Gallinari's bad back improving

BOSTON - Danilo Gallinari slowly and quietly has been making steady progress as he recovers from a lingering back injury that has shelved the lottery pick for most of his rookie season. His running and shooting workouts have intensified, but the Knicks will continue to proceed cautiously with the 20-year-old, who suffered a bulging disc during the summer.

"I think he's getting better," Mike D'Antoni said. "But said give it a couple more weeks to make sure."

After Gallinari met with several back specialists last month, the collective assessment was that he needed rest, not surgery. A time frame of six to eight weeks was given, meaning he could return sometime in January.

D'Antoni said Eddy Curry, who hasn't played this season because of a bone bruise in his left leg, is "improving" and is "close" to getting on the court. "I would think within the next two or three weeks, he should be able to," D'Antoni said. "They say a couple weeks start practicing, then playing soon, but that may be wishful thinking."

No rush to fill spot

Until the NBA rules on the Knicks' appeal to get a disabled player exception - which would be worth up to $4.4 million - for the roster spot that opened after Cuttino Mobley's retirement, the Knicks won't sign a player to replace Mobley.

"We just don't want to do something rash," D'Antoni said. "There's really no sense in doing something rash right now."

A possibility is Patrick Ewing Jr., who is playing in the D-League for Reno, a shared affiliate of the Knicks and Kings. Teams can sign players to 10-day contracts starting Jan. 5, but Ewing is more likely to fill a spot if and when Stephon Marbury is bought out.

Celtics' Davis: car accident

Celtics forward Glen Davis was injured in a car accident on his way to last night's game at TD Banknorth Garden. Davis suffered a concussion and whiplash, according to a Celtics spokesman. He was taken to an area hospital. The accident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on the Massachusetts Turnpike, which was a slushy mess from yesterday's winter storm ... Knicks forward Al Harrington, who was late for Friday's game against the Bucks because of weather-related traffic issues, was not fined for his tardiness ... Jared Jeffries sat out a third straight game to rest his ailing left leg. He is expected to practice Thursday and plans to return to the lineup Friday against the Timberwolves.

I hope Gallo is back, I feel like he's the type of talent to develop into a first option, he just has that ability and quality about him. The cock loves to pound the ball inside the hole and step outside for a wet longrange shot. That makes him very dynamic because he does both very well.

When they said 6-8 weeks rest I thought that meant 6-8 weeks of doing nothing other than maybe back exericises. It sounds like they are either rushing him again or that he's ahead of schedule (more like rushing)

good to hear about Gallo and wth his expected return of late January he could finally be the factor we all want him to be.....although i dont expect him to be in full game shape till at or after the allstar break......i say he finishes the year at around 16 ppg and 7 rebs

and as for Curry i guess its good news considering they only want him on the court to increase his trade value so we could unload him by the trade deadline, god forbid he produces in that timespan i mean were desperate for size.........(no homo)

I think this is very good news, I would love to see him back on the court. We can use another player, especially one who can consistently knock down open shots. Once he gets going, I believe he will thrive in D'antonis system.

I agree, I can see Gallinari becoming the leader we need.

I dont think D'antoni has any intentions of keeping Curry. Him and Walsh want Curry gone.

Thats a lot of differant info haha.

Yea I am very happy to hear that Galli is on his way back. I dunno if they are rushing him back. He probably has been doing low intensity shooting drills and hes feeling good so they are taking the next step. I want this kid to be awsome, as an Italian myself I want him to blow up and be a stud for the knicks for a while.

As for Curry, the sooner he gets healthy, the sooner we will have to deal with his garbage D, but also the sooner he will no longer be a knick. He can be a dominant scorer as we have seen and once he shows flashes I am possitive he's buying the next ticket out of NY to whoever wants to deal with his fat ass

I think they might be willing to keep Curry if he would actually get in shape, show real motivation to get better etc... But since that is so unlikely, he is likely to remain on the bench and get garbage time minutes until they find someone stupid enough to think they can get him motivated.

Gallo in my opinion will be a more efficient version of Al Harriongton in this offense. I think he passes the ball more than Harringotn so he probably will not have streaks where he averages 30 pts per game, but, I dont think he'll ever be as out of control as Al looks at times, he'll have his bad shooting nights like Al does but I dont think they will be as frequent. He'll probable grab one less board but will get a couple more assist and will shoot better from the feild and 3.

But it wont happen overnight he is going to have to get out there and take his lumps, but after he learns the league and the speed of the game he should be solid.

Gallo is very talented on the offensive side and his versitality will be very useful to u, and is much needed we have no players that could keep the defense on their feet, not knowing if they will drive or shoot, Nate is the only one but his size is a disadvantage even though he makes up for it and more, Chandler is known that he isnt that good of a shooter and needs someone to set him up and he's a force inside, a Harrington is close but he's a lil wild with the ball sometimes, so Gallo will be huge for us once he comes back and is in full gameshape

Can't wait till Gallo is back. Not only can this kid score in many different ways (penetration, shooting, foul line), but he can make plays for his teammates. He's a great ball handler and passer, he can be a point forward for us. Walsh made a great pick for us, I really hope his back will be fine for the rest of his career.

I couldn't care less about Curry. He doesn't have the will power, or the heart, to get in shape so he can contribute for us. I hope he can get on the floor though, so we can trade him.
