Plea to the Knicks: Trade Novak

We?re paying a guy 4 million dollars who has no impact on the game whatsoever. His value comes in the form of 3pt makes and he?s only giving us about 2 of those a game and that number gets even smaller in the postseason. I?m just not sure why we need to keep a guy on the bench who can only do one thing; and that one thing can be mitigated by just staying in front of him. Game 2 was a perfect example of how his value is nullified too easily to justify his salary. Sometime in the 3rd quarter with a double digit lead, Woodson decides to play Novak. This quickly leads to a Celtics 6-0 run and Novak is immediately replaced. Keep in mind that the shots were made by Crawford, who was being loosely guarded by NOVAK!

I just don?t see why the FO can?t put Novak on the trading block and see what offers we get. I mean we don?t need his two 3s per game to be good. Hell, he?s really only effective against the crappy teams anyway. I?d be just fine replacing him with a 35% 3 point shooter and tough defender with slashing ability. He?s also the reason why JR Smith will want at least 6-7 mil as a base salary next season. I?m sure we can deal with a team loaded with PGs SF or PFs.

For those of you who adore Novak, I employ you to think about our real needs. A stand still sometimes knock down shooter isn?t one of them. Sure, in a Dantoni system he?s fine but this version of the Knicks have gone back to their roots and are defensive minded. The Celtics don?t even use Courtney Lee. I?d trade Novak for him in a second!

indeed he is just task man playing no D catching stupid fouls but he can be still needed.

I think he need just to be coached no one simply care for him as he plays just garbage minutes

but he still can shoot ft's which are most important part of even games.

I have to agree with you. He is a terrible defender, and now that i think of it i would say he's one of the worst defenders i've ever seen. He's only effective when they run plays for him (which woody didn't do at all this year). I wouldn't mind dumping him and picking someone up who actually can guard other players.

Other than shooting 3's, he can also stretch the floor.

Thats about it, I have nothing else nice to say about him LOL

Lol

I know his poor showing last night provided the impetus for this.

You already know my stance on this:

Rule #1 if you can't guard your man at minimum you don't play. I don't care if you can go 100 for 100 from half court.

You see everyone forgets their playoff mentality until Apr - Jun. Then the magnifying glass comes out, and now people see what I was saying (because I'm always in playoff mode)- and just as you said he comes in and we go down 6. Not the end of the world but 6 points in the playoffs mind as well be 12. That's how important every possession is.

He's useless; it's like 5 on 4 with him in. The sad thing is after noticing this last year you'd think he could improve by now.

keep up the real talk.

I woulda loved that Brewer/Novak for Metta Ron Peace deal that some of u were talking about earlier in the season.

Peace would give maxed out physicality, Id love to see him playing at the 4 for us

I don't understand how he gets a second of time on that floor during the playoffs. Cope should get all his minutes

This is the postseason, Woody suppose to know his players strength & weakness
Novak is useless in a ISO offense, and man to man defense

Well Boston are good at running you off the 3pt line and guarding Crawford with Novak is a joke so just taking that specific example I'd disagree. Game was in hand, sure we took a timeout and adjusted and put the brakes on them but we were never in a position to lose that game.

I'm sure Novak would have his uses as the playoffs continue. I just dunno who we could get for Novak that would be as useful as him. He spreads the floor, keeps his defender honest and when he plays PF he keeps his man out of the paint and frees up the lane.

I don't really expect a whole lot more from the 10th/11th guy on the roster.

AGREED! most playoff teams play good D, that's how they got there.
nullifying Novakaine's 3-pt shooting makes him useless.
trade him, free up some dough and sign JR next year.

Good point .. we are not playing Novak to his best talents, which is providing Novak with a decent pick/screen to go around for a catch n shoot play (this was the design-play for so many famous peremeter shooters before and after the 3-point line was put in the NBA). When we do this play 3 to 5 times per game with Novak, oponents will put their 2nd best defender on Novak during a series, which would stop the double-teams on Melo, or JR, or Felton's slashing.

This is more on coaching than Novak. Now with every possession valued as gold, do you set up a play for Novak or allow your 1 and 2 options to fire it up when open. That's the question Woodson is answering. Novak is a specialist at this point, nothing more. The guy can blow open a game with 3 3's, but he can also shoot you out of a game, miss the 3, then his man scores on a drive and a and one. During Dallas' run, there was one game where Peja shot the lights out, I think it was against LA, and he could not miss, it became contagious....that was what one game out of 21 total playoff games for Dallas.

I agree if Novakaine doesn't have the best 3pt % year in and year out he's a liability.

Last year he was numero uno, this year 10th which doesn't make up for his lack of D, specialist role and limited minutes.

Every team needs a 3 pt specialist but the Knicks overpaid for one with that contract of his.

There are times when we need a 3-ball shot with design-screen-plays during a time-out that has less than 8 seconds on the shot-clock .. these are plays that a contender team have written-up for their top 3-ball shooter (Novak), not their star scorers .. everytime we are in this type of situation we just get the ball in Melo's hand, if Melo's not available JR's hands, where Melo & JR always want to dribble around a pick ........

I watch Golden State coach Mark Jackson write-up 8 different 3-ball design plays where Stephen Curry came around screens to catch n shoot to score a career high 54 points shooting 11-13 3-ball shots in MSG.
Woodson has not run a moving without the ball double-screens for Novak to go around for a catch n shoot once since becoming the Knicks headcoach.
We all should remember the double-screens Tyson/Jefferies/ or Fields would set for Novak during the Linsanity era.
