Believing the Hype: Past Knicks who YOU overatted

New New York

Quiet Storm
OK, I gotta admit I am really excited about Iman Shumpert just like I was about Wilson Chandler and like I was about David Lee entering their rookie years.....and sadly like I was about Mardy Collins entering his second year and like I was about Anthony Randolph becoming a Knick

I mean Mardy Collins put up some decent to end his rookie season and I prematurely dubbed him the next (gulp) Derrick Harper....Blasphemy!

Anthony Randolph was going to be the next Marcus Camby....ouch!

Renaldo Balkman the next Rodman (I was really sipping the Isiah Kool Aid it would appear)

Channing Frye would be an All NBA Player one day, I thought after a strong rookie outing.

Mutumbo,Kurt Thomas and Keith Van Horn would be the best front court in The East

I gotta say I never believed in Michael Sweetney tho! and crowd out loud (literally) when I read the headline "Knicks and James have Bond" which was a play on James Bond referring to us signing Jerome James

Lastly I thought Jared Jefferies was going to be this versitile lockdown defender who would make the All Defensive first team while brining a element of continuity to our starting 5 that mostly consisted of scorers!

Anyways lets hope Shumpert turns out more David Lee and Wilson than Frye, Collins or Balkman!

Ok so I know I wasnt the only one who believed the hype, what are some of yours?

I overrated Channing Frye and Nate Robinson.

I thought Nate would gain PG skills and Channing Frye would build toughness. How wrong I was.

I thought Jordan Hill would turn out to be a nice player for us when we drafted him.

Also thought Renaldo Balkman would be a good sleeper pick & Frank Williams was our PG of the future.

An ANGRY ole Knicks-Fan

If the Knicks dont do something about their two-decades of having
a "poor-poor" coaching-staff the developement of college-players
into Pro-NBA players will stay the same.

Headcoach JVG was a decent strategic defensive-coach that related
well with his players. His biggest negative as a headcoach was developing
college level players into NBA level players.
New Yorkers who watched the outstanding performance of "Rod Strictland"
years before Strictland entered the NBA are still "wondering" how coach
JVG never had the time to give a high-profile PG-Strictland any playingtime
to build a coaches-confidence in his PG player.
Not one of the Knicks drafted players recieved any playingtime in their
rookie season under headcoach JVG.

All the Knicks drafted players mentioned above by the "POSTER" of this
thread showed great potential in college and in their rookie NBA season.
The Knicks coaching-staff after headcoach Pat Riley (1990) seemed to
always have problems getting a decent team-chemistry out of
six-Knicks-players. The Knicks has been lacking chemistry for over a decade.
Headcoach JVG recieved great jellin-chemistry from "only" three of his
players (Ewing/ Oakley/ and Starks) to have successful seasons.

In the NBA, practically the majority of young super-stars that enter
the NBA have their teams coaching-staff change within the first 3 years
of their rookie contract to advance their level of skills in the NBA.
This is a change that started in 1979 when Earvin Magic Johnson and
Larry Bird entered the NBA...... Chairman James Dolan dissaproved of
this action then, and still dissaprove of it now.

Gallo's developement into the NBA has been done backwards by the
Knicks coaching-staff.....
Charles Smith outstanding performance on the LA Clippers was the
reason why the Knicks offered Smith more $$$ than the Clippers would
when he became a FA.

Important News
President/Headcoach Pat Riley quit on the Knicks after taking the
Knicks to the FINALS.....WHY?
Was it because the Knicks only allowed Pat Riley to hire only one coach
(JVG) to the poor staff? or was it b/c the Knicks did not have a Bigman
or Guard camp? or was it G.M. Checkett getting players he wanted rather
than what the headcoach needed? or was it ........
The Knicks Organization has not change its foolish nature since 1990.

Why are all the NUCKLE-HEADS joining Knicks online lately????
I have to get back to my 9/5 to pay my bills.....I thought some
imput on our decade of not hiring any coaches for our staff like
the Mavs, Lakers, Celtics, and Spurs did would be important.

dude i don't know what the heck kiya is talking about right now. Am I high? (yes) but it's like 11:11 AM on thursday afternoon here and Kiya is tripping balls.

I will actually say this about Gallo's development as a knick. His rookie/sophmore season he was a bitch. You can chalk it up to his back issues, but the guy did not attack the basket, did not play good post defense and camped the 3pt line.

In his final stint as a Knick last season he changed. He developed his handles and his dribble got more controlled and closer to the ground, he shot better off the dribble, he drew fouls, attacked the rim, finished with authority.

I don't know if that is because he wanted to show his value to the knicks and in an attempt to stay played his ass off, but he got better while he was a knick. Development wise, who do we attribute that to?

Players I have overrated as knicks: Pretty much all of them. I still feel that ewing was a better center then shaq, david robinson, hakeem, etc. But the proof (rings) never materialized. Sprewell i also overrated as a player. I felt he could hang with the kobe's and the Ai's but in reality he was a fast break scorer and a pretty decent defender, but not an alll-NBA, MVP candidate.

Starbury. Man, the guy could ball and i thought he'd take us out of the basement but I was very, very wrong.

JVG did not coach Rod Strickland, and neither did those other guys.
