Game Preview

NEW YORK -- The David Fizdale era kicks off for the New York Knicks on Wednesday night as they open their season with a visit from the Atlanta Hawks at 7:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden.

Of course, with the Knicks there is always drama, and that is no different as they set to open their season.

First, there was the jettisoning of longtime NBA vet Joakim Noah over the weekend.

Then, on Monday, the team declined to sign star forward Kristaps Porzingis to a rookie extension prior to the deadline. He remains sidelined as he rehabs a torn ACL, leaving his contract negotiations to the summer.

And on Tuesday, even more cacophony, as reporters learned that promising rookie forward Kevin Knox would not be in the starting lineup on Wednesday as projected. The Knicks will instead go with second-year defensive lockdown specialist Frank Ntilikina.

So much for an uneventful start to the season.

Knox, the No. 7 pick in the draft out of Kentucky, had started all five preseason games for New York, but struggled in the final three. He shot just 32 percent during preseason action, but Fizdale insisted as late as Friday that he would be in the starting lineup.

Instead, Trey Burke will start at the point, Ntilikina at the two and Tim Hardaway Jr. at small forward.

"Coach wants me to be more aggressive with that second lineup," Knox said, "and be a leader with that second lineup and go from there. I'm not surprised at all. He wants to switch up lineups, and we have so much talent on this team."

Added Ntilikina: "I'm really, really happy to be a starter, but it's not the end of the day. What we want to be is successful with this team. Coach has that confidence in me and Trey, and we'll do the best we can do in those few minutes and try to be more competitive."

Fizdale did not mince words with reporters on Tuesday, saying that Knox was "playing pretty crappy, so his confidence was already shook up. So sometimes a little tweak, just taking him out of the lineup for a minute might give him a chance to digest it, take a breath."

Atlanta's first-round pick, meanwhile, is having no such early season uncertainty.

Trae Young, the No. 5 pick in the draft out of Oklahoma after a sensational freshman year, is the Hawks' starting point guard and figures to be an integral part of the offense.

"I've always dreamed of playing in Madison Square," Young told the New York Daily News. "I was able to play in the Staples Center when I was in college, but I've never been able to be in Madison Square. I'm looking forward to playing in it. I know it's going to be a crazy environment. They said that sometimes during timeouts there are light shows. They said it's crazy. I'm looking forward to it."

The Hawks also hope to get some added scoring punch from third-year small forward Taurean Prince, the No. 12 pick in the 2016 draft by Utah. Prince averaged 14.1 points per game last year, up from 5.7 as a rookie.

The Knicks' best scorer, Porzingis, is expected to be out until at least December, but he has impressed his new coach with his basketball IQ.

"He's been awesome to have in the gym," Fizdale told reporters Monday. "It's like having another coach. The film sessions, he speaks up as much as any coach on our staff, and what he says is exactly what we need said."

Thanks Rady for the game thread. Posted this in the pre-season thread but I didn't really research who the probable starters for the Hawks would be, just going by what I saw of them in the pre-season. Fiz hasn't made up his mind about the starting PG but I would go with Nits after seeing his former PG Conley shut down Trae. I'm sure Fiz will see tape of that pre-season game.

This is the lineup I think the Hawks go with opening night. That lineup may not be a playoff team in the EC but I think will beat the boys opening night.

Wsup Rady & Tiger .. Thanks for the Game Thread ....
The NBA got the Knicks playing the (25 win season) Hawks on opening night, I wonder why?
The Hawks offseason graded very low from their two trades .. Schroder & Doncic .. Wow! The Hawks could have started the season having two ball-moving scorers (Schroder & Doncic) that would have meshed well in their first season together having two bigs in their lineup Collins & Dedman or Len to become scary opponent this season.
Schroder .. makes OKC a 2nd round playoff team again!
Doncic .. will double the Mavs fans base!

Frank vs Trae = Frank
Timmy vs Bazemore = even
Knox vs Prince = Prince
Lance vs Collins = Collins
Kanter vs Len = Kanter
Knicks win 97 - 93

Does this infer a Burke, THjr, LT, Mario, Kanter starting 5?

This infers Knits is not a "Point Guard" and that the only reason he's starting is to check Young which is kind of odd in a way...especially since we're tipping our hands on strategy out the gate. Another example of probably should've kept our mouths shut "AGAIN".

I also think this is Fizdale's way of keeping some of the heat off of himself with the fan base, while also not alienating his locker room based on what he's said in DA MEDIA! Knox really didn't EARN his way to start if we're being truthful

I wonder if this means Burke, Timmy, Knits, LT, Kanter? Or does Timmy sit for Mario? Will Lee ever get traded?

Not only is Ntilikina not a PG, apparently he is not a SG either. Fizdale is using him as our starting SF. Mudiay is out for the opener. Who is running the point then for our 2nd unit? Baker?

Fiz is going too far with this positionless bball. Fiz said he would start Knox after the last game but he changed his mind telling me Nits killed Knox in practice and Knox struggled.Trey vs. Trae is the natural matchup, putting Trey on anyone else would be a matchup the Hawks would try to exploit.

Nits will be matched up against their wings and maybe occasionally against Young. This is a pretty small team Fiz is putting out there, contradicting what he said about not liking Lee and THJ together because of their size.

Another thing to keep in mind is that I?m not entirely sure Fizdale was told winning any games is even an objective this season. We project to be the worst team in the NBA this season. Starting Ntilikina at SF may be part of some larger player development plan. Letting Knox run amok with the 2nd unit and not have to compete with THJ, Burke, and Kanter for shots sort of makes sense to start the year. Won?t know for sure until we are at least a month or so into the season.

Any day Mudiay doesn't see the floor is a good day. Fiz giving a look at Nits as a SF, maybe he gives Trier a look at PG.

As Mafra mentioned Collins is out with an ankle injury, 41 yr old Vince Carter will replace him.

I wonder if Fiz will unleash a second unit of the rookies, Knox-Trier-Mitchell with Super Mario with whatever spare part of the moment?

Knicks will be playing a soft zone at times where you see Nits cover Trae at times but his assignment will be the wings primarily. Here's a steal by Nits off Trae from Summer League.

Broadway mentioned the 2 most exciting guys in this draft being traded for each other. Both great passers, Doncic my candidate for ROY but Trae with the unlimited range, he nailed the game winning 3 against the Spurs in the pre-season from at least 35 ft. It wasn't even a desperation heave, he just knew that shot was in his range.

That's BS that you can't stop a 41 yr old VC from driving to the hoop when he starts from the 3pt line.VC is slow as a turtle now.
