The Bigger Picture

The Knicks will never be close to contending for an NBA Championship as long as James Dolan is the owner of the team.

He does not have a basketball mind running his basketball team. If he just sits back and doesn't worry about big names and over hyped commodities, i.e. Mike D'Antoni, and let a real General Manager or President of Basketball Operations run this team and build a team the way it should be built we will never be good.

Dolan is running this franchise into the ground while making a fortune off of them. We have a great foundation in Anthony, Stoudemire, Chandler and Shumpert and all we need to do is fill in this team with legit role players and a coach who can make it work. It doesn't have to be Phil Jackson, it can be an unknown coach who has a great track record as an assistant. Scott Brooks, Tom Thibodeu guys like that should be given a chance.

Dolan is all about the headlines but all we do is make a big splash in the off season and get shit on all year long by the media because as long as Dolan's bank account is increasing per game he's fine.

I really think fans who attend games should begin to boycott games and not tune into MSG to watch games. Send this muthafcuker a message that this isn't what we want.

Dolan should really sell this team, unlikely as it may be I really hope he just wakes up one day and decides he doesn't want a part of this. I want the media to harass him every waking moment of his life til he folds and just puts the team up for sale. Donald Trump will jump at the opportunity to buy the Knicks, hell even if the team was publicly owned like the Green Bay Packers it'd be even better.

James Dolan is a plague and is making me hate watching basketball. I watch every other team and see what we should be. He's a horrible owner, hired a horrible coach, made a horrible decision by not keeping our best GM ever and will continue to be horrible until the day he dies

end rant

Or a certain player wearing No 7. Let's face it we were much better before the trade. The man should just have led Donnie get things done. Another decade of being the biggest koke in the league is ahead of us.

you are an idiot as bad as we are now, we were only 2 games above .500 before the trade. No one we let go is as good as the players we have

Carmelo Anthony
Tyson Chandler

are the 2 guys we essential got because of the trade

Iman Shumpert
Josh Harrellson

we our 2 draft picks which fit great with STAT, CA7 and TC6

So essentially

Anthony, Chandler, Shumpert and Harrellson>>>>Gallinari, Chandler, Mozgov and Felton

D'Antoni cant adjust to personnel and James Dolan only hired him because of name value. What coach cant adjust his "system" to his current players.

Blame Melo all you want, he's our best player and was well worth the trade

We were 28-26 the day the trade was made.

This is about sentiment and sentiment only. Two of the players involved in the trade are no longer with Denver, and Denver hasn't skipped a beat. I'm inclined to look at the coach and give him the nod for their success.

Denver was always at the top of the NBA in points in the paint, and free throws. It's George Karl's preferred style of basketball.

I guess before the trade we were at least 2 games above .500? Is that what you're saying?

We are 21-30 after the trade. So technically he's right. We were better. You are what your record says you are.

It can all be summed up by the following:

Denver got better after the trade.

The Knicks got worse after the trade.

Denver got a few young players that are still improving (with Wilson Chandler to rejoin the team in March). So they are going to keep getting better just based on the player we gave them.

Denver still has our first round draft pick for 2014 to bring in another good player.

Only an idiot wouldn't admit that Denver killed us in that trade!

And that doesn't even mention that we could have just used Eddy Curry's cap space to add Chandler to that old squad (perhaps having to move Turiaf the way we did) and still had Randolph as a trade asset.

Dumbest trade in the history of the NBA! It was obvious before the trade, but that some people can't even admit it now when a dead man should be able to see it suggests that some people are in extreme denial and refuse to admit they were wrong.

Actually, we would have had $18 mil in cap space, even keeping Turiaf (another expiring contract). We could have signed Chandler and still would have had another $4 mil to spend. Or spent the $18 mil on other pieces, or used it in a sign and trade for CP3 and Okafur, or sign-and-trade Wilson Chandler, or resigned him (who probably never would have gone to China if he was still a Knick). There were a plethora of options and I can think of a million different scenarios that could have made this team better. Too many people thought Melo was the be all and end all for the Knicks chances to compete.

Eddy Curry's expiring deal would have given us 13mil to work with. Wilson was a RFA so if we signed Tyson there's no Wilson because we'd have to renounce his rights.

And stop with that shit, talent wise that team isn't better

Why doesn't Dolan look at signing Gilbert Arenas? We can't score and we're shooting 30 3's a game, why not get a proven 3 point shooter?

