Think Prig is too much of a non scoring threat to allow him to play long stretches. He should be in there to keep the offense flowing and to keep up the ball movement bu i think Woody overplayed him tonight.

Finally a coach who knows when to take a timeout. And can actually design a play and execute off of one. Really makes a difference.

The Ascension of Mike Woodson

Mike Woodson has always been known as a defensive specialist but the year he spent under D'antoni has made him an all around coach on the verge of being elite. Woodson managed to extract the virtues of D'antonis offense, make it more efficient and combine it with his own defense leading to dominant play on both ends of the court. This evolution can't be overstated enough. As a result, the Knicks are off to their best start since 93.

We have a deep talented roster with a legit superstar and strong, well rounded coach. Sky's the limit boys!

Very good points, he, like everything else Knicks, gets criminally underrated. I have seen noticeable improvements in his ability to influence the game through substitutions and his selection of time outs.

I love the bond he has with JR, and rewards him with extra minutes for good play. 5 straight good games on both ends of the floor and across the board for JR is doing wonders for the team flow and JR's confidence.

Think he is playing Sheed a tad too much atm and I would love to see Camby get more time. He still needs time to adjust obviously but Woodson seems to be managing the minutes marvellously.

He has definitely improved since the last team he coached. I was afraid at first of what our offense would look like because before he was a very boring, iso ball type guy. But his offense scheme now looks much better

He did clearly take a few pointers from D'Antoni, but luckily just the good things. Like floor spacing, ball sharing, etc. A lite D'antoni scheme on offense infused with disciplined hard nosed defense and we are looking at like the best set up in the league right now lol

Does that mean we should beat the Lakers? :teeth:

He's been under the tutelage of some great basketball minds throughout his basketball tenure.

I'm sure he's learned a lot, and now has a roster deep enough and talented enough to implement his own version of what he's learned, and created on his own.

A great opportunity for all involved.

How responsible is Woodson for JR Smith's current state of mind and play?

I'd given thought to this over the first few games, as JR has made it apparent that he's taking this season seriously. On both ends of the floor he's been relentless, patient, focused (comparatively with his former loose behaviour) and shown not only control, but desire in abundance.

● I then read this, just now - Woodson speaking of JR's professionalism.

Woodson said Smith is surging in all areas. Last spring, Woodson got on Smith about wearing his ?sagging?? jeans ? a hip-hop look in which his underwear shows ? to the arena. There was Smith late Tuesday night in the visiting locker room in Orlando, donning a suit, his baby daughter in his arms, showing her off to teammates.

?You see how he dresses when he comes to the games now,?? Woodson said Wednesday. ?He looks very professional. He?s in a suit. It?s beautiful to see, man. That?s not to say he doesn?t wear jeans and do some of things he was doing. That?s a start. I like everything about him. There?s something there I like. I?m going to make sure he?s successful.??

So, in accordance with the thread title, just how influential has Woodson been with JR, and just how successful can JR be under the tutelage and guidance of the stern but fair Mike Woodson? We've all spoken of his immense potential, but is this just a forebear of amazing things to come from this enigmatic question mark?

Woodson Runs Laps If Knicks Have Less Than 13 TOs.

How can you not love this guy?

The Knicks lead the league in fewest turnovers per game. Woodson has installed a turnover contest within the team. Any time the club commits fewer than 13, the coaches have to run laps. He did it his final two seasons with Atlanta, with assistant Jim Todd coming up with the brainstorm. The Knicks have committed less than 13 turnovers in four of the five games. The one game they didn't the total was just one over - 14.
?We ended up leading the league in not turning the ball (over) that one season (in Atlanta),?? Woodson said. ?The coaches did a lot of running.??

Fully!

Woodson is a great mentor for JR Swish. JR has been Phenominal this season and im glad JR is listening in to what coach is telling him.

Ummm... Everything? JR respects Woodson as a coach and Woodson respects JR as a player. Their relationship almost has a father/son feel to it. If Woodson can get JR's basketball I.Q. where his physical talent is JR's future will be looking very bright.

I absolutley think Mike Woodson is responsible for channeling JR Smith's emense talent. He is a former McDonalds All-American who has never quite lived up to his hype.

When you enter the league at 18 or 19 you are probably feeling as if you are entitled to something. When you get to a team and your not starting or playing at that age it takes a toll on you. Byron Scott and George Karl gave up on the guy too early which makes some people give up on team play which is not right. Mike Woodson from Day 1 realized what he had in JR I feel he would have found similar strengths in Anthony Randolph for what its worth.

Great coaches find ways to make good players play hard or great for them. :2cents:

Scott and Karl were just not the right kind of coaches for JR. neither his play style or personality mixed well with those guys.

In Woodson he's found a more kindred spirit. And it's clear that Woodson likes JR (he's said as much last season too). It doesn't hurt that the team as a whole goes to battle for Woodson and each other. It's a great team dynamic right now. It's funny what a bit of team bonding time and winning will do for chemistry.

JR is a great player. a starting caliber player. He's got a lot of talent and skills and with this new focused mindset he is poised for great things. I think he brings this team deep this year and I pray he chooses to stay with the knicks next year as well.

I love it. I've really changed my opinions on JR and give much of that credit to Woodson. I'm working on a short article about this at the moment. JR & Woody deserve to be highlighted
