List of Free Agents for the Summer of 2012

Starter
I posted this since as of 6/22/2012 the Knicks have enough cap room that this list actually matters

http://www.hoopsworld.com/2012-nba-free-agents

Players marked with an asterisk are not on rookie scale contracts (for former first-round picks) but are eligible for restricted free agency as a player with three years or less of NBA experience. Players finishing their rookie scale contracts are marked as restricted until decided otherwise and their Qualifying Offer is listed. Teams needed to officially issue that Offer by June 30, 2012, to make the player restricted.

I bolded the players I found interesting. Obviously the Knicks should try to keep their players and I know the clear choice of an offseason acquisition would be Nash. However he's teased coming here before and the rumor is the Knicks aren't even front runners http://www.sportsnet.ca/basketball/2012/06/22/nash_three_team_shortlist/

So in my mind if that happens the Knicks should go with the Ray/Ray plan Raymond Felton (future Backup PG) and Ray Allen (outside 3 pt shooter to ease the load on Novak)

also I think Shannon Brown could be the steal price wise in comparison to production this year and Robin Lopez could be a really cheap decent backup center.

Pending this bird rights ruling stays in our favour and we resign Lin, Novak, Jeffries & Fields, I think a few things need to happen.

Our biggest need is to strengthen our back court, and if we are being realistic, our Full MLE will be needed to secure a backup PG while our Bi-Annual will be needed to bolster the SG spot.

I really think Nash is a pipe dream at this point, and my preference for backup Pg's would be 1. Miller and 2. Felton, both of these are pretty realistic for the MLE. We really need a solid backup PG and despite what most people think, Douglas had some solid games under Woodson last season.
A PG rotation of Lin - Miller/Felton - Douglas is vastly improved from last year.

Shump will probably take till feb/march to be back to his form and funnily enough I think it is possible for us too become too stacked at the SG position later in the season. Unless Ray Allen is willing to come for the Bi-Annual let's give him a pass. Deshawn Stevenson could be had for that money and provides great defense and above average 3pt shooting. By keeping Fields he can get some minutes at the SG but also share the backup SF duties with Novak.

I really don't think back up center is that big of a need, sure it would be great so grab Camby. But Stat should see some time at center with Chandler on the bench to fully utilise his scoring, Jeffries & Stat can alternate between the PF/C positions when Chandler is sitting.

Either way a lineup of:

Lin - Miller/Felton - Douglas
Stevenson - Smith - Shump - Fields
Melo - Novak - Fields
Amare - Jeffries - Novak
Chandler - Jeffries - JJ

Has us set for a solid run next year.

Fill in needs

We have to address needs this year

Pay for another 2nd round pick!

I believe we have to lock up atleast two decent point guards this off season.

The ideal scenerio for PG would be to draft one guy like Scott Machado or Darius Johnson-Odom....then sign someone like Jason Kidd or Andre Miller as our backup with the draft pick as our 3rd string so we don't have Toney Douglas ballhandling anymore

The biggest need is outside shooting, The Heat won the championship because of guys like Battier, Miller and Chalmers knocking down outside shots.

This is where a draft prospect like Kim English and/or free agents like Ray Allen and Shannon Brown can be useful. We need players to spread the floor for Lin, Melo and Amare to drive to the hoop.

I lost my confidence in Landry Fields and I believe JR Smith will sign the player option. Fields does not help spread the floor, therefore he is useless on this team.

For the forward position I would like someone from the draft like Kevin Jones, he averaged 10.9 rebounds and 4.3 offensive rebounds a game.

Needs in order:

Backup PG
SG that is an outside threat
Forward that can bring hustle and rebounding, a younger version of Jared Jeffries

Terrel Harris could be a good option for a spark off the bench should J.R. opt out. Great perimeter defense, can hit the outside shot, good shooter of balance, etc.

If Nash is not attainable I wouldn't mind Jason Kidd as an alternative PG option, even at his age. I don't think DeShawn Stevenson is the right choice for this team, he really is not a good shooter (career 33% from beyond the arc) & is more of a spot up guy, not someone who can run off screens to get open shots.

We need someone who can consistently knock down an open J in order to be able to spread the floor to open passing & penetrating lanes for guys like Lin & Melo. Ray Allen is perfect because he gets himself open by running his man off screens all the time. We need guys who can play off the ball who won't just stand around twiddling their thumbs while Lin & Melo have the ball in their hands.