No, we had Curry and Azibuike coming off the books for almost $18 mil. We could have retained Wilson's rights and still signed Tyson. We had the cap space to sign Melo to a max contract in the offseason had he not demanded to be traded as well.

Talent isn't everything in the NBA, it needs to match. The old team + $18 mil in cap space is a hell of a lot better than what we're suck with now. We had a multitude of options to build a contender.

Look no further than MIA last year. Who struggled mightily to even be a .500 team for a portion of the year. There was legitimate chatter of "could they possibly miss the playoffs?".

That was with a full off-season together, Chris Bosh as their #3, and having 2 of the best 3 players in the entire NBA, one of whom is as good a non-PG playmaker as this game has ever seen.

Lebron himself took a team of the scrubs to the NBA finals and contended year in year out.

He was then paired up with Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh....and they struggled and looked *worse* as a team than Lebron + that Cavs squad for quite some time.

Doesn't work like that with RFA. If you have 10mil in cap space and you have a RFA but want to sign a UFA you can only sign 1. Thats why if we signed Amar'e and say Joe Johnson we would have had to renounce David Lee's rights.

People kept saying we should have waited til the off season for Melo but what you forget is Wilson Chandler's rights would have been renounced. Some of you guys dont know shit about how the cap works and just throw numbers out of your ass.

Without Melo there's no Tyson.......so if you want the old team back go to Denver and cheer for them. If not shut the fcuk up about Melo and watch when we get a coach who can coach talented players and not depend on a bunch of guys running and shooting jumpers all day. If you think Melo is a bigger problem than D'Antoni then your as big of an idiot as he is

But now Miami has the role players that fit and their coach developed a system to play to their strengths. Why do people wanna blow up our big 3, just surround them with guys who fit, fcuk name value. Just get tough minded glue guys and a no non-sense coach

This is incorrect. You can sign a UFA while still having a RFA, if you have the cap space, which we did. To retain a player's Bird Rights, it counts as 1.5 * the player's final year of salary against the cap. Wilson's final year salary was $2.13 mil. Therefore it would have cost us $3.195 mil against our cap space. We had roughly $18 mil in cap space (Curry and Azubuike coming off the books). We signed Tyson for $14 mil. $14 mil + $3.195 mil left us enough to sign Tyson and Wilson.

Maybe you should think twice about insulting people and calling them idiots when you don't even know the facts yourself.

There's no way Wilson's cap number would be 3.195, he's signing a whole new contract unless he only took the Qualitying offer of 3.195, but he would of been locked up long term so his cap number is whatever his extension says it is. If a team like say New Jersey offers him 9mil per the Knicks with the new CBA rules have 3 days to match it meaning either he walks in 3 days or they match it then signing Chandler, so Chandler's 14mil plus whatever we would sign Wilson for say 9mil thats 23mil, having only 18mil cap space means we dont have room for both. If we sign Wilson 1st, then we only got 9mil to work with, who do we get with that, signing Chandler 1st at 14mil leaves 4mil, the only way Wilson comes back is for the QO, which he wouldn't

This I do agree with pretty much 100%.

I honestly don't think Melo and Amare are unable to "co-exist".

If anything, I think they could play together and be individually great and be even more effective as a "duo", than as individuals.

You can go over the cap to resign your restricted free agents. For 1st-round draft picks, restricted free agency is only allowed after a team exercises its option for a fourth year, and the team makes a Qualifying Offer at the Rookie-scale amount after the fourth year is completed. The QO is made to make a player restricted so it would have been given, regardless. What you said previously, that a team cannot sign a UFA and a RFA was incorrect.

Remember in the summer of 2010 when analyst were saying the only way the Knicks can sign both James and Stoudemire is to renounce David Lee's rights, the reason is we were over the cap so David Lee's cap number already figured on the cap, his new contract value would increase his cap number, meaning the 11mil he makes per year counts against our cap. We had 33mil in space, David Lee's 11mil takes away the from the 33mil, 22mil, room for STAT and Felton.

Also as for waiting for Melo in Free Agency negated re-signing Wilson Chandler because of both of their cap numbers. So its either Wilson or Melo, letting go of Felton and bringing back Billups was no big deal, losing Mozgov didn't matter we got Jerome Jordan. We lost Anthony Randolph but got back Corey Brewer so essentially the trade was Anthony/Billups/Brewer for Felton/Gallinari/Randolph/Mozgov not a bad deal in retrospect. of course we let go of Billups and Brewer which sucks but nonetheless the deal isn't as bad as guys make it seem
