LOS ANGELES ? Tim Hardaway Jr. left the Staples Center court Sunday, muttering in anger. Afterward, he put his words on the record, saying, damningly, the Lakers ?wanted it more.??
Hardaway had a right to be fuming as one day after he said the Knicks should be zeroing in on a playoff berth, they looked far from it in a disgraceful defensive outing.
The depleted, rebuilding Lakers feasted on the Knicks in a home matinee, routing them 127-107. The Lakers? young prospects dominated with Jordan Clarkson notching 29 points and Julius Randle roaring for 25 points and 12 rebounds as they ran the Knicks out of downtown L.A. with 56 percent shooting.
Hardaway kept harping on the subject in the locker room after the Knicks played groggy for a 12:30 p.m. West Coast tipoff.
?It is very frustrating,?? said Hardaway, who finished with 17 points after he was the hero of the Utah win Friday. ?What?d you see out there? That could be part of it [the early start]. They wanted it more. We can?t let that happen. It shouldn?t be happening. Both teams should be competing at an equal pace.?
Several Knicks cited the Lakers, despite their 17-29 record, having the fastest attack in the NBA. However, they were without their speedy point guard, Lonzo Ball (knee soreness), and starting small forward, Kentavius Caldwell-Pope.
?We were going against a team that leads the league in pace and wants to get up and down,?? Hardaway added. ?We got to be ready for it. We were not ready for it today.?
Even going as far as giving Lakers coach Luke Walton a plug, Hardaway praised their effort.
?We didn?t get enough stops today,?? Hardaway said. ?We really didn?t get any stops. That team is so well-energized, well-coached. They do a great job of crashing the glass, going hard on every possession, diving on the floor. You could tell they want it.??
This wasn?t a good afternoon for Kristaps Porzingis, who scored 17 points but was invisible as an interior defender and grabbed just five rebounds to go with one block. The Lakers scored 60 points in the paint and were physical with Porzingis.
?We agreed we didn?t do a good job of slowing it down ourselves and falling into their game,?? Porzingis said. ?They?re really good [at pushing the pace] and we played too loose.??
?They just played harder than us in everything,?? said Enes Kanter. ?They out-hustled us and got easy baskets. We can?t play like this in road games and expect to get a win. We didn?t play hard enough. We can?t go out here and say, ?Hey, let?s get a win.? ?
While his team fell to 6-17 away from the Garden. Jeff Hornacek looked exasperated all game, especially in the fourth quarter, when the Lakers outscored the Knicks 30-18. A fed-up Hornacek called timeout after Brandon Ingram shot an airball and Julius Randle caught it underneath and stuffed it on Porzingis.
?Randle and Clarkson, they were killing us,? he added. ?We tried multiple guys on them, but they took to whoever was guarding them.?
