The Knicks didn?t want lightning-quick Westchester Knicks point guard Trey Burke to head to Wednesday?s G-League Showcase, a four-day event in Mississauga, Ontario, where all of the league?s talent will be on display.
They didn?t want Burke to have a chance to show what the Knicks already know: He?s ready for an NBA roster.
Burke, the G-League Player of the Month for December, is working on a deal to join the Knicks, who will have to make room on their 15-man roster, according to an NBA source.
The Knicks are expected to waive point guard Ramon Sessions, who lost his starting job after the season?s third game, if they can?t find a trade for the veteran. Yahoo first reported the Burke negotiations.
Burke attended the final week of Knicks training camp, but didn?t have enough time to get into a game. Jarrett Jack became the starter, with top-pick Frank Ntilikina as a trusty backup. But the Knicks are looking for another penetrating point guard, and Sessions didn?t excel when he had an opportunity.
Burke, a former Jazz lottery pick, is only 25. With Westchester he is averaging 26.6 points, 5.4 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.9 steals, but scouts say his defense isn?t up to snuff. At 6-foot-1, he?s also a small point guard ? which could give the Knicks matchup problems.
Burke was a teammate of Tim Hardaway Jr. at Michigan, and they are friends. Burke averaged 10.6 points and 3.6 assists in 267 career games for Utah and Washington from 2013 to 2017. He was the ninth pick of the 2013 draft and an NBA all-rookie selection. Last season, Burke played in 57 games for the Wizards.
Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek was impressed during training camp with how Burke picked up the schemes right away, but, at the time, the Knicks were committed to Sessions, Jack and Ntilikina.
?He?s a guy who can penetrate and create things that way,? Hornacek said in October. ?He can set up the offense and break guys down. He?s a good shooter when he gets a good look. And he?s been around the league. He can play.?
