Hire Tom Thibodeau

Next season, keep waiting
There's a youtube video out there that shows Tibs ran elements of the triangle offense in Chicago. I'm surprised no one is talking about this, but pieces of the offense could be retained under Tibs.

Commitment may be the issue under the Knicks. Fisher didn't run anything close to the triangle and that seems to be the offense of choice. Love it or hate it you can't do it half assed. I would not be heartbroken if Rambis stayed on for another year. It wont matter ether way if we can't get better players.

Is Melo scoring outside of Isolation plays? Seems like that can be stifling to the offense.

The more I read the more I think PJ is going with Rambis, it's going to take someone really special to dislodge Rambis as the leading candidate for the next head coach.

Rambis said Tuesday that management would hunt for players who fit the system. If Rambis is retained, he likely will change the coaching staff and remove the Oklahoma City influence of Brian Keefe, Joshua Longstaff and David Bliss, each brought in by Derek Fisher. That segment of the staff seemed to want to break away from a full-blown triangle, with Jackson hinting at that after firing Fisher.

Rambis would retain former Lakers assistants Jim Cleamons and Rasheed Hazzard, the son of UCLA great Walt Hazzard. According to a source, Rambis would consider adding former Laker Rick Fox. Brian Shaw would also make sense as an associate head coach, but if Rambis sticks, Jackson could demand a defensive specialist added to the coaching staff.
After the finale against the Pacers, Rambis, who finished 9-19 as the interim, said, “Whatever’s going to happen is going to happen. I’m not going to worry about it. I want to be the head coach here. But that’s a decision out of my hands.’’
Rambis is riding the notion his presence allows his buddy Jackson to be more hands-on. Anthony admitted after Fisher got fired that Jackson “talked to more guys individually.’’
Anthony also said Rambis emphasized more spirited scrimmages. Anthony wants Jackson to interview other candidates, but seems to be softening.
“It was good to get those practices in,’’ Anthony said. “Guys wanted to compete. We were competing when we had Fish. It was a different type of competition in practice with Kurt. He really was like, ‘We’re going to practice.’ ’’

There are ways to make this work like hiring Rambis as the lead ass't to run the triangle and hire Thibs as the HC and defensive coordinator. D'Antoni did it with him running the SSOL offense and Woody as the defensive coordinator.

Phil just likes Rambis which is going to count as much as the coaching credentials in who he hires. Rambis doesn't deserve it based on his audition but I don't think PJ gives a damn just like he doesn't give a damn about critics of the triangle.

Interesting that JVG and Thibs are interviewing for the same job.

Supposedly Thibs wants full control like SVG has in Detroit. Didn't read the same for JVG, sounding like he would only coach but would want a GM he could work with.

Interesting that the Wolves are actually making savvy decisions going through a more comprehensive coaching search process and not only interviewing guys they hung out at high school with like the Knicks.

Like I said JVG doesn't call Phil Big Chief Triangle for nothing. Still he hasn't hired anyone, maybe he surprises and hires someone outside of the Triangle Mafia.

Teams have been active in hiring new coaches. Nets hire Kenny Atkinson, Suns hire Earl Watson, Woody interviewing with Sactown, JVG and Thibs interviewed with MN, Mark Jackson will be also. Wiz rumored to want Brooks. Not sure what PJ's plan is but I'm not impressed, dragging his feet only means that guys he may want are going to have other jobs.

Thibs signs with Timberwolves

It was a longshot that he was coming here and now you can scratch him off Phils list.

Tom Thibodeau is finalizing a five-year deal to become president of basketball operations and head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves, league sources told The Vertical. San Antonio Spurs assistant general manager Scott Layden is working on a deal to join Thibodeau as general manager, league sources said.
Thibodeau emerged as the frontrunner in pursuit of the job in recent days, selling owner Glen Taylor on his vision of sustained success and playoff basketball in Minnesota, league sources said.
Thibodeau has been drawn to the full control of the organization and the chance to coach a talented young core that includes rookie center Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins.
Jeff Van Gundy was among the finalists for the job.
Thibodeau, 58, had clashes with Chicago management in his successful five-year run with the Bulls and embraced a Minnesota management model based upon Stan Van Gundy's setup with general manager Jeff Bower in Detroit.
Thibodeau has a strong relationship with Timberwolves legend Kevin Garnett, who has yet to announce he's playing another season with the team. Garnett has had aspirations of joining the team's ownership group upon retirement. Thibodeau and Garnett were part of Boston's 2008 NBA championship team.
Layden has previously been the general manager for the Utah Jazz and New York Knicks.

Everyone's been laughing at the Wolves but now ish just got real

I started a thread on the reported hiring of Thibs but I guess we should use this thread to discuss his hiring. He's supposedly getting a 5/yr 50M deal for becoming President of BBall Operations and HC. Great hire by MN, they disappointed this year, I thought they had enough to be about a borderline playoff team this year but they wound up in the lottery again. I think Thibs turns that team around next year and they break that playoff drought with Thibs on board. I was very impressed with how he brought Yao along when he was in Houston, I think the young guys are really going to benefit with him also.

Almost 2 months later and this thread ends with my disappointment. Damn.

Even if PJ wanted him it wasn't going to happen with the deal the TWolves gave him. So who do u like second best?

Mark Jackson is a good option. I'd take David Blatt over Rambis, but if Lebron couldn't handle Blatt, Melo won't be able to either. Luke Walton is just going to reject us.

Long story short, at this point, I'd just eat another losing season with Rambis as head coach. Get our lottery pick in the 2017 draft and then send PJ, Rambis, and the triangle offense packing.

I was thinking the same. Don't sign any max FA's and sign guys on short deals, preserve cap space, tank and get a lottery pick next draft and think about signing a guy like Westbrook next season.

Don't think PJ is going to agree, he's going to want to improve upon this season and try to make the playoffs. There's pressure from Dolan, Melo and the media not to tank and make the playoffs next season.

If Phil can't sign anyone this off season maybe Melo demands a trade and then Phil would have his excuse to tank and do this rebuild from scratch.

Scott F'n Layden! I can't even think of someone that has destroyed this franchise more systematically then Layden did..

Good luck with that, Wolves

He was hired by the best organization in the NBA and has been working with RC Buford as an asst GM. I think he's learned a few things over the years.

Yeah I think the narrative on him changed slightly and one can change if given time along with a healthy dose of humility.
