up 60-56.

Keeping an eye online and here, not watching but I did see the clip where Embiid got ate up by the rim...wow!

Melo had a sensetional 3rd qtr. scoring 15 pts.

Nice block by Embiid on Melo's alley oop attempt coming from about 10ft away to block it.

Melo continues to struggle in the 4th qtr. hasn't scored. Knicks lead by one with 27 secs left 97-96. Knicks ball.

TJ McConnell hits a buzzer beating 2 off a KP missed 3 and Sixers runout. The futility continues, Knicks have hit rock bottom tonight and unless something changes they'll continue losing.

Philly with the crap shot, this is why I say don't play games down to a final possession...what else can be said, can't make this stuff up

Man, only NY can turn that scenario into an airball 3 and gift PHI a free extra possession. One can only hope Horny did this so we could blow it.

Knicks are a team of losers. Bad teams find a way to lose sure wins and this was a sure win against a bottom of the barrel NBA team. I would start discussions with Melo about him leaving NY but PJ and Horn aren't going to give up clinging to hope they can still make the playoffs because of all the teams clustered in the bottom seeds. That ESPN computer has us winning 36 games in the latest update but after tonight maybe the prediction goes down to less than 30 wins.
