Game Preview

There are many ways to measure how badly the New York Knicks have struggled this century. A new metric will be introduced Monday, when the Knicks look to win a rare Martin Luther King Day Jr. road game when they visit the Cleveland Cavaliers in a battle of Eastern Conference also-rans.

Both teams extended their latest losing streaks in agonizing fashion Saturday night, when the host Knicks were edged by the Philadelphia 76ers 90-87, and the visiting Cavaliers fell to the Chicago Bulls 118-116.

The results kept Cleveland (12-31) and New York (11-32) in 13th and 14th place in the 15-team Eastern Conference, and 27th and 28th overall, respectively, in the 30-team NBA.

The loss Saturday was the third straight for the Knicks, who appeared on the verge of upsetting the 76ers when Marcus Morris' jumper with under 35 seconds left gave New York its first lead since the first quarter.

But the 76ers' Tobias Harris drained a 3-pointer on the next trip down the floor and the Knicks didn't get a shot off during their subsequent possession.

"This was a tough one to swallow, because for the last couple seconds, we thought we got control of it," Morris said. "We played our (rear ends) off."

The Knicks are 7-14 under interim head coach Mike Miller, including 1-8 since Jan. 3, a span in which they have absorbed four losses by more than 20 points. Such results are familiar to the Cavaliers, who are 2-8 with four double-digit losses this month under embattled first-year head coach John Beilein.

The Cavaliers also have three one-possession losses in the new year, but none was as frustrating as the defeat they suffered Saturday, when Cleveland a season-high 73 points in the first half and entered the fourth quarter with a 15-point lead before committing 10 turnovers and missing 11 of 15 shots from the field over the final 12 minutes.

"That one really hits hard -- really disappointed in that because we played so well," Beilein said after the Cavaliers fell to 2-4 since he said the team was playing "like a bunch of thugs" when he said he meant to say "slugs" during a film session.

"The 26 turnovers (overall), you just ... (it) still plagues us. We've got to keep working at it, keep working at it, and just get our guys better in those areas."

The Knicks are expected to be without rookie RJ Barrett, who was sidelined Saturday and is likely amid a multi-game absence due to a sprained ankle.

The road game will be just the second on Martin Luther King Jr. Day since 1987 for the Knicks, who traditionally host a matinee on the holiday.

New York, which has reached the conference semifinals just once since the 1999-2000 season and is well on its way to its 16th losing season of the century, didn't host a game at Madison Square Garden on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2018 because the arena was preparing to host the Grammy Awards.

I see KO.com apathy is at an all-time high. Game tied 45-45 just before the half update 50-49 Cavs. Free NBA League Pass this week!!!

Frank, Dot, and Portis can?t run a fastbreak but they sure can execute an inbounds play. Poetry to end the third.
Strong Q for NYK and Dotson.

We up 15 in CLE as we head to the 4th.

Glad to see Knicks playing well. Need to string a few wins together to get me thinking this team has anything going for it though.

Is this one of those games we will wish we lost due to draft position?

New format changes thinking, and there isn?t a stud to tank for anyway. We need wins, so the team can carry winning momentum into the offseason.

Again, my goal is to avoid 50 losses!

Dotson had a great 2-Way performance game scoring 12 pts on 5-7 fg shooting, 5 rbs, 1 ast, 1 stl in 20 minute.
Next game Dotson will be put back into Mills/Perry trade-bait Dog-house SMH

Im still looking for a frontcourt lineup of MitchRob, Gibson, and Knox VS Portis, Randle, and Morris lineup ???

The guys aren't giving up with all of them thinking they're better than the record. Probably the the most important 10 game stretch starting with that Sixers game, they have to go 5-5 to become a .300 ball club which would be the first time they haven't been a bottom feeding .200 team. That would be progress that might make Mills try to keep this group together esp if no one is offering a first for any of them.

Beating the Cavs senseless means nothing though. Lakers and Raps up next, pulling one of those games out will be more meaningful.

I'm curious .. when Zion return will coach Gentry put him in the starter lineup ???
Wednesday against the Spurs is when he's supposed to make his debut. Pels are playing well lately so they should be even better with him in the lineup. Lonzo and him are going to be fun to watch.

Beating CLE means nada (is correct), especially when Trier doesn?t play and Frank-MRob-Knox combined made 3 shots (total). 13-14-3 was their combined line.

Dotson was solid. The vets were solid...

But this win does what for our future?

1 play Aline made it worth the watch... EP to Randle for the layup in the 4th was sweet. And Frank locked down Sexton in second half.

? Miller started the same starting five as Saturday, going with the five 2019 free agents in Morris, Randle, Elfrid Payton, Reggie Bullock, and Taj Gibson. Four of the five reached double figures. It was the team?s second straight game without RJ Barrett.

With the trade deadline approaching and many teams scouting and inquiring about the Knicks in recent weeks, the club clearly has a showcase mentality for the veterans rather than overplaying their young players. There?ll be plenty of time for that in February, March and April.?

I hope all the Knick players keep the attitude a believing they are better than the trick record 12-32 .. a less than .300 team, being the 3rd worst NBA team.
This dont look good for the interim coach Miller, unless he could make a drastic win-win change in the midseason where a lot of Knicks opponents will be playing tougher for their play-off race.
I too .. are not looking forward to Mills/Perry trading any players before the dead-line (They did enough damage), plus the type of players the Knicks need are not available to them in a trade. And no, i dont want any first round picks for Trier, Dotson, Knox, or Frank.
The Knicks guards need to co-exist on their ball-movement, and Miller need to fix the front-court players, especially shoot-first Randle and shoot-first Portis, their individual performance are killing the team having very poor skills in Team-Ball !!!

Coach Miller have to win every game vs the non-playoff teams during mid-season to get points from me at the end of the season .. Miller having Randle, Morris, and RJ Barrett as the first 3 offensive-option throughout the game without any design plays given to their steady isolation performance has not looked good in our last (2-8) 10 games.

The only Knick veteran players a playoff team would want from us are Morris & Gibson .. that's me.