Alan Hahn is saying its unlikely the Knicks can afford to go after Steve Nash, JR Smith will likely remain on the Knicks and he confirms the Knicks do in fact have $3 Million in cash considerations this year to make moves.

http://www.msg.com/blogs/alan-hahn/...association-win-in-court-has-huge-linpac.html

Hahn says the following:

[Technically, the Knicks could use the full MLE, but it would be a great risk. Why? Because if they are held at the instituted hard cap, they can not add any more players for the entire 2012-13 season. This means if a player is injured, you can not sign a free agent to a veteran's minimum or even a D-League player to a 10-day contract.]

Instead, expect the Knicks to go with the $3 million tax-payer MLE, which would not trigger the $4 million apron and hard cap. It would allow them to sign a free agent at $3 million, use the $1.9 million bi-annual to sign another player and still have the luxury of adding as many veteran's minimum contracts as they please throughout the season. Trust me, this matters, especially when a player is amnestied or waived after the trade deadline.

I guess Nash is pretty much out of the question, & I would highly doubt Ray Allen would be interested for a $3 million dollar deal either (unless he just relishes the opportunity to go after the Heat next year on a stacked Knicks' squad, but I would picture him re-signing in Boston unless we could offer him more than $3M).

That may leave us with Jason Kidd or Ray Felton as the next options for PG, & possibly add a dirty work player like a Kenyon Martin or Reggie Evans to shore up our frontcourt for the $1.9M BAE (I'm really not keen on the idea of bringing back Jared Jeffries, he really has no skills to offer this team other than taking a charge every now & then). We need someone who can add some more toughness to this team, add a little bit of edge, & be 1 of those players that get under the skin of the players on the other team.

This is why I also look forward to seeing if Glen Grunwald and his crafty group can come up with another Tyson Chandler-type plan, using some of the other assets on this team. Consider the value in Landry Fields ($2.6 million qualifyer), Toney Douglas' expiring contract ($2 million) and non-guaranteed money in Dan Gadzuric ($1.3 million), Josh Harrellson ($762,195) and Jerome Jordan ($762, 195).

If a team is looking to sell and take nothing back, the Knicks have the pieces, plus $3 million in cash considerations, to put on the table.

That's in addition to everything else. I don't know if it can be used in a sign and trade but if not maybe the Knicks can in fact buy there way into the first round this year. The Thunders 28th pick is up for grabs since rumor is the Thunder do not want to have to pay for a late draft pick who likely wont get playing time. Hell Reggie Jackson was drafted at 24 for them and can't break into their regular rotation.

But yeah Nash is a stretch and I am not sure Felton deserves the 3 Mil MLE he really under performed in a contract year and wasn't in shape.

Actually I think Ray Allen is gone the Celtics are focused on trying to keep KG (and hopefully will overpay him) and it seems Ray has been having issues with Rondo off the course all season. Along with Avery Bradley being the better 2 guard there he lost his starting spot. Also not for nothing Ainge has been trying to trade him for about 2 seasons.

NY would be a good place for him he would be a rotation player here with good minutes and his ability to effective without the ball would be great. We also know Spike Lee is in his ear right now trying to sell him on coming to NY.

Get me Nash, Gee and Asik out of that list and I'm loving it. Bring back JR and burn Fields unless he signs for between $1 & 1.5M. We need a sniper at the 2, but I don't want Ray Allen because he's terminally infected with Celtic gaylorditis.

Our window of opportunity needs to be addressed active immediately. Next year is enormous for us.

I think we should shoot for a lineup like this now ..

Lin/Nash/draft pick
Shump/J.R./Fields
Melo/Novak
STAT/Odom/Jeffries
Chandler/Harrellson/Jordan

dump TD.
J.R. - $2.5 or $2.9 option if he opts out.
Fields,Lin,Novak - up to $5 mil with birdie$.
Nash / Odom - tie remaining exceptions with them .
Jeffries - vet min

all thats left is getting a good draft pick
then there's 1 more spot left using the vet min.

opinions... ?

I still say a guy we should be looking at is Patty Mills. He's got the player option to stay with SA for a million bucks but I don't think he's too enamoured with that situation out there. Yeah they're a championship ball club and all but as long as Tony Parker's there making the big bucks I don't ever see him getting the shot he needs to show what he can do. Plus they drafted a decent PG to be Parker's backup last summer in Cory Joseph (well before they brought in Mills) and I'm sure they're interested in bringing Gary Neal back who Pop likes a lot & trusts with the ball in spurts..Mills could find himself the 4th option if he decides to go back there. Very similar situation to the one he was in in Portland where it felt like he was always behind 2 or 3 other PGs.

