The things keeping the knicks from being Champions

I have decided that i will post a thread describing thoroughly what this team needs to win an NBA championship.I will not simply say "lets sign melo" then leave it at that but more so an indef view of what we are lacking.

1.Excellent rebounding Center that can block shots for us in the paint and can run the floor decently-The knicks really lack a rebounding and post defense presence and as long as we have this gap we will never pass the 2nd round. We need a center who can go 1-1 with the paul gasols, boozers, and al jeffersons of the league, and who can get use more offensive possessions with offensive rebounds.

2.A player who can create his shot off the dribble-Right now we have no one who can consistently create his own shot on the perimeter, wilson chandler really just slashes and spots up and although he is getting there,he cannot create offense out of nothing. What we need is a player who can pull up and shoot on a dime, play the post, and carry teams during mini drouts. Now a person that can do all of this and more is melo, but i agreed to not say his name but i did so oh well.

3.A bench-Right now our bench is probably the most sporadic bench in the NBA,sometimes their hot but most of the time toney and the gang cant buy a bucket, thus leaving our starters, mainly amar'e to due heavy lifting.Players that can really help our bench are guys like reggie williams with golden state, jerryd bayless with toronto, and O.J mayo with the grizzlies. We need bench players who are guaranteed to put our offense in a nice transition from the starters to the bench without going on a mega run and getting us in a deficit before the starters are ready to come in again.

Believe it or not but those are the ONLY things the knicks are lacking before becoming a true title contender.Sure there are other little things but in the grand scheme of the things if we get these players:

1.Carmelo anthony
2.marc gasol/camby
3.reggie williams/azubuike(coming back)/O.J mayo

Then your new york knicks will be a force for the next 5 years and may win a championship in that span, maybe even 2.bottom line, donnie has gotten us to the tip of the mountain all we need to do is plant the flag and we are set.

In fact, the Knicks are only one player away to become an Eastern Conference powerhouse. By that i mean one of the best four teams and a 50 wins squad. We only need another legit scorer.

But to contend for the title we need much more. We need a center, we need a defensive specialist in the backcourt, a backup pg, a pure shooter. In other words, we need depth. Right now we have 6 pieces of the puzzle (Stat, Felton, Fields, Chandler, Gallinari and Turiaf). Melo, McGee, Tony Allen, Aaron Brooks and we're done. The problem is to get all that pieces without loosing what you already have.

In the next few years, if we can develop into that, assuming Boston will be fading it's going to be a rough battle against Miami and Chicago. Maybe Orlando. Then it's a matter of luck. Winning an NBA title depends on so many little things...

We need more than one go to guy. You can't win this way in the playoffs because teams will just lock down the best player and force the role players to win the games. As of right now...our best role players are Wilson and Felton.

With the addition of another elite player (such as Mello) we have a very realistic chance at winning it all because teams wont be able to double team as much, the opposition will have a harder time figuring out who will be the go to guy.

Lets say we get Melo wouldn't it be better and more realistic to to try to get De'andre Jordan in the offseason from the clippers and bring Jerome Jordan back from Europe to fix our problems in the paint. We could probably just keep Azubuike if we think he is healing well. If not I guess go for the Mayo trade. Then trade a second rounder for a back up PG (maybe telfair since he is a pass first PG).

i like the idea of a deandre jordan very smart person for our team system wise and i do agree that we desperately need a back up pg and it makes me almost want duhon back and also as for buike i dont think he will ever really play well again, team expected him back about a month ago and i hear he is still far from returning so idk.Good idea about DJ though.

Lots of good ideas being put out in this thread but I think Donnie isn't jumping on some of these guys because he wants to have the ability to possibly go after a CP3 or DWill next year like we are working on Melo now. Telfair would be a good stopgap yes, Jordan will probably be overpaid by someone other than the Clippers assuming Sterling plays his usual self in the off season. Maybe a guy like Gadzuric would be a possibility as he might not be as sought after as the younger bigs that will be available. Honestly Jordan Hill would be someone we should have kept but who's to say if we did we would have the team we do now? Could Donnie perhaps pry one of Indiana's young bigs away from them? There are still a lot of questions that need answering but, I'm very thankful for what we currently have.

The fact that we're even this close to being a championship contender already should cheer everyone up. Nobody predicted the Knicks would be this good right now, so I wish there was a bit less negativity on these boards. Almost feels like we're so used to losing that we can't do anything but complain anymore.

keep in mind Deandre Jordan was a second round pick which means he is under the Arenas rule. All anyone can do is offer him the MLE if we get it and coax him with the ability to play in NY with some stars. I believe he could get paid more by the clippers are can can leave and play with a winning franchise.

^I know knicks fans are just really very demanding, it's a good thing. Much better then being a bunch of complacent nincompoops that think a 8-6th seed and a 1st round drumming is good enough.

I am impressed with how well the team is doing and how fast they have gelled. But there is room for improvment. We could easily crack the top 4 in the EC. ATL is falling off and Chicago is a team we know we can beat. I don't see us getting to the EC finals this year, but no one guessed the knicks would make that run in '99 either.

What is keeping us from a championship? well there's a few road blocks we'll need to surpass.

First we needed to put together a solid squad that was capable of getting to the playoffs. We've done that. We have a nice foundation with a lot of good role players, a budding star in Felton and a superstar in STAT.

Secondly we need to look at our EC rivals and figure out how to get to the finals. With Miami, Orlando and Boston being the teams to beat, we need to figure out how to stop their teams from running on us. Right now we have no answer for Miami's Defense, Orlando's paint presence and 3 point shooters, and Boston's depth.

To beat Miami, we need another star scoring threat. Melo would do, but so would Dwill or CP3. That will force them to slack off of Amar'e and open up shots for the rest of our team.

To beat Orlando: We need someone to bang with Dwight. Amar'e isn't the guy to body up dwight, we need a defensive presence, a marcus camby type. Our perimiter defense isn't that bad and as long as we have some shooters to answer back with the 3 ball we'll be ok.

To beat Boston we need that same paint presence and a solid 2nd unit that can come on the floor and compete. That means at every position there should be a legitimate player that can at least slow down the other teams players and give our guys a rest..

Then we look at western conference powerhouses and how we could beat them. The Spurs, the Lakers, and the Mavs are good measuring sticks. But if we address our issues against the best teams in the east, that will ceertainly make us competitive against any western team.

There are alot of things stopping the Knicks from being a Championship Team.

1) The Knicks are in their first rebuilding-process season.
a) the Knicks roster need at least two regular & post seasons together
to build a better player to teammate relation.... experience.

2) The Knicks dont have a strategic playoff series headcoach.
a) Dantoni is a decent assistant-coach.

3) The NBA started the 2010-11 season having 4 experience
postseason Finals teams in Lakers/ Celtics/ Spurs/ Magic.
a) with experience top contender teams being assembled in the offseason
to challenge the 4-Finals teams in.... Dallas/ OKC/ Jazz/ Heat/ Bulls/ Hawks

4) The Knicks rebuilding process started out great this season with Knick
players complimenting their teammates so well on both sides of the court
to where the Knicks went on a 20 game run performing at a 65% winning
record. The Knicks core of players out did themselves playing as a top level
NBA team.
a) are the Knicks a top contenter? hell-no!
b) the Knicks are a well put team coming together by having confidence &
trust amongst teammates to improve their winning percentage as the
season goes on.

5) The Knicks 2010-11 core of players on the roster should play out the
remainder of this season. After the playoff run management should jot
down all the missing pieces and open gaps in our playoff series to full-fill
in the 2011 offseason.
