2nd rounders are easily obtained tho, with cash.

Jeff Hornacek - G - Knicks
Scott Perry has agreed to a five-year contract to become the Knicks general manager.
Perry was under contract in Sacramento. Thus, the Knicks are sending a 2019 second-round pick and cash considerations to the Kings. Perry will report to Steve Mills, who will be promoted to president of basketball operations. Per Wojnarowski's report, Mills will have final say, but Perry will be "afforded tremendous freedom" and "will be the day-to-day voice running the basketball side."

I love the title of this thread and then the eventual outcome.

Wojo is spot on, so relaying what he reported is normally a failsafe. Mills just wouldn't cede enough control and he backed out during contract negotiations after he verbally accepted offer. Like Kerr...

We've shown no evidence of this(recently) we can acquire them. Maybe this changes with Perry on board but they also are very expensive. 2017 draft Warriors paid $3.5mil for Bell(38th pick) and without a contract in place. Several yrs ago 2010, Knicks paid $1mil to Bucks for Jerome Jordan(44th pick), in 2009 paid $3mil plus a 2011 2nd for Douglas(29th pick)...INFLATION IS A MUTHA!

NY Post

?Scott is a great guy and he will be very approachable and talkative for you guys [in the media],? one NBA front-office type told The Post. ?He has great contacts around the league and is tremendous relating to players.

?The question after Orlando is his judgment in putting teams together. He?s a very nice guy, a big r?sum?, but you can argue Orlando is coming off its worst five-year stretch in their history. So you can view the move as questionable.?

According to a source, Perry, a Detroit product who spent parts of 12 years in the Pistons front office, was much behind the questionable signings of center Bismack Biyombo to a four-year, $71 million package last summer and Jeff Green. Orlando had cleared out cap space for Biyombo, shipping Tobias Harris out for Brandon Jennings, whom they let sign with the Knicks.

Perry?s drafting of Mario Hezonja at No. 5 in 2015 and Elfrid Payton in 2014 don?t look wise at the moment, especially since the latter was traded for Philadelphia?s Rookie of the Year candidate Dario Saric.

Though the selection of Victor Oladipo was sound, Orlando?s front office traded him and Domantis Sabonis to Oklahoma City for Serge Ibaka. The Magic eventually traded Ibaka for pennies on the dollar ? Terrence Ross and a late first-rounder. Perry?s Orlando staff also traded Mo Harkless to Portland for peanuts.

The good news is Perry has other successes ? already credited with good work in his Sacramento cameo. Sources say he lobbied for the Kings to draft De?Aaron Fox at No. 5, and the club had an easy free agency in adding veterans point guard George Hill, Zach Randolph and Vince Carter.

According to league executives, it is somewhat of a surprise the Kings were willing to give up Perry so soon for a 2019 second-rounder and cash. Perry pushed for the Knicks job ? feeling it was the most influence he yet has had. Plus, his daughter, Chelsea, is a film student at NYU.

In his 12 seasons with Detroit, Perry received credit for pushing for the drafting of Tayshawn Prince. He also was on the staff that passed on Carmelo Anthony in 2003 to draft Serbian bust Darko Milicic, but that was more on Joe Dumars.

The tandem of president Steve Mills and general manager Scott Perry heading the Knicks front office is expected to be kinder, gentler and friendlier.

According to sources, the duo will be a lot more available to the media. While Phil Jackson set his own media policy, which especially last season was to avoid the local press, Mills and Perry will be front and center, starting Monday at their joint press conference.

As much as Perry is hailed for his congenial, charismatic nature and slew of contacts, ranging from AAU and college coaches to international, he probably won?t want to talk too much about his five-year stint in Orlando.

Perry, 53, too, was second man in Orlando, under Rob Hennigan, and the duo got fired April 13. Two weeks later, Perry signed on with Sacramento to help inexperienced GM Vlade Divac and received kudos for the Kings? successful offseason.

But what happened to Perry in Fantasyland?

Perry and Vlade DivacAP
Sources say in due time, Perry will be allowed to hire new personnel men if he sees fit, though he is well versed in the current Knicks staff.

?This is a great opportunity for Scott professionally,? Divac said, ?and it gets him back East, closer to his daughter. I was not going to stop him. The only thing I feel bad about is that we had everything in place in our front office. Now I have to find someone who can come in and do the things Scott did for us.?