Mills barely got any time at all in the playoffs -- and this was after he had 2 monster games for the Spurs running the point to close out the regular season. He'd be a great backup for Lin in my opinion. Still very young, cat quick, quality outside shooter and he's a better passer that he's given credit for. The man can score, push a lightning-quick pace, penetrate, finish and distribute. I think he's worth about $3M a yr myself and I'm not sure SA would offer him that amount of money to stay. I'd offer this guy a deal in the vicinity of 3 yrs/$9M to see if I could pry him away from the Spurs. I think he'd be worth it -- with about 15-20 mins a night, this guy will produce. Now that we won the Bird rights case (appeal permitting), I say we make a run at this kid. We might not be able to get Nash or a guy like Dragic for $3M per, but maybe we could grab Mills for that amount or less (maybe closer to $2M a yr gets it done)..

I read somewhere that Lamar Odom has begun to have talks with the Clippers about contract negotiations, so he may be an unrealistic target. Personally I think if we can nab a back up PG for the MLE (more on that soon), we use our Bi-Annual on Kenyon Martin.

Apparently it didn't work out too well for him in Clipperland and he may not be returning, Clippers will also probably prefer to sign Reggie Evans for cheaper. He would be a great backup for Amare and would turn our frontcourt into a defensive force all over. He is a very versatile defender and will rebound & hustle his heart out, he could also see minutes as the back up C.

On the point guard front I think we need to realise Nash isn't going to come for the 3 Million, Kidd should be our main target. He fits this team much better and doesn't need the offense to run through him to be effective. Andre Miller will probably fetch more money elsewhere so I think we could use Felton as our Plan B backup pg.

I don't know how reliable this site is but they have the Knicks top choices as being amongst either OJ Mayo, Jason Terry, or Ray Allen. OJ Mayo probably would be good to have in the long term, however he is restricted. In this new CBA however he could very likely end up only making about 3 million since his production has fallen off. As for Jason Terry if the Mav's let him walk (IE if they get Deron Williams) I would be surprised if he isn't offered more than the 3 Million, then again he is not that much different than Jamal Crawford game wise and he is a $3 million dollar player in this new CBA.

http://www.iamagm.com/news/2012/06/...sh.list?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

In all likelihood though signs point to the list just being a combination of smoke screen and covering basis as the Knicks go about trying to get Ray Allen to come to NY (do not underestimate the power of Spike Lee to charm players to come to NY and he is cool with Allen). The article says its between the Heat, Bulls, and Knicks. I think we have one up on the Bulls since next year Rose is gone for the majority of the season. So it comes down to the Heat and the Knicks.

With that said I think the Knicks would be the best move for him. On the heat he would be a lot lower on the depth chart than in NY. Landry could see more minutes at the 3 behind Melo and with Shump out until Jan the majority of minutes at the 2 would be between him and JR. Whereas he would have to play behind Wade/Battier for his minutes.

Whereas he would have to play behind Wade/Battier for his minutes.
i was reading up on this yesterday it's reliable site, it's just our "wish list" though. It seems like we are targeting a SG with the MLE come free agency time, which is a smart move since Shump probably wont be available until February the latest.

OJ Mayo took me by surprise he would be a interesting pickup i highly doubt we can afford him though, same for jason terry i think they'll be looking for more money. I believe J.Terry already expressed his desire to be paid more (hint wanted long term deal with mavericks or he said he's gone.)

ray allen is probably the most realistic option for the Knicks, his options are heat, Knicks and Bulls.. with rose being out majority of the season i cant really see him going to the bulls

Ray allen in a heat uniform i really cant picture that one unless he desperately wants another ring, he's a big upgrade over miller off the bench but is that what ray allen really wants to do? playing limited amount of time behind Dwayne wade?.

I would think the Knicks are the front runners for Ray allen, We can guarantee him a starting Job at the SG position and + ray and spike lee are cool with each other, i cant say were closer to getting a championship than the heat or bulls because were realistically not until we prove we can dominate games no matter who we play, but adding Ray allen i think would put us over top, thats all this team really needs is a consistent knock down threat at the SG position that spreads the floor for us and who better than ray allen? this gives Melo more room to operate and gives more room for lin to operate. Novak + Ray allen?? No reason in hell we shouldn't have the best 3 point percentage in the NBA.

Agreed, I would be down for both KMart & J Kidd if we can't land Nash & Ray Allen. We need to add some toughness to this team & Kidd is still a very good orchestrator & can knock down an open 3. He's also open to playing backup to Jeremy Lin, something I highly doubt Steve Nash is open to.
