Steve Novak to join Knicks?

"Backup forward Steve Novak was waived by the Spurs on Monday, shortly before the team?s scrimmage at the AT&T Center.

Novak had been signed to a contract on Thursday. He played on the team for 23 games last season, averaging 4.0 points in 8.6 minutes per game.

His departure comes on the heels of Antonio McDyess? retirement earlier this season.

Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Novak likely is headed to New York with a guaranteed contract."

I like it. Gives Jorts and Jerome more time to mature, and Novak can really stroke the three. Will get the vet min, so we can still use the mini-MLE on Stevenson, Redd or Posey. Sign me up.

I said to sign Novak at the start of the offseason. He can shoot the 3 ball and Mike D requires this ability.

I hope we can get Posey but Novak would be nice to come off the bench and hit some 3's.

I like the idea of management.

Drafting Shumpert, signing Tyson Chandler, Baron Davis, and now Novak....good moves that address needs.

With Novak our bench won't be solid but it will be better since our style fits his game perfectly. Jack up those 3's Novak!

Doesn't this team have enough scoring? shouldn't we look to bring a defensive presence[or, someone who can score AND defend] off of the bench at the SF/PF position?:afro:

Posey would be the better fit but this helps spread the floor.

Jeffries and Balkman can play defense. We are in desperate need for a stretch 3/4 that can hit the outside shot. Shawne Williams would have filled this need. I guess Novak will cover the offensive part of that if Posey isn't signed.

Novak will definitely only get the Vets Minimum. They are still going to use the Mini-MLE, since Novak is a scoring big man. (One can hope)

I think they will go for a defensive minded swingman in Stevenson. He knows Chandler, brings a goon element, and can bring some solid defense with Shumpert and Douglas.

Also he can play either SF or SG. I think its a no brainer. Also if Balkman has another great game I would trade him while his stock is high. 2nd round pick possibly?

As much as I like Stevenson, we don't need ANOTHER guard on this team.

We need a forward.

Right now our backup PF is Jared Jeffries...we can't have that come playoff time.

We need Posey for the 2.5 mil. Or some other forward.

If we get Stevenson then your almost guaranteeing Douglas and/or Fields gets traded. It would be a log jam of guards.

I thought they already used the Mini-MLE on B. Davis? I hope we don't give Novak the 2.5. He's not worth it and it would be a smack in the face to Davis.

The New York Knicks plan to sign three-point specialist Steve Novak to a one-year deal, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Novak, a 6-foot-11 forward, does have to pass through waivers unclaimed. The Knicks would guarantee Novak a league minimum contract for the 2011-12 season.

Brought into San Antonio Spurs camp late last week, the Spurs released Novak and placed him on waivers Monday night.
Novak played 23 games for the Spurs in the 2010-?11 season, and has 225 career appearances with the Spurs, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers and Dallas Mavericks. Out of his 720 career field-goal attempts, 513 are from behind the three-point line. He?s shooting a career .417 on his three pointers.

No Davis was given the vet minimum.

It wouldn't be a smack in the face as it makes no difference to the player how much their new team signs them for. Whatever the new team pays the player is deducted from the salary that their previous team is still paying them.

Say X player is owed 15 million. Team A amnesties him. Team B signs him to a 2 million dollar contract. Team A now owes him 13 million of the 15 million.

At the end of the day the amnestied player makes the same amount regardless.

not a bad move considering he could be a good role player and stretch the floor for us I like his corner 3 ability as that will be huge for us. Now really all thats left is Stevenson or Posey and this team will be set for a run.

Agreed. What to do with Bill Walker and Balkman is the next question.

I love this move.......

A role playing big signed for a vet min who can stretch the floor and give some lights out 3pt shooting from the corner? :peace:

It was unfortunate we got spurned by Hill...then Crawford....but honestly, legit role players to surround our long-term core may be best anyways.

If we can ink Posey for the 2.5M we are ready to go to war. And while it's time to sit back and enjoy some NYK supremacy, we are good for the future, too, as next year we will surely be plugging in a quality guard or backup big.

It's going to be interesting to see how our guard situation plays out.

Davis, Bibby, Fields, Shumpert, Douglas

We need three of these men to really produce this year and be quality players for us. If we can get that, stay healthy, and MDA coaches as well as I anticipate he will, and as well as he must, I see us contending bigtime this year, right there with Chicago & Miami.

It's so nice to see the Knicks building a true contender for us to follow in this golden age of the NBA talent pool.

Steve Novak huh? Hummm... Dude can definitely stroke it but he can't really do anything else. Can't defend, can't put it on the floor, can't rebound a lick (at 6'10" too), no inside game...He's a good shooter, most definitely, I just wish he brought a little more to the table. Mike'll pick and choose exactly where to put him in. I guess he could be useful..Doesn't really remind me of Shawne Williams at all outside of the 3-pt shooting...Williams was at least a willing defender and hit the glass a little bit.

Watching the Clips/Lakers game right now --- tell me Ryan Gomes wouldn't be a perfect fit. 6'7" 245, very good inside/outside skills, can backup 3 & 4. This guy's a very underrated player. He'd be perfect. Exactly what we're looking for to a T..

I just can't understand why they refuse to look abroad to find some help..I mean instead of Steve Novak, how 'bout Rob Kurz? Remember this guy? 6'10" former Notre Dame Irishman, had a cup of coffee with the GS Warriors a few yrs ago and played well for them before being waived. I think I remember him with the Cavs too for a little bit...Like Novak he's a 6'10" guy that can shoot 3s but at least this guy can also rebound the basketball. Kinda reminded me of Troy Murphy a little bit, another former Irishman. I mean this guy's currently playing in Spain somewhere...He'd be a much better fit than Novak imho. Novak just doesn't do enough. He's a specialist in ever sense of the word..One-dimensional is a better description...I still say Jamelle Horne and Ryan Wittman are 2 excellent shooters that fit this system perfectly. They're both 2/3s though -- I take it they're more interested in adding a 3/4 type.

Ahh, what's the use man..They're only looking at talent right in front of them in the US. You figure H2O should have some good opinions on D-League talent now for a change..That'll be a nice switch..All we need now are talent evaluators for the Euro players...I say hire Fran Fraschilla..That guy knows the Euro players better than anyone. The Knicks' scouting department, esp. the team in charge of Euro. scouting, leaves a lot to be desired imho...

If they're dead set against looking abroad and just wanna focus on the FA pool of NBA vets looking for work, how about Al Thorton? He fits that backup 3/4 mold, kinda like Gomes. I like Gomes' game a little more (he's more polished with deeper jumpshooting range), but this guy ain't bad...Good athlete and he doesn't have a bad mid-range game..Just a thought.

Good, I hope we get him. We get a player that is basically the same as Shawne Williams except we don't have to use the room exception to get him. If we get him, posey, and Baron gets healthy this season will be awesome.