In fact, Detroit?s botch was so significant Dumars restricted his information gathering on draft prospects with Perry assigned the task. Perry is regarded as so ?thorough,? one source said, he borders on ?micromanaging.?

?That changed how we did our background checks,? Dumars said recently. ?And Scott was a huge part of the overhaul. We felt we didn?t have enough information.?

Michael Smith and Jamele Hill interviewed Scott Perry moments ago on THE 6 and asked him a very simple question that was answered very awkwardly

Question: "So what are your first impressions after meeting James Dolan"

Answer: "Well I've only dealt with Steve during this whole process and hiring"

Question: "So you haven't met him since the interviewing or you mean you've yet to meet him period"

Answer: "Correct I haven't met him but Steve and I remain in very close contact"

Scott became very uncomfortable providing clarification, it wasn't answered smoothly at all

I was wondering why after 17 years he never got a shot at a GM position, seems like a nice guy but not very eloquent or charismatic. Fans are more interested in results and winning teams but personality and magnetism help in high profile positions like a GM in NY, the lack of charisma is probably the reason he's been a second fiddle for all these years.

Wonder what happens with Allan Houston, if they don't kick him upstairs I would think that's a comment on how little they think of him.

It was initially reported that Robinson would be the GM of the Westchester Knicks but later reported that Houston would remain as the GM. Knicks are bringing in new people to do the jobs of the old people but not letting go of the old people. Makes no sense, someone better be leaving, I would have liked seeing a complete house cleaning when they fired Phil including firing Mills.

3 more guys Perry is bringing in to the front office. Knicks probably have the largest front office in the league is my bet.

New GM Scott Perry has his put his prints on the Knicks front office.

Along with the previously reported hirings of assistant GM Gerald Madkins and player development head Craig Robinson, the Knicks announced Tuesday three new executives with close ties to Perry: Harold Ellis as the director of player personnel, Michael Arcieri as the director of basketball strategy and Fred Cofield as a scout.

Ellis and Arcieri were with the Knicks GM during his stint in Orlando. Cofield grew up in Michigan at the same time as Perry before they were teammates at the University of Oregon. Cofield, who has been working as an independent scout and personal trainer to multiple NBA players, played one season with the Knicks after being in 1985.

It?s unclear if the Knicks will gouge a front office that has largely been in place for a while. ESPN reported that Allan Houston and Clarence Gaines will remain with the organization (although Gaines will likely have a reduced role). Mark Warkentien, who was hired by the Knicks from the Nuggets just before the trade for Carmelo Anthony, has been the director of player personnel, a title that now belongs to Ellis.

?Last month, the day after I was hired, I started a full evaluation of the entire basketball operations staff,? Perry said in a statement. ?My first goal was to build-up the highest level front office in the NBA. We are adding a host of highly-regarded and respected basketball people to work with the Knicks to fortify the franchise for years to come.?

With five new additions, there will, at most, be one current front-office member on thin ice, as a source told The Post Phil Jackson?s top advisor, Clarence Gaines Jr., will stay on.

The Knicks had a handful of openings that were never filled ? with the death this season of scout Ben Jobe, the retirement of personnel director John Gabriel because of Parkinson?s disease, the departure of executive Chris Bernard and firing of developmental coach Josh Longstaff.

However, the future of Mark Warkentien, who was brought on by Donnie Walsh, is unclear. Warkentien held the title of personnel director that now belongs to Ellis.

The narrative that former Cleveland GM David Griffin wasn?t going to be allowed to bring in his own people seems far-fetched now. Sources indicate Griffin never seriously considered the job once he learned he would have to report to Mills.

Mills and Perry represent the only African-American managerial tandem in the NBA and the club added more diversity Tuesday with four African-Americans among the hirings. Perry?s father, Lowell, is credited as the NFL?s first black assistant coach.

Madkins returns to the Knicks after being hired as a scout by Scott Layden in 2003. He joined the Clippers in 2007.

Robinson appears to be the main Mills hire. The former Bucks executive and college coach played alongside Mills at Princeton and was a two-time Ivy League Player of the Year.

Cofield was a fourth-round draft pick of the Knicks in 1985. He spent his rookie season with the team before heading to Chicago. He has ties to Jackson after he played in the old CBA for Charley Rosen, Jackson?s friend and one-time assistant.
