Since he's been starting, he's been playing well. He had 22 points and 11 rebounds and led his team in +/- tonight against the Clippers. The other night he had 14 points and 14 rebounds against the Thunder. Would have been good in this system...

I'm talking about Renaldo Balkman btw. In case you didn't know his nickname.

Hello all, I'm a 'newbie'...he would have gave us that energy we lack when nate is starting...I'm happy to see his production going up with the minutes.

Why doesn't Renaldo Balkman get more minutes?
More people have asked your friendly neighborhood columnist the above question than any other this season. In turn, I've asked George Karl the question multiple times throughout the season. Each time Karl's response has basically centered around Balkman being an insurance policy.
To some extent this makes sense given most coaches only like to go eight or nine players deep. With the injuries the Nuggets have experienced of late, though, Balkman has seen increased playing time. And as his minutes have increased, so has his production.
The question that remains is whether or not he will continue to see minutes once everyone is healthy again in Denver. Considering the team is 6-1 when Balkman starts, one would have to believe Karl will find a way to keep him a part of the rotation, right?
"There are choices on this team," Karl told HOOPSWORLD. "I don't think you can play everybody. If you have 20 to 25 minutes I would rather give one guy 25 minutes. So I think there are choices. When Kenyon's healthy there will be a choice to play Renaldo or Linas, and that's a choice that will have to be made in certain situations and circumstances. I'm happy for (Balkman). I think he's persevered through a difficult season. I told him a long time ago that you'll never know when you'll be playing, but be ready to play. I think he has done that very, very well."
Certainly Balkman doesn't have a very refined offensive game, and that's part of the reason Kleiza has been seeing the lion's share of the minutes off the bench. However, since the All-Star break Kleiza has been largely M.I.A.
Balkman, on the other hand, has been nothing short of fantastic. Over the course of his last three games he has grabbed 38 rebounds and scored 32 points. Perhaps most impressive, he's put up those numbers without having a single play run for him.
"It was great for him to fill in that spot for K-Mart," said Carmelo Anthony. "Coming in and grabbing boards and just hustling, I think that really got us going."
Opponents of the Nuggets have taken notice of what Balkman brings to the table, too.
"Those type of guys you don't judge by their stats," explained Oklahoma City head coach Scott Brooks. "He is an energy guy and has been terrific for them."
"He is a guy that fills the role of (Eduardo) Najera from last year," added former Nugget and current Thunder guard Earl Watson.
Even as well as Balkman has played, though, there's no guarantee he will get consistent minutes moving forward.
When asked about being ready to take advantage of his minutes, Balkman said: "You have to be. If I don't, you won't see me. When (Karl) calls my name I just have to be ready. He called my name (Wednesday morning) at shoot-around and I had to be ready."
For people who don't get to see Balkman behind the scenes, understand he's been professional all season long. There has been no moping or pouting in the locker room despite his inconsistent minutes. So whether he gets minutes or not, expect Balkman to continue to play the role of good soldier.
That said, with the Nuggets in the middle of a heated race for Northwest Division supremacy Karl can no longer afford to give Kleiza minutes hoping he'll come around. The Nuggets are in a place where every game matters, and if Balkman gives the team the best chance to win and it requires Kleiza to have a seat then that's what needs to be done.
Anything less could cost the Nuggets a division title and home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

ive been saying this since we first traded him

thought it was a bad move then and its looking evem more so everytime he
gets the chance to play and produces like this.

hes a better shot blocker, rebounder then jeffries and he runs the floor well and can finish around the rim even though he lacks any offensive game. well so does jeffries, hes not much better on offense at all lol

reallly wish we wouldve kept him

i believe the only reason he was traded was because we desperately wanted to move jeffries and play him and hope we could find a suitor. but i knew anyone with sense knew that his play was not gonna justify his contract and interest anyone in signing him

I miss Treovor Ariza, when we drafted i him I saw the future in him. I was right but I was wrong. He have been great for The Lakers.

When the Billups trade to Denver was made I thought.....Billups, Prince, and Big-Ben....their DEFENSE made a Championship Team in Detroit....so you know I was thinking Billups, Balkman, and K-Mart, Trio-DEFENSE in Denver will be a stalemate to the Western Conference best Defensive Team the Spurs. Watchout Lakers!
But coach Karl still have to much LUV for Klenza, Smith, and Nene getting above 28 mpg this season....even when Carmelo was out with injuries. It took a two week injury to K-Mart for coach Karl to recognize Balkman overall B-Ball high IQ in passing, picking, put-backs, rebounds, and hustle-scoring.

I know lee & Nate sure miss Balkman's Tazman hustle performance....Duhon would've LUV to add the Tazman to his give and go for more assist per game, and Chandler miss Balkman's picking his man off down low or up high to give him that first step to slash or go for his jump shot.

Balkman stat numbers dont compare close to the "hustle-performance" he give in the paint or on the open court.....Denvers (no playoff strategy) coach George Karl is learning that Balkman brings all kind of energy to his teammates while on the court.

Its nice to see Renaldo Balkman and Trevor Ariza starting for playoff teams.

Having balkman, hughes and chandler would of solidified our defense against most of the top scorers in the league (wade, lebron, kobe, etc.)

Doo Doo
Hughes
Ariza
Balkman
Thomas

could of been our defensive specialist line up.

No it could not have been. Hughes was traded for Tim Thomas.

Edit: Also, it could not have been because:

Ariza was traded in part for Steve Francis
Steve Francis was traded in part for Zach Randolph
Randolph was traded for Tim Thomas
Tim Thomas was traded for Hughes.

So Ariza and Hughes could not and would not have played together.

i believe he's talkin about kurt thomas not tim thomas

If he's talking about Kurt Thomas and not Tim Thomas, that's even more ridiculous. KT hasn't been on the Knicks since 2004-05, and has been on 3 teams since...

Shit if he's gonna say KURT Thomas, why not suggest Marcus Camby?

Also, if the Knicks never trade Kurt Thomas, they never get the pick that becomes Nate Robinson. So there's that.

Well it looks like Balkman will probably be out for a while b/c he just pulled/strained his groin going for a rebound.

The point still remains the same there was no reason to trade Balkman this offseason other than personal reasons. Especially for Anthony Roberson!
SF-Q.Richardson performance in the 2007-8 season were so clueless to helping the team that it automatically put Balkman in the starting lineup for the 2008-9 season with Wilson Chandler as his backup. Fukkk the European rookie playingtime this season he is 19 and have alot to learn from garbage minutes.

There was no reason to trade for Norris, Marbury, Penny, Tim Thomas, Crawful, Mo Taylor, Malik, Q.Richardson, Davis, Jalen, Francis, and Zach. These players averaged $10M per season and did nothing to help this team WIN.
And the MLE signing of Baker and both J.J.'s was the icing on the cake.
It does not matter if we got draft picks Nate & Lee in the trades for an expensive cancer-player that did more damage to the team.

Thanks for another useless post.
