Trier, an undrafted rookie for the Knicks, has quickly become a fan favorite. Before that, he was a prodigy on a winding journey through elite youth basketball.

He was a sixth-grader from Seattle, a 13-year-old elite basketball prospect with arms that seemed endless. He stared straight into the camera for a photo shoot as his uniform shorts drooped toward his calves. Just 5-foot-5 and 110 pounds, he stood tall, self-assured.

So what became of the boy who patterned his daily drills off the childhood workouts of Pete Maravich? Whose routine included making 500 baskets a day? Who crisscrossed the country, courted by A.A.U. teams, all-star tournaments, shoe companies, high school and college coaches? Is he still in the game?
