Howard Eisley could miss the rest of preseason because of his hamstring strain, giving Don Chaney no choice but give the backup point guard job to Frank Williams.

Eisley missed his fourth straight preseason game Friday in San Antonio and Chaney said he could miss the final two. Williams, the Knicks' first-round pick last year, was giving Eisley a run for his money before the injury.

Williams has dramatically improved his outside shot but still doesn't see the floor as well as Chaney would like. But he just may earn the backup point-guard job by default. Earlier this week, Chaney said he planned to restore Charlie Ward as the starter. Eisley, 3-for-20 in preseason, started last year.

"You have to be very careful with hamstrings," Chaney said. "Any time you [strain] a hamstring, you're gong to be out for a while. That ended my career. You just don't bounce back from those. You have to wait until it heals."

Knicks will hold an open practice today at noon at the Garden. Fans looking for the few remaining complimentary tickets are advised to show up between 9:30 and 10 a.m. There will be an autograph session and the world's largest layup line. Knicks called Guinness to see if it was interested in covering the event and were told it may add the layup-line category next year.

Rookie Mike Sweetney has lost the backup-power-forward job to Clarence Weatherspoon. That is, until Antonio McDyess returns by November. As Chaney pares his rotation, Sweetney was a DNP Friday.
